"Quran, Hadith, Recitation Available on PC CD-ROM", January 1997, by Murad Kalam.
A great wealth of Islamic information is now available at a keystroke thanks to publishers of a new CD-ROM entitled The Alim. Muslims owning a PC computer with a CD-ROM drive can now search the Quran and hadith by word and subject, compare various translations of the Quran, and even hear an Arabic recitation by a world-renowned qari.
The Alim is but one of many educational Islamic titles available on CD-ROM, and it is probably the mostt versatile, permitting learned Muslims to receive information quickly, and new Muslims the abiltiy to learn the fundamentals of Islamic subjects and proper recitation. In both areas The Alim is a well organized and user friendly program. As the qari recites, for instance, Alim identifies both the sura and ayat, and displays Arabic Quran, so that one can learn perfect pronunciation and Arabic at once. It is especially handy in this regard for those Muslims with a cursory understanding of Arabic.
An Imam could search the Quran for all of the suras in which the word “purity” appears—or indeed for all of the suras in which the word “purity” appears near the word “woman.” In all of these respects, it seems the creators of The Alim have thought of everything. Learned Muslims know that the Quran suffers under translation, and so The Alim offers several translations placed side by side on the screen. One is also permited to leave bookmarks at a particular article or even print out English articles or parts of the Arabic Quran, or hadith for khut’ub. Also included are Quranic commentaries, a transliteration (the phonetical pronunciation) of the Quran, Islamic images, histories of the Companions, and a great deal more.
