[And then he marched eastwards] till, when he came to the rising of the sun,91 he found that it was rising on a people for whom We had provided no coverings against it:
  - Mohammad Asad

I.e., the easternmost point of his expedition (similar to the expression "the setting of the sun" in verse {86}).

till he came to the rising of the Sun, he noted it rising on a people for whom We had not provided any shelter from it (they were so backward that they did not even know how to make houses or tents for their living).
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
until he reached the rising 'point' of the sun. He found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no shelter from it.1
  - Mustafa Khattab

They either had no clothes or homes to protect them from the sun.

Till, when he reached the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had appointed no helper therefrom.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Until when he came to the rising of the sun he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun. 2434 2435
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

We now come to the second episode. This is an expedition to the east. "Rising of the sun" has a meaning corresponding to "setting of the sun" in xviii. 86, as explained in n. 2430.

The people here lived very simple lives. Perhaps the climate was hot, and they required neither roofs over their heads, nor much clothing to protect them from the sun. What did he do with them? See next note.
