Surah 5. Al-Maida, Ayah 34



إِلَّا الَّذِينَ تَابُوا مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ تَقْدِرُوا عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ


Transliteration : fa- bacatha 'allaah ghuraab(an) yabh.ath fe al- 'ard. li- yuriya -hu kayfa yuwaare saw'ah 'akhe -hi qaala yaa waylah -aa 'a- cajaztu 'an akon mithl haadhaa al- ghuraab fa- uwaariya saw'ah 'akh -e fa- as.bah.a min an- naadimen
Pickthall : Save those who repent before ye overpower them. For know that Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Asad : save for such [of them] as repent ere you [O believers] become more powerful than they:46 for you must know that God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.
Malik : except those who repent before you apprehend them, in such a case, you should know that Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Yusuf Ali : Except for those who repent before they fall into your power: in that case know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

Asad 46 I.e. before belief in God and in the ethical principles decreed by Him becomes prevalent: for, in that event, repentance on the part of "those who make war on God and His apostle" would be no more than an act of conforming to the dominant trend and, therefore, of no moral value whatever. It is to be noted that the exemption from suffering relates to the hereafter.
