إِن تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ ۖ وَإِن تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
In tuAAa thth ibhum fainnahum AAib a duka wain taghfir lahum fainnaka anta alAAazeezu al h akeem u
If thou cause them to suffer - verily, they are Thy servants; and if Thou forgive them - verily, Thou alone art almighty, truly wise!"

If You punish them, they surely are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You are Mighty, Wise."

If You punish them, they belong to You after all.1 But if You forgive them, You are surely the Almighty, All-Wise.'

 i.e., as your creation, they cannot escape the punishment.

If Thou punish them, lo! they are Thy slaves, and if Thou forgive them (lo! they are Thy slaves). Lo! Thou, only Thou art the Mighty, the Wise.

A Master can justly punish His servants for disobedience: no one can say Him nay, for He is high above all. But if He chooses to forgive. He in His wisdom sees things that we mortals cannot see. This is the limit of intercession that men of God can make on behalf of sinners.
