Surah 2. Al-Baqara, Ayah 286
| لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ ۗ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا ۚ رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ ۖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ أَنْتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ |
| Transliteration | : | laa yukallif 'allaah nafs(an) 'illaa wusc -haa la- -haa maa kasabat wa- calay -haa maa iktasabat rabb -naa laa tu'aakhidh -naa 'in nasenaa 'aw akht.a'naa rabb -naa wa- laa tah.mil calay -naa 'is.r(an) ka-maa h.amalta -hu calaa 'alladhena min qabli -naa rabb -naa wa- laa tuh.ammil -naa maa laa t.aaqah la- -naa bi- -hi wa- ucfu can -naa wa- ighfir la- -naa wa- irh.am -naa 'anta mawlaa -naa fa- uns.ur -naa calaa al- qawm al- kaafiren |
| Pickthall | : | Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk. |
| Asad | : | "God does not burden any human being with more than he is well able to bear: in his favour shall be whatever good he does, and against him whatever evil he does. "O our Sustainer! Take us not to task if we forget or unwittingly do wrong! "O our Sustainer! Lay not upon us a burden such as Thou didst lay upon those who lived before us!278 O our Sustainer! Make us not bear burdens which we have no strength to bear! "And efface Thou our sins, and grant us forgiveness, and bestow Thy mercy upon us! Thou art our Lord Supreme: succour us, then, against people who deny the truth!" |
| Malik | : | Allah does not burden any human being with more than he can bear. Everyone will enjoy the credit of his deeds and suffer the debits of his evil-doings. The believers say: "Our Rabb! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Rabb! Do not place on us a burden as You placed on those before us. Our Rabb! Lay not on us the kind of burden that we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, Forgive us, Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, help us against the unbelievers." |
| Yusuf Ali | : | On no soul doth Allah place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray): "Our Lord! condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; help us against those who stand against faith." 340 341 342 |
Note - 278A reference to the heavy burden of rituals imposed by the
Law of Moses upon the children of Israel, as well as the
world-renunciation recommended by Jesus to his followers.

Note - 340Cf. ii. 233. In that verse the burden was in terms of
material wealth: here it is in terms of spiritual duty.
Assured by God that He will accept from each soul just
such duty as it has the ability to offer, we pray further
on for the fulfilment of that promise.

Note - 341We must not be arrogant, and think that because God has
granted us His favor and mercy we have no need to exert
ourselves, or that we are ourselves superior to those
before us. On the contrary, knowing how much they
failed, we pray that our burdens should be lightened, and
we confess our realization that we have all the greater
need for God's mercy and forgiveness. And so we end the
whole argument of the Sura with a prayer for God's help,
not in our own selfish ends, but in our resolve to uphold
God's truth against all Unbelief.
