وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ


Asad : And do not through giving seek thyself to gain,3
Khattab :

Do not do a favour expecting more ˹in return˺.1

Malik : do not favor others to expect a gain,
Pickthall : And show not favor, seeking worldly gain!
Yusuf Ali : Nor expect in giving any increase (for thyself)! 5781
Transliteration : Wala tamnun tastakthiru

Yusuf Ali 5781 The legal and commercial formula is that you give in order to receive. And usually you expect to receive what is worth to you a little more than you give. The spiritual consideration is that you give, but expect nothing from the receiver. You serve Allah and Allah's creatures.

 It was a common practice to give someone a gift, hoping to receive a more valuable gift in return. This practice is disliked in Islam.
