The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) led us in the morningprayer in Mecca and began Surat al-Mu'minun (23) but when he cameto the mention of Moses and Aaron (verse 45) or to the mention ofJesus (verse 50) a cough got the better of him, and he bowed.Abdullah ibn Sa'ib was present there, and in the hadith narratedby AbdurRazzaq (the words are): He cut short (the recitation) andbowed.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sat talking (to thepeople), he would often raise his eyes to the sky.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Even if one has other garments he need wear nothing on Friday but the two garments he wears every day!"
Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Malik transmitted it from Yahya ibn Sa'id.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to Madinah and I went and examined his face, I recognized that it was not the face of a liar. The first thing he said was, "If you people greet all whom you meet, provide food, care for the wellbeing of your kindred, and pray at night when people are asleep, you will enter Paradise in peace."

The description of Muhammad is written in the Torah and also that Jesus, son of Mary, will be buried along with him. AbuMawdud said that a place for a grave had remained in the house.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited to urinate in a hole.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A good manner of conduct, deliberation and moderation are a twenty-fourth part of prophecy."

A person entered the mosque, while the Messenger of Allah (peacebe upon him) was leading the dawn prayer. He observed two rak'ahsin a corner of the mosque, and then joined the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (peacebe upon him) had pronounced salutations (he had concluded theprayer), he said: O, so and so, which one out of these twoprayers did you count (as your Fard prayer), the one that youobserved alone or the prayer that you observed with us?
When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) set forth on ajourney, he sought refuge (with Allah) from the hardships of thetravelling, and finding of evil changes on return, and disgraceafter honour, and the curse of the oppressed and a gloomy sadscene in family and property.
I saw Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and ate with him breadand meat, or he said Tharid (bread soaked in soup). I said tohim: Did Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) seek forgiveness foryou? He said: Yes, and for you, and he then recited this verse:"Ask forgiveness for thy sin and for the believing men andbelieving women" (xivii.19) I then went after him and saw theSeal of Prophethood between his shoulders on the left side of hisshoulder having spots on it like moles.
When three members of the Banu Udhrah came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and accepted Islam, he asked who would look after them for him and Talhah said he would, so they stayed with him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent out an expedition which one of them joined, and he was martyred. Afterwards he sent out an expedition which a second man joined, and he was martyred. Later the third man died in his bed. Talhah said he had seen these three in paradise and had seen that the one who died in his bed was their leader, the one who was martyred second coming next to him and the first coming next to him. He had misgivings about that, so he mentioned the matter to the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said, "What objection have you to that? No one is more excellent in Allah's sight than a believer whose life is prolonged in Islam to glorify and magnify Allah and declare His uniqueness."

The Companions of Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) did not look upon any of (man's) deeds as infidelity with the exception of giving up prayer.

AbuMuhammad fancies that witr prayer is essential. (Hearing this)Ubadah ibn as-Samit said: AbuMuhammad was wrong. I bear witnessthat I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Allah,the Exalted, has made five prayers obligatory. If anyone performsablution for them well, offers them at their (right) time, andobserves perfectly their bowing and submissiveness in them, it isthe guarantee of Allah that He will pardon him; if anyone doesnot do so, there is no guarantee for him on the part of Allah; Hemay pardon him if He wills, and punish him if He wills.
The letter of the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) was readout to us in the territory of Juhaynah when I was a young boy: Donot make use of the skin or sinew of an animal which died anatural death.
Al-Hakam ibn Uyaynah said that he went along with some people toAbdullah ibn Ukaym, a man of Juhaynah. al-Hakam said: Theyentered and I sat at the door. Then they came out and told methat Abdullah ibn Ukaym had informed them that the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) had written to Juhaynah one monthbefore his death: Do not make use of the skin or sinew of ananimal which died a natural death.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave az-Zubayr the land as a fiefup to the reach of his horse when he runs. He, therefore, madehis horse run until it stopped. He then threw his flog. Thereuponhe said: Give him (the land) up to the point where his flog hasreached.
Umar said: The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) hadtransaction with the Jews of Khaybar on condition that we shouldexpel them when we wish. If anyone has property (with them), heshould take it back, for I am going to expel the Jews. So heexpelled them.
Zayd ibn Aslam said: Abdullah ibn Umar entered upon Mu'awiyah. Heasked: (Tell me) your need, AbuAbdurRahman. He replied: Give (thespoils) to those who were set free, for I saw the first thing theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) did when anything came tohim was to give something to those who had been set free.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived from hishajj, he entered Medina, and made (his camel) kneel down at thegate of his mosque; and he entered it and offered two rak'ahs ofprayer; he then returned to his home. Nafi' said: Ibn Umar alsoused to do so.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) went out on the day ofBadr along with three hundred and fifteen (men). The Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) said: O Allah, they are on foot,provide mount for them; O Allah , they are naked, clothe them; OAllah, they are hungry, provide food for them. Allah thenbestowed victory on them. They returned when they were clothed.There was no man of them but he returned with one or two camels;they were clothed and ate to their fill.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to give to some ofthe detachments he sent out (something extra) for themselves inparticular apart from the division made to the whole army. Thefifth is necessary in all that.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sent a detachment toNajd. I went out along with them, and got abundant riches. Ourcommander gave each of us a camel as a reward. We then came uponthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) and he divided thespoils of war among us. Each of us received twelve camels aftertaking a fifth of it. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)did not take account of our companion (i.e. the commander of thearmy), nor did he blame him for what he had done. Thus each manof us had received thirteen camels with the reward he gave.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sent us along with anarmy towards Najd, and he sent a detachment of that army (to facethe enemy). The whole army got twelve camels per head as theirportion, but he gave the detachment one additional camel (apartfrom the division made to the army). Thus they got thirteencamels each (as a reward).
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up, i.e. on theday of Badr, and said: Uthman has gone off on the business ofAllah and His Apostle, and I shall take the oath of allegiance onhis behalf. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) thenallotted him a share, but did not do so for anyone else who wasabsent.
In the time of the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) an armygot food and honey and a fifth was not taken from them.
Nafi' said that a slave of Ibn Umar ran away to the enemy, andthen the Muslims overpowered them. The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) returned him to Ibn Umar and that was not distributed(as a part of booty).
Ibn Umar was sent with a detachment of the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him). The people wheeled round in flight. He said:I was one of those who wheeled round in flight. When we stopped,we said (i.e. thought): How should we do? We have run away fromthe battlefield and deserve Allah's wrath. Then we said(thought): Let us enter Medina, stay there, and go there while noone sees us. So we entered (Medina) and thought: If we presentourselves before the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him), and ifthere is a change of repentance for us, we shall stay; if thereis something else, we shall go away. So we sat down (waiting) forthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) before the dawn prayer.When he came out, we stood up to him and said: We are the oneswho have fled. He turned to us and said: No, you are the ones whoreturn to fight after wheeling away. We then approached andkissed his hand, and he said; I am the main body of the Muslims.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sat on his camel togo out on a journey, he said: "Allah is Most Great" three times.Then he said: "Glory be to Him Who has made subservient to us,for we had not the strength for it, and to our Lord do we return.O Allah, we ask Thee in this journey of ours, uprightness, pietyand such deeds as are pleasing to Thee. O Allah, make easy for usthis journey of ours and make its length short for us. O Allah,Thou art the Companion in the journey, and the One Who looksafter the family and property in our absence." When he returned,he said these words adding: "Returning, repentant, serving andpraising our Lord." The Prophet (peace be upon him) and hisarmies said: "Allah is Most Great" when they went up to highground; and when armies said: "Allah is most Great" when theywent up to high ground; and when they descended, they said:"Glory be to Allah." So the prayer was patterned on that.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to hold a race betweenhorses and kept the one in the fifth year at a long distance.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to make lean by traininghorses which he employed in the race.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited to ride acamel which eats dung.
It has been prohibited to ride the beast which eats dung.
The tradition mentioned above (No. 2468) has also beentransmitted by Abdullah ibn Budayl through a different chain ofnarrators in a similar way. This version adds: While he (Umar)was observing i'tikaf (in the sacred mosque), the people uttered(loudly): "Allah is most great." He said: What is this,Abdullah? He said: These are the captives of the Hawazin whomthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) has set free. He said:This slave-girl too? He sent her along with them.
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took a vow in thepre-Islamic days to spend a night or a day in devotion near theKa'bah (in the sacred mosque). He asked the Prophet (peace beupon him) about it. He said: Observe i'tikaf (i.e. spend a nightor a day near the Ka'bah) and fast.
Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa' said: I saw Ibn Umar holding hisbread with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it.He (Ibn Umar) told that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said whenhe broke his fast: Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, andthe reward is sure, if Allah wills.
The people sighted the moon, so I informed the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) that I had sighted it. He fasted andcommanded the people to fast.
Husayn ibn al-Harith al-Jadli from the tribe of Jadilah Qayssaid: The governor of Mecca delivered a speech and said: TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) took a pledge from us thatwe should perform the rites of hajj after sighting the moon. Ifwe do not sight it and two reliable persons bear witness, weshould perform the rites of hajj on the basis of their witness. I then asked al-Husayn ibn al-Harith: Who was the governor ofMecca?He replied: I do not know. He then met me later on andtold me: He was al-Harith ibn Hatib, brother of Muhammad ibnHatib. The governor then said: There is among you a man who ismore acquainted with Allah and His Apostle than I. He witnessedthis from the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). He thenpointed with his hand to a man. Al-Husayn said: I asked an oldman beside me: Who is that man to whom the governor has alluded? He said: "This is Abdullah ibn Umar, and he spoke the truth. Hewas more acquainted with Allah than he. He (Abdullah ibn Umar)said: For this is what the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)commanded us (to do).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The month consists oftwenty-nine days, but do not fast till you sight it (the moon)and do not break your fast till you sight it. If the weather iscloudy, calculate it thirty days. When the twenty-ninth ofSha'ban came, Ibn Umar would send someone (who tried) to sightthe moon for him. If it was sighted, then well and good; in caseit was not sighted, and there was no cloud and dust before him(on the horizon), he would not keep fast the next day. If thereappeared (on the horizon) before him cloud or dust, he would fastthe following day. Ibn Umar would end his fasting alone with thepeople, and did not follow this calculation.
AbdurRahman ibn Ayman, the client of Urwah, asked Ibn Umar andAbuzZubayr was was listening: What do you think if a man divorceshis wife while she is menstruating? He said: Abdullah ibn Umardivorced his wife while she was menstruating during the time ofthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him).So Umar asked theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: Abdullah ibn Umardivorced his wife while she was menstruating. Abdullah said: Hereturned her to me and did not count it (the pronouncement)anything. He said: When she is purified, he may divorce her orkeep her with him. Ibn Umar said: The Prophet (peace be upon him)recited the Qur'anic verse: O Prophet, when you divorce women,divorce them in the beginning of their waiting period."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Of all the lawful acts themost detestable to Allah is divorce.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Consult women about (themarriage of) their daughters.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: One of you must not ask awoman in marriage when his brother has done so already, and oneof you must not sell (his own goods) when his brother has alreadysold (his goods) except with his permission.
Nafi' reported on the authority of Ibn Umar. He (ibn Umar) usedto come (to Mina) and threw pebbles three days after the day ofsacrifice walking when arriving and returning (both ways). Hereported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do so.
Ibn Jurayj asked Ibn Umar: We sell the property of the people; soone of us goes to Mecca and passes the night there with theproperty (during the stay at Mina). He said: The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) used to pass night and day at Mina.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) halted on the day ofsacrifice between the jamrahs (pillars at Mina) during hajj whichhe performed. He asked: Which is this day? They replied: This isthe day of sacrifice. He said: This is the day of greater hajj.
Abdullah ibn Malik said: I offered three rak'ahs of the sunsetprayer and two rak'ahs of the night prayer along with Ibn Umar.Thereupon Malik ibn al-Harith said: What is this prayer? He said:I offered these prayers along with the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) in this place with a single iqamah.
When al-Hajjaj killed Ibn Zubayr, he sent a message to Ibn Umarasking him: At which moment the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) used to proceed (to Arafat) this day? He replied: When ithappens so, we shall proceed. When Ibn Umar intended to proceed,the people said: The sun did not decline. He (Ibn Umar) asked:Did it decline? They replied: It did not decline. When they saidthat the sun had declined, he proceeded.
Kathir ibn Jamhan said: A man asked Abdullah ibn Umar betweenas-Safa and al-Marwah: AbdurRahman, I see you walking while thepeople are running (between as-Safa and al-Marwah)? He replied:If I walk, I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)running. I am too old.
Ubayd ibn Jurayj said to Abdullah ibn Umar: AbuAbdurRahman, I sawyou doing things which I did not see being done by yourcompanions. He asked: What are they, Ibn Jurayj? He replied: Isaw you touching only the two Yamani corners; and I saw youwearing shoes having no hair; I saw you dyeing in yellow colour;and I saw you wearing ihram on the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah, whereasthe people had worn ihram when they sighted the moon. Abdullahibn Umar replied: As regards the corners, I have not seen theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) touching anything (in theKa'bah) but the two Yamani corners. As for the tanned leathershoes, I have seen the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)wearing tanned leather shoes, and he would wear them afterablution. Therefore I like to wear them. As regards wearingyellow, I have seen the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)wearing yellow, so I like to wear with it. As regards shoutingthe talbiyah, I have seen the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) raising his voice in talbiyah when his she-camel stood upwith him on its back.
Umar ibn al-Khattab named a bukhti camel for sacrifice (at hajj).He was offered three hundred dinars for it (as its price). Hecame to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: Apostle ofAllah, I named a bukhti camel for sacrifice and I was offered forit three hundred dinars. May I sell it and purchase another onefor its price? No, sacrifice it.
AbuUmamah at-Taymi said: I was a man who used to give(riding-beasts) on hire for this purpose (for travelling duringthe pilgrimage) and the people would tell (me): Your hajj is notvalid. So I met Ibn Umar and told him: AbuAbdurRahman, I am a manwho gives (riding-beast) on hire for this purpose (i.e. forhajj), and the people tell me: Your hajj is not valid. Ibn Umarreplied: Do you not put on ihram (the pilgrim dress), call thetalbiyah (labbayk), circumambulate the Ka'bah, return from Arafatand lapidate jamrahs? I said: Why not? Then he said: Your hajj isvalid. a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and askedhim the same question you have asked me. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) kept silence and did not answer him till thisverse came down: "It is no sin for you that you seek the bountyof your Lord." The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) sent forhim and recited this verse to him and said: Your hajj is valid.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone seeks protectionin Allah's name, grant him protection; if anyone begs in Allah'sname, give him something; if anyone gives you an invitation,accept it; and if anyone does you a kindness, recompense him; butif you have not the means to do so, pray for him until you feelthat you have compensated him.
The people during the lifetime of the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) used to bring forth the sadaqah at the end of Ramadanwhen closing the fast one sa' of barley whose straw is removed,or of raisins. Abdullah said: When Umar (Allah be pleased withhim) succeeded, and the wheat became abundant, Umar prescribedhalf a sa' of wheat instead of all these things.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote a letter aboutsadaqah (zakat) but he died before he could send it to hisgovernors. He had kept it with his sword. So AbuBakr acted uponit till he died, and then Umar acted upon it till he died. Itcontained: "For five camels one goat is to be given; for tencamels two goats are to be given; for fifteen camels three goatsare to be given; for twenty camels four goats are to be given;for twenty-five to thirty-five camels a she-camel in her secondyear is to be given. If the number exceeds by one up to seventycamels, a she-camel in her fourth year is to be given; if theyexceed by one up to seventy-five camels, a she-camel in her fifthyear is to be given; if they exceed by one up to ninety camels,two she-camels in their third year are to be given; if theyexceed by one up to one hundred and twenty, two she-camels intheir fourth year are to be given. If the camels are more thanthis, a she-camel in her fourth year is to be given for everyfifty camels, and a she-camel in her third year is to be givenfor every forty camels. For forty to one hundred and twentygoats one goat is to be given; if they exceed by one up to twohundred, two goats are to be given. If they exceed by one up tothree hundred, three goats are to be given; if the goats are morethan this, one goat for every hundred goats is to be given.Nothing is payable until they reach one hundred. Those which arein one flock are not to be separated, and those which are inseparate flocks are not be brought together from fear of sadaqah(zakat). Regarding that which belongs to two partners, they canmake claims for restitution from each other with equity. An oldgoat and a defective one are not to be accepted as sadaqah(zakat)." Az-Zuhri said: When the collector comes, the goatswill be apportioned into three flocks: one containing bad, thesecond good, and the third moderate. The collector will takezakat from the moderate. Az-Zuhri did not mention the cows (to beapportioned in three flocks).
We counted that the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) wouldsay a hundred times during a meeting: "My Lord, forgive me andpardon me; Thou art the Pardoning and forgiving One".
AbuTamimah al-Hujaymi said: When we came to Medina accompanyingthe caravan, I used to preach after the dawn prayer, andprostrate on account of the recitation of the Qur'an. Ibn Umarprohibited me three times, but I did not ceasedoing that. Hethen repeated (his prohibition) saying: I prayed behind theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him), AbuBakr, Umar and Uthman,they would not prostrate (on account of the recitation of theQur'an) till the sun had risen.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite theQur'an to us. When he came upon the verse containing prostration,he would utter the takbir (Allah is most great) and we wouldprostrate ourselves along with him.
In the year of Conquest the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)recited a verse at which a prostration should be made and all thepeople prostrated themselves. Some were mounted, and some wereprostrating themselves on the ground, and those who were mountedprostrated themselves on their hands.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Prayer by night and dayshould consist of pairs of rak'ahs.
Yasar, the client of Ibn Umar, said: Ibn Umar saw me prayingafter the break of dawn. He said: O Yasar, the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) came to us while we were offering thisprayer. He (the Prophet) said: Those who are present shouldinform those who are absent: Do not offer any prayer after (thebreak of) dawn except two rak'ahs.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: May Allah show mercy to aman who prays four rak'ahs before the afternoon prayer.
Abdullah ibn Dinar said: The sun set when I was with Abdullah ibnUmar. We proceeded, and when we saw that the evening came, wesaid prayer. He went on travelling until the twilight disappearedand the stars became thick. He then slighted and combined the twoprayers. Then he said: I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim); when he hastened his travelling, he would pray like thisprayer of mine. He said: He would combine the two prayers afterthe passing of a part of night. AbuDawud said: This has beentransmitted by Asim ibn Muhammad from his brother on theauthority of Salim and this has also been narrated by IbnAbuNajih from Isma'il ibn AbdurRahman ibn Dhuwayb saying that IbnUmar would combine the two prayers after the disappearance oftwilight.
Abdullah ibn Waqid said: The mu'adhdhin of Ibn Umar said: prayer(i.e. the time of prayer has come). He said: Go ahead. He thenalighted before the disappearance. He then offered the nightprayer. He then said: When the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim) was in a hurry about something, he would do as I did. Thenhe travelled and covered a distance of three days' journey on theday.
Ibn Umar was informed about the death of Safiyyah (the wife ofthe Prophet) when he was at Mecca. He proceeded till the sun setand the stars shined. He said: When the Prophet (peace be uponhim) was in a hurry about something while on a journey, he wouldcombine both these prayers. He proceed till twilight haddisappeared. He then combined both of them (the prayers).
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) went out by one road onthe day of the 'Id (festival) and returned by another.
Ibn Jurayj said: Ata' told me that he saw Ibn Umar pray after theFriday prayer. He moved a little from the place where he offeredthe Friday prayer. Then he would pray two rak'ahs. He then walkedfar away from that place and would offer four rak'ahs. I askedAta': How many times did you see Ibn Umar do that? He replied:Many times. AbuDawud said: This has been narrated by AbdulMalikibn AbuSulayman, but did not narrate it completely.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray two rak'ahsin his house after the Friday prayer.
Nafi' said: Ibn Umar used to lengthen his prayer before theFriday prayer and would offer two rak'ahs after it in his house.He used to say that the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)would do that.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When any of you dozes inthe mosque (on Friday), he should change his place.
Nafi' said: Ibn Umar made the call to prayer at Dajnan (a placebetween Mecca and Medina), on a cold and windy night. He addedthe words at the end of the call: "Lo! pray in your dwellings.Lo! pray in the dwellings." He then said: The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) used to command the mu'adhdhin to announce,"Lo! pray in your dwellings." on a cold or rainy night duringjourney.
Nafi' reported: Ibn Umar made the call to prayer at Dajnan (aplace between Mecca and Medina). Then he announced: "Offer prayerin your dwellings:" He then narrated a tradition from the Apostleof Allah (peace be upon him). He used to command an announcer whomade the call to prayer. He then announced: "Pray in yourdwellings" on a cold or rainy night during journey.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited, according tothe version of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, that a person should sit duringprayer while he is leaning on his hand. According to the versionof Ibn Shibwayh, he prohibited that a man should lean on his handduring prayer. According to the version of Ibn Rafi', heprohibited that a man should pray while he is leaning on hishand, and he mentioned this tradition in the chapter on "Raisingthe head after prostration." According to the version of IbnAbdulMalik, he prohibited that a man should lean on his hand whenhe stands up after prostration.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) went to Quba to offerprayer. Then the Ansar (the Helpers) came to him and gave him asalutation while he was engaged in prayer. I asked Bilal: How didyou find the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) responding tothem when they gave him a salutation while he was engaged inprayer. He replied: In this way, and Ja'far ibn Awn demonstratedby spreading his palm, and keeping its inner side below and itsback side above.
Sa'id ibn Ziyad ibn Subayh al-Hanafi said: I prayed by the sideof Ibn Umar and I put my hands on my waist. When he finished hisprayer, He said: This is a cross in prayer; the Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) used to forbid it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Both hands prostrate as theface prostrates. When one of you puts his face (on the ground) heshould put his hands too (on the ground). And when he raises it,he should raise them too.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Set the rows in order,stand shoulder to shoulder, close the gaps, be pliant in thehands of your brethren, and do not leave openings for the devil.If anyone joins up a row, Allah will join him up, but if anyone breaks a row, Allah will cut him off.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There are three types ofpeople whose prayer is not accepted by Allah: One who goes infront of people when they do not like him; a man who comesdibaran, which means that he comes to it too late; and a man whotakes into slavery an emancipated male or female slave.
Sulayman, the freed slave of Maymunah, said: I came to Ibn Umarat Bilat (a place in Medina) while the people were praying. Isaid: Do you not pray along with them? He said: I heard theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Do not say a prayertwice in a day.
Mujahid reported: I was in the company of Ibn Umar. A personinvited the people for the noon or afternoon prayer (after theadhan had been called). He said: Go out with us (from thismosque) because this is an innovation (in religion).
Bilal made a call to prayer before the break of dawn; the Prophet(peace be upon him), therefore, commanded him to return and makea call: Lo! the servant of Allah (i.e. I) had slept (hence thismistake). The version of Musa has the addition: He returned andmade a call: Lo! the servant of Allah had slept.
The words of adhan were pronounced from the time of the Apostleof Allah (peace be upon him) twice in pairs (i.e. four times)each, and the words of iqamah were pronounced once in pairs(twice each), except that the phrase "The time for prayer hascome" would be pronounced twice. When we heard iqamah, we wouldperform ablution, and go out for prayer. Shu'bah said: I did nothear AbuJa'far narrating any other tradition except this one.
There were fifty prayers (obligatory in the beginning); and (inthe beginning of Islam) washing seven times because of sexualdefilement (was obligatory); and washing the urine from the clothseven times (was obligatory). The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) kept on praying to Allah until the number of prayerswas reduced to five and washing because of sexual defilement wasallowed only once and washing the urine from the clothe was alsopermitted only once.
The Prophet (peace be upon him), was asked about water (in desertcountry) and what is frequented by animals and wild beasts. Hereplied: When there is enough water to fill two pitchers, itbears no impurity.
AbuGhutayf al-Hudhali reported: I was in the company of Ibn Umar.When the call was made for the noon (zuhr) prayer, he performedablution and said the prayer. When the call for the afternoon('asr) prayer was made, he again performed ablution. Thus I askedhim (about the reason of performing ablution). He replied: TheApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: For a man who performsablution in a state of purity, ten virtuous deeds will berecorded (in his favour). AbuDawud said: This is the traditionnarrated by Musaddad, and it is more perfect.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) wanted to relieve himself,he would not raise his garment, until he lowered himself near theground.
Marwan al-Asfar said: I saw Ibn Umar make his camel kneel downfacing the qiblah, then he sat down urinating in its direction.So I said: AbuAbdurRahman, has this not been forbidden? Hereplied: Why not, that was forbidden only in open country; butwhen there is something between you and the qiblah that concealsyou , then there is no harm.
I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) and AbuBakr and Umarwalking before the funeral.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) placed the dead in thegrave, he said: In the name of Allah, and following the Sunnah ofthe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him).
Sa'id ibn Ubaydah said: Ibn Umar heard a man swearing: No, Iswear by the Ka'bah. Ibn Umar said to him: I heard the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) say: He who swears by anyone but Allahis polytheist.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone says whenswearing an oath: "If Allah wills," he makes an exception.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone swears an oathand makes an exception, he may fulfil it if he wishes and breakit if he wishes without any accountability for breaking.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (The standard) weight isthe weight of the people of Mecca, and the (standard) measure isthe measure of the people of Medina.
I used to sell camels at al-Baqi for dinars and take dirhams forthem, and sell for dirhams and take dinars for them. I would takethese for these and give these for these. I went to the Apostleof Allah (peace be upon him) who was in the house of Hafsah. Isaid: Apostle of Allah , take it easy, I shall ask you (aquestion): I sell camels at al-Baqi'. I sell (them) for dinarsand take dirhams and I sell for dirhams and take dinars. I takethese for these, and give these for these. The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) then said: There is no harm in taking them atthe current rate so long as you do not separate leaving somethingto be settled.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade (taking hirefor) a stallion's covering.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone buys a sheepwhose udders have been tied up, he has option for three days (fordecision). If he returns it, he should return with it wheat equalto its milk or double of it.
I heard the Apostle of Allah, (peace be upon him) say: When youenter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, arepleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (strugglein the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you,and will not withdraw it until you return to your originalreligion.
A man paid in advance for a palm-tree. It did not bear fruit thatyear. They brought their case for decision to the Prophet (peacebe upon him). He said: for which do you make his property lawful?He then said: Do not pay in advance for a palm-tree till they(the fruits) were clearly in good condition.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade to sell grainwhich one buys by measurement until one receives it in full.
Yahya ibn Rashid said: We were sitting waiting for Abdullah ibnUmar who came out to us and sat. He then said: I heard theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying: If anyone'sintercession intervenes as an obstacle to one of the punishmentsprescribed by Allah, he has opposed Allah; if anyone disputesknowingly about something which is false, he remains in thedispleasure of Allah till he desists, and if anyone makes anuntruthful accusation against a Muslim, he will be made by Allahto dwell in the corrupt fluid flowing from the inhabitants ofHell till he retracts his statement.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah has cursed wine, itsdrinker, its server, its seller, its buyer, its presser, the onefor whom it is pressed, the one who conveys it, and the one towhom it is conveyed.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who does not accept aninvitation which he receives has disobeyed Allah and His Apostleof, and he who enters without invitation enters as a thief andgoes out as a raider.
Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Umayr said: I was with my father inthe time of Ibn az-Zubayr sitting beside Abdullah ibn Umar. ThenAbbad ibn Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr said: We have heard that theevening meal is taken just before the night prayer. ThereuponAbdullah ibn Umar said: Woe to you! what was their evening meal?Do you think it was like the meal of your father?
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade two kinds offood: to sit at cloth on which wine is drunk, and to eat by a manwhile lying on his stomach.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) prohibited eating theanimal which feeds on filth and drinking its milk.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade riding the camelwhich feeds on filth and drinking its milk.
Numaylah said: I was with Ibn Umar. He was asked about eatinghedgehog. He recited: "Say: I find not in the message received byme by inspiration any (meat) forbidden." An old man who was withhim said: I heard AbuHurayrah say: It was mentioned to theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him). Noxious of the noxious. IbnUmar said: If the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) had saidit, it is as he said that we did not know.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I wish I had a white loafmade from tawny and softened with clarified butter and milk. Aman from among the people got up and getting one brought it. Heasked: In which had it been? He replied: In a lizard skin. Hesaid: Take it away.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was brought a piece of cheese inTabuk. He called for a knife, mentioned Allah's name and cut it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who eats from this plantshould not come near the mosques.
Atiyyah ibn Sa'd al-Awfi said: I recited to Abdullah ibn Umar theverse: "It is Allah Who created you in a state of (helplessness)weakness (min da'f)." He said: (Read) min du'f. I recited it tothe Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) as you recited it to me,and he gripped me as I gripped you.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) as saying: If anyone wears agarment for gaining fame, Allah will clothe him in a similargarment on the Day of Resurrection.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who copies any people isone of them.
Zayd ibn Aslam said: Ibn Umar used to dye his beard with yellowcolour so much so that his clothes were filled (dyed) withyellowness. He was asked: Why do you dye with yellow colour? Hereplied: I saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) dyeingwith yellow colour, and nothing was dearer to him than it. Hewould dye all his clothes with it, even his turban.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Hanging down is in lowergarment, shirt and turban. If anyone trails any of themconceitedly, Allah will not look at him on the Day ofResurrection.
What the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said about lowergarment also applies to shirt.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gave licence to othersof the believers (i.e. the wives of the Prophet) to hang downtheir lower garment a span. Then they asked him to increase it,and he increased one span for them. They would send (the garment)to us and we would measure it one forearm's length for them.
Sa'id ibn Amr al-Qurashi quoting his father said: Ibn Umar (once)saw some fellow travellers of the Yemen. They had their saddles(on camels) of leather. He said: If anyone likes to see thefellow travellers most resembling to the Companions of theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him), he should see them.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) came to Fatimah andfound a curtain hanging at her door, so he did not enter.Whenever he entered (the house), he would visit her first. ThenAli came and found that Fatimah was grieved. He asked: What isthe matter with you? She replied: The Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) came to me but did not enter (the house). Ali thencame to him and said: Apostle of Allah, Fatimah felt it keenlythat you came to visit her but did not go in. He replied: Whathave I to do with this world? What have I to do with prints andfigures (on the curtain)? He (Ali) then went to Fatimah andinformed her of what the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) hadsaid. She said: Ask the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)what he me to do about it. He (the Prophet) said: Tell her thatshe must send it to so-and-so.
the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade qaza' which means thatthe head of a boy is shaved and a lock is left.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) saw a boy with part of his headshaved and part left unshaven. He forbade them to do that,saying: Shave it all or leave it all.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wear tanned leathersandals and dye his beard yellow with wars and saffron.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wear the signet-ring onhis left hand, and put its stone next the palm of his hand.
When we were sitting with the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim), he talked about periods of trial (fitnahs), mentioning manyof them. When he mentioned the one when people should stay intheir houses, some asked him: Apostle of Allah, what is the trial(fitnah) of staying at home? He replied: It will be flight andplunder. Then will come a test which is pleasant. Its murkinessis due to the fact that it is produced by a man from the peopleof my house, who will assert that he belongs to me, whereas hedoes not, for my friends are only the God-fearing. Then thepeople will unite under a man who will be like a hip-bone on arib. Then there will be the little black trial which will leavenone of this community without giving him a slap, and when peoplesay that it is finished, it will be extended. During it a manwill be a believer in the morning and an infidel in the evening,so that the people will be in two camps: the camp of faith whichwill contain no hypocrisy, and the camp of hypocrisy which willcontain no faith. When that happens, expect the Antichrist(Dajjal) that day or the next.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Muslims will soon bebesieged up to Medina, so that their most distant frontieroutpost will be Salah.
AbdurRahman ibn Samurah said: I was holding the hand of Ibn Umaron one of the ways of Medina. He suddenly came to a hanging head.He said: Unhappy is the one who killed him. When he proceeded, hesaid: I do not consider him but unfortunate. I heard the Apostleof Allah (peace be upon him) say: If anyone goes to a man of mycommunity in order to kill him, he should say in this way, theone who kills will go to Hell and the one who is killed will goto Paradise.
Nafi' told that Ibn Umar used to say: I swear by Allah that I donot doubt that Antichrist is Ibn Sayyad.
Some people raided the camels of the Prophet (peace be upon him),drove them off, and apostatised. They killed the herdsman of theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) who was a believer. He (theProphet) sent (people) in pursuit of them and they were caught.He had their hands and feet cut off, and their eyes put out. Theverse regarding fighting against Allah and His Prophet (peace beupon him) was then revealed. These were the people about whomAnas ibn Malik informed al-Hajjaj when he asked him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) had a man's hand cut off who hadstolen from the place reserved for women a shield whose price wasthree dirhams.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The Qadariyyah are theMagians of this community. If they are ill, do not pay a sickvisit to them, and if they die, do not attend their funerals.
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him), another man got upfrom his place for him, and when he went to sit in it, theProphet (peace be upon him) forbade him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Make a mention of thevirtues of your dead, and refrain from (mentioning) their evils.
Nafi' said: Ibn Umar heard a pipe, put his fingers in his earsand went away from the road. He said to me: Are you hearinganything? I said: No. He said: He then took his fingers out ofhis ears and said: I was with the Prophet (peace be upon him),and he heard like this and he did like this. AbuAli al-Lu'lusaid: I heard AbuDawud say: This is a rejected tradition.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) went to his bed, hewould say: Praise be to Allah Who has given me sufficiency, hasguarded me, given me food and drink, been most gracious to me,and given to me most lavishly. Praise be to Allah in everycircumstance. O Allah! Lord and King of everything, God ofeverything, I seek refuge in Thee from Hell.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) never failed to utterthese supplications in the evening and in the morning: O Allah, Iask Thee for security in this world and in the Hereafter: OAllah! I ask Thee for forgiveness and security in my religion andmy worldly affairs, in my family and my property; O Allah!conceal my fault or faults (according to Uthman's version), andkeep me safe from the things which I fear; O Allah! guard me infront of me and behind me, on my right hand and on my left, andfrom above me: and I seek in Thy greatness from receivingunexpected harm from below me." AbuDawud said: Waki' said: Thatis to say, swallowing by the earth.
A woman was my wife and I loved her, but Umar hated her. He saidto me: Divorce her, but I refused. Umar then went to the Prophet(peace be upon him) and mentioned that to him. The Prophet (peacebe upon him) said: Divorce her.
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked: Apostleof Allah! how often shall I forgive a servant? He gave no reply,so the man repeated what he had said, but he still kept silence.When he asked a third time, he replied: Forgive him seventy timesdaily.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When one of the Jews greetsyou saying: Death may come upon you, reply: The same to you.
Ibn Umar told a story and said: We then came near the Prophet(peace be upon him) and kissed his hand.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited that one, i.e. man,should walk between two women.
Allah's Apostle said, "He who buys foodstuff should not sell it till he is satisfied with the measure with which he has bought it."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah, the Lord of honour and glory, will accept the repentance of His servant till his death-rattle begins."

Allah's Messenger (Peace and blessings of Allah) said: This (Sa'd), for whom the Throne (of Allah) was stirred and there were opened for him the doors of Heaven and seventy thousand angels participated (in his funeral prayer), (his grave) was compressed and later on it was expanded for him.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Verily my Ummah, or the Ummah of Muhammad, will not agree on error and the hand of Allah is upon the community; he who sets himself apart from it will be set apart in Hell Fire.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who performs ablution when he is already pure there will be recorded ten blessings for him.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The best friend in the sight of Allah is he who is the well-wisher of his companions, and the best neighbour is one who behaves best towards his neighbours.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The menstruating women and the junubi should not recite anything from the Qur'an.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The early time of prayer is a pleasure of Allah, and the late hours is forgiveness of Allah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Three persons will be on the hillock of musk on the Day of Resurrection: The slave who performs the duties that he owes to Allah and the duties that he owes to his master, the person who leads the people in prayer and they are well pleased with him, and the person who calls people to five prayers every day and night.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who pronounces the Adhan for twelve years is assured of Paradise and sixty merits are recorded for him every day for (every) Adhan and thirty merits for every Iqamah.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There are two characteristics (responsibilities) with the Mu'adhdhins in regard to the Muslims: Their fasting and their prayer.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) prohibited the observance of prayers in seven places: on a dung hill, in a slaughterhouse, in a graveyard, in the middle of the road, in a bathroom, in the watering place where camels drink and sit, and upon the roof of the House of Allah.

During the days of the Prophet (peace be upon him) we used to eat while walking and drink water while standing.

It was rare that the Prophet (peace be upon him) departed from a company without praying in these words: 'O Allah! grant us so much (Thy) fear that it may serve as a barrier between us and our sins; and bestow upon us Thy obedience that it may help us to reach Thy Paradise; and grant us so much faith that it may help us to face the misfortunes of this world easily. O Allah! bless us to benefit from our powers of hearing and seeing and vigour so long as Thou dost grant us life and make our heirs (beneficiaries) of them; and afflict with our rancour those who oppress us, and help us against those who are our enemies; do not entangle us in the difficulties of our religion; and do not make the world our main object, and the extent our knowledge; and do not appoint over us persons who will not show mercy to us.'

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) used to recited in the sunset prayer: `Say, O non believers..' (109) and `Say, Allah is One..'. (112)

As Abdullah ibn Umar sat during the prayer, he placed his hands upon his knees and pointed with his finger (the Oneness of Allah) and cast a full glance towards it. Then reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: It has a more terrible effect upon Satan than even that of iron i.e. the effect of (attesting the Oneness of Allah) with the help of the forefinger.

I asked Bilal: How did Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) respond to them as they greeted him while he was in prayer? Thereupon he said: He only made a gesture with his hands (in order to respond to the greeting).

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: No one should prevent his family from coming to the mosques. A son of Abdullah ibn Umar said: We would prevent them. Thereupon Abdullah said: I am narrating to you (a command) of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and you (have the audacity) to say (these words). Abdullah (was so annoyed with this) that he did not talk to him till he died.

I observed the Prophet (peace be upon him) for a month reciting chapters 109 and 112 in the two rak'ahs before the dawn Prayer.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) used to direct us to make the prayer light and he used to recite as-Saffat (37) when he was our Imam.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: May Allah have mercy upon a person who observes four rak'ahs (nafl) before Asr (afternoon prayer).

When travelling I prayed along with the Prophet (peace be upon him) two rak'ahs at the noon prayer and two after it." In another version he said, "I prayed with the Prophet both when resident and when travelling. When resident I prayed along with him four rak'ahs at the noon prayer and two after it, and when travelling two at it and two after it; two rak'ahs at the afternoon prayer after which he prayed no more; and both when resident and travelling alike three rak'ahs at the sunset prayer, in which he never prayed less whether resident or travelling, this being the witr of the daytime. After it he prayed two rak'ahs.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When any of you dozes on Friday, he should change his place."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) stayed ten years in Medina, and he used to observe the sacrifice.

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) heard the sound of thunder and of thunderbolts he said, "O Allah, do not kill us with Thine anger and do not destroy us with Thy punishment, but preserve us before that happens."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying that this is a gharib tradition.
When the dead person was placed in the grave the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "In the name of Allah, by Allah's grace, and the following the religion of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)." One version has, "And following the Sunnah of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)."
Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, and AbuDawud transmitted it second version.
Ibn Umar heard a man say: No, by the Ka'bah, and admonished him: Do not swear by anything beside Allah, for I have heard the Prophet say: He who swears by anything beside Allah is guilty of an act of disbelief (or of associating something with Allah).

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade the following of a bier which was accompanied by a woman wailing shrilly.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who acquires property is not liable for zakat on it till a year passes."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, mentioning that many traced the tradition no farther back than Ibn Umar.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, regarding honey, "A skin is payable on every ten."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying its isnad is criticised and that little on this subject is soundly reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Paradise is decorated for Ramadan from the beginning of the year till a following year, and when the first day of Ramadan comes, a wind under the throne blows some of the leaves of paradise on the maidens with large bright eyes, and they say, 'My Lord, appoint us husbands from among Thy servants, with whom we shall be happy and who will be happy with us."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Nafi', on Ibn Umar's authority, reported the Prophet (peace be upon him) as saying, "If anyone dies when the fasting in the month of Ramadan has been unfulfilled by him, a poor man should be fed on his behalf in place of every day."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying that correctly this goes no farther back than Ibn Umar.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) observed a period of private devotion in the mosque, his bedding was placed for him, or a couch was put down for him, behind the column of repentance.
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "These hearts become rusty just as iron does when water affects it." On being asked what could clear them he replied, "A great amount of remembrance of death and recitation of the Qur'an."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Can one of you not recite a thousand verses daily?" Then when he was asked who could recite a thousand verses daily he replied, "Can one of you not recite 'Rivalry has distracted you'?"
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If the gate of supplication is opened for any of you, the gates of mercy will be opened for him, and Allah is not asked for anything He likes so much as to be asked for security."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Ibn Umar used to say, "Your raising of your hands is an innovation. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) did no more than this," meaning that he raised them to his breast.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Do not speak much without mentioning Allah, for much talk without mention of Allah produces hardness of heart, and the one who is farthest from Allah is he who has a hard heart."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah accepts a servant's repentance till he gives up his spirit in death."

When we were with the Prophet (peace be upon him) on one of his expeditions he came upon some people and asked who they were, to which they replied that they were Muslims. A woman who had a son of hers with her was kindling a fire under her pot, and when the heat increased she moved him away. She then went to the Prophet (peace be upon him and grant him peace) and asked, "You for whom I would give my father and mother as ransom, tell me if Allah is not the Most Merciful of those who are merciful." He replied that He certainly was. She asked, "Is Allah not More Merciful to His servants than a mother to her child?" and when he assured her that He certainly was, she replied that a mother does not cast her child into the fire. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) then bowed his head and wept, and afterwards raised it, looked at her and said, "Allah punishes only those of His servants who act audaciously towards Him and refuse to say that there is no god but Allah."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) seldom got up to leave an assembly without using these supplications for his companions: "O Allah, apportion to us such fear of Thee as will come between us and acts of disobedience to Thee, such obedience to Thee as will bring us to Thy Paradise, and such certainty that the calamities of this world will be made easy for us by Thee. Let us enjoy our hearing, our sight and our power as long as Thou dost grant us life, and do the same for those who inherit from us. Grant us revenge on those who have wronged us and help us against those who are hostile to us. Let no calamity befall our religion, let not worldly affairs be our greatest care of all that we know about, and let not those who do not show mercy towards us rule over us."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked what was necessary for one to perform the pilgrimage. He replied, "Provisions and a riding-beast."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
A man asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) to describe a pilgrim, and he replied, "Unkempt and unperfumed." Another got up and asked which part of the pilgrimage was most excellent, and he replied, "Raising the voice in the talbiyah and shedding the blood of sacrificial victims." Another got up and asked the meaning of sabil, and he replied, "Provisions and a riding-beast."
It is transmitted it Sharh as-Sunnah, and Ibn Majah transmitted it in his Sunan without mentioning the last section.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When you meet one who has performed the pilgrimage, greet him, shake hands with him and tell him to ask forgiveness for you before he enters his house, for he has been forgiven."

Ibn Umar heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "The Corner and the Station are two of the sapphires of Paradise whose light Allah has obliterated. If He had not done so, they would have illuminated everything between the East and West."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Ubayd ibn Umayr said: Ibn Umar used to press towards the two corners in a manner in which I had not seen any of the companions of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) press. He said, "If I do so, it is because I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say that stroking them is an atonement for sins. And I heard him say that if anyone goes round this House for a week and counts his circuits, it will be like setting free a slave. I heard him say that no one will place one foot on the ground and raise the other without Allah removing a sin from him on account of it and recording a blessing for him on account of it."'

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was in the sacred state he used to grease himself with olive-oil which was not muqattat, which means perfumed.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Let him who can die in Medina, for I shall intercede for those who die in it."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying this is a hasan sahih tradition whose isnad is gharib.
If anyone buys a garment for ten dirhams among which is one unlawfully acquired, Allah Most High will not accept prayer from him as long as he wears it. He (Ibn Umar) then put a finger in each ear and said, "May they become deaf if the Prophet (peace be upon him) was not the one I heard say it!."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman, saying that its isnad is weak.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade selling a debt to be paid at a future date for another.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone enters a garden he may eat, but he must not take anything away in his clothing."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "An estate which was divided in the pre-Islamic period followed the division in force then, but any estate in Islamic times must follow the division appointed by Islam."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Avoid being naked, for with you are those who never leave you except when you are relieving yourselves and when a man has intercourse with his wife; so observe modesty before them and honour them."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Ghaylan ibn Salamah ath-Thaqafi accepted Islam and that he had ten wives in the pre-Islamic period who accepted Islam along with him; so the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him to keep four and separate from the rest of them.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone buys a slave and makes no stipulation about his property, he receives none of it."

Ibn Umar heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "He who swears by anyone but Allah is a polytheist."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If a man seizes a man and another kills him, the one who killed him is to be killed and the one who seized him is to be imprisoned."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Jahannam has seven gates, one of which is for those who draw a sword against my people," or he said, "against Muhammad's people."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "There are three people to whom Allah has forbidden Paradise: one who is addicted to wine, an undutiful son, and a cuckold who agrees to his womenfolk's adultery."

Ibn Umar said to Uthman, "Commander of the faithful, I shall not pronounce judgment between two men." He replied, "Your father used to do so." He said, "If anything seemed dubious to my father he asked Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him), and if anything seemed dubious to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) he asked Gabriel. I can find no one to ask, and I heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, 'He who seeks refuge in Allah has sought refuge in a great One.' I also heard him say, 'Grant refuge to him who seeks refuge in Allah', and I seek refuge in Allah from your making me a qadi." So he excused him, but said, "Do not tell anyone."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Two types of animals which have died a natural death and two types of blood have been made allowable to us: the two which die a natural death being the fish and the locust, and the two types of blood being the liver and the spleen."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When the cloth is set down a man must not get up till it is removed, nor must he withdraw his hand even if he has had enough till the people have finished, but if he does he should make his excuse, for that embarrasses his companion and he does not stretch out his hand although he may perhaps require the food."
Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.
In the time of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) we used to eat while walking and drink while standing.
Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a hasan sahih gharib tradition.
When Allah's Messenger put on a turban he let the end hang between his shoulders.
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wear tanned leather sandals and dye his beard yellow with wars and saffron. And Ibn Umar used to do that.
Nasa'i transmitted it.
Nafi' said Ibn Umar told him he was suffering from high blood pressure and asked him to bring him a cupper, telling him to be sure to bring a young man and see that he brought neither an old man nor a boy. And Ibn Umar said he had heard Allah's Messenger say, "Cupping before food is best; it increases the intelligence, improves the memory and improves the memory of one who has a good memory. He who has himself cupped should choose Thursday, doing it in the name of Allah Most High; but avoid cupping on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hare yourselves cupped on Monday and Tuesday, but avoid cupping on Wednesday for it is the day when Job was smitten with affliction. Tubercular leprosy and leprosy make their appearance only on Wednesday or Tuesday night."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
When a man sneezed beside Ibn Umar and said, "Praise be to Allah and blessing on Allah's Messenger!" Ibn Umar said he also said, "Praise be to Allah and blessing on Allah's Messenger!" but not in that way, for Allah's Messenger had taught them to say, "Praise be to Allah in every circumstance!"
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When a man lies, the angel moves a mile from him because of the bad odour of what he has produced."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The believer is not given to cursing." One version says "It is not fitting for a believer to be given to cursing."

A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed a serious sin. Can I do any act of penitence?" He asked him if he had a mother, and when he replied that he had not, he asked if he had a maternal aunt. On his replying that he had, he said, "Then do kindness to her."
Transmitted by Tirmidhi.
I had a wife whom I loved but whom Umar disliked. He told me to divorce her and when I refused, Umar went to Allah's Messenger and mentioned the matter to him. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) then told me to divorce her.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) mounted the pulpit and called in a loud voice, "You who have accepted Islam with your tongues but whose hearts have not been reached by faith, do not annoy the Muslims, or revile them, or seek out their faults; for he who seeks out the faults of his brother Muslim will have his faults sought out by Allah and he whose faults are sought out by Allah will be exposed by Him, even though he should be in the interior of his house."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "He who mixes with people and endures the harm they do is better than he who does not mix with them or endure the harm they do."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "No one has swallowed back anything more excellent in the sight of Allah, Who is Great and Glorious, than anger he restrains, seeking to please Allah most high."
Ahmad transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) heard a man belching and said, "Diminish your belching, for the one who will suffer the severest hunger on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who has had the most to eat in the world."
It is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah, and Tirmidhi transmitted something to the same effect.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Allah, Who is Blessed and Exalted had said, "I have created creatures whose tongues are sweeter than sugar but whose hearts are more bitter than aloes. I swear by myself that I shall certainly bring upon them trial which will leave the intelligent man among them confounded. Are they trying to deceive me, or are they acting presumptuously towards me?"
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When my people swagger and are served by the sons of kings, the sons of the Persians and Byzantines, Allah will give their worst ones rule over their best ones."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone would like to look at the Day of Resurrection as though it were before his eyes, he should recite: 'When the sun is obscured 'When the sky shall be split open", and 'When the sky shall be rent asunder'."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The breadth of the gate by which my people will enter Paradise will be a three years' journey for a fine rider, yet they will be so crushed that they will almost lose their shoulders."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying that this is a weak tradition, and that when he asked Muhammad ibn Isma'il about this tradition he did not know it, adding that Yakhlud ibn AbuBakr transmitted disacknowledged traditions.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The lowest in station among the inhabitants of Paradise will be he who looks at his gardens, his wives, his bliss, his servants, and his couches stretching a thousand years' journey, and the one who will be most honoured by Allah will be he who looks at His face morning and evening." He then recited, "Faces on that day will be bright, looking at their Lord."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The infidel will drag his tongue a league and two leagues with people treading on it."
Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it, the latter saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Thaqif will have among them a great liar and one who causes destruction." Abdullah ibn Asma told that it was said the great liar was al-Mukhtar ibn AbuUbayd and the one who caused destruction al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. Hisham ibn Hassan said they calculated the number of those in custody killed by al-Hajjaj and it reached a hundred and twenty thousand.

Allah's messenger (peace be upon him) said to AbuBakr, "You were my companion in the cave, and you will be my companion at the reservoir.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "I am the first from whom the Earth will burst open, then AbuBakr and then Umar. I shall then come to those who are buried in al-Baqi' and they will be gathered along with me. After that I shall wait for the people of Mecca so as to be gathered among the inhabitants of the two sacred cities."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Allah has placed truth upon Umar's tongue and heart."
Tirmidhi transmitted it. In AbuDawud's version on the authority of AbuDharr he said, 'Allah has placed truth on Umar's tongue and he speaks it."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) went out one day and entered the mosque with AbuBakr and Umar , one on his right and the other on his left, holding their hands. He said, "We shall be raised thus on the Day of Resurrection."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) mentioned a civil commotion and said of Uthman, "This one will be wrongfully killed in it."

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was alive we used to say, "AbuBakr, Umar and Uthman, Allah be pleased with them!"

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) arranged brotherhoods among his companions, Ali came weeping and said, "You have arranged brotherhoods among your companions, but you have arranged no brotherhood between me and anyone." He replied, "Your are my brother in this world and the next."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Al-Hasan and al-Husayn are my offspring in the world."

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A fire will issue from the direction of Hadramawt (or from Hadramawt) and assemble mankind." He was asked what he commanded them to do and replied, "Go to Syria."

The Messenger of Allah observed: O women, you should give charityand ask for much forgiveness for I saw you in bulk amongst thedwellers of Hell. A wise lady among them said: Why is it,Messenger of Allah, that our folk is in bulk in Hell? Upon thisthe Holy Prophet observed: You curse too much and are ungratefulto your spouses. I have seen none lacking in common sense andfailing in religion but (at the same time) robbing the wisdom ofthe wise, besides you.Upon this the woman remarked: What iswrong with our common sense and with religion? He (the Holyprophet) observed: Your lack of common sense (can be well judgedfrom the fact) that the evidence of two women is equal to that ofone man, that is a proof of the lack of common sense, and youspend some nights (and days) in which you do not offer prayer andin the month of Ramadan (during the days) you do not observefast, that is a failing in religion. This hadith has beennarrated on the authority of AbuTahir with this chain oftransmitters.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) observed: Verily Islamstarted as something strange and it would again revert (to itsold position) of being strange just as it started, and it wouldrecede between the two mosques just as the serpent crawls backinto its hole.
Ibn Umar came to Ibn Amir in order to inquire after his health ashe was ailing. He said: Ibn Umar, why don't you pray to Allah forme? He said: I heard of Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) say:Neither the prayer is accepted without purification nor ischarity accepted out of the ill-gotten (wealth), and thou wertthe (governor) of Basrah.
A person happened to pass by the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him) when he was making water and saluted him, but he didnot respond to his salutation.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had two Mu'adhdhins,Bilal and Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, who (latter)was blind.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When any one ofyou prays, he should not allow anyone to pass before him, and ifhe refuses, he should be then forcibly resisted, for there is adevil with him.
When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sat for tashahhudhe placed his left hand on his left knee, and his right hand onhis right knee, and he raised his right finger, which is next tothe thumb, making supplication in this way, and he stretched hisleft hand on his left knee. Another version on the authority ofIbn Umar says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)sat for tashahhud, he placed his left hand on his left knee andplaced his right hand on his right knee, and he formed a ringlike ...(fifty three) and pointed with his finger of attestation.
While we said prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) one among the people said: Allah is truly Great, praise beto Allah in abundance. Glory be to Allah in the morning and theevening. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whouttered such and such a word? A person among the people said: Itis I, Messenger of Allah (who have recited these words). He (theProphet) said: It (its utterance) surprised me, for the doors ofheaven were opened for it. Ibn Umar said: I have not abandonedthem (these words ) since I heard the Messenger of Allah (peacebe upon him) saying this.
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as saying: Letthe bedouin not gain upper hand over you in regard to the name ofyour prayer. See! (The night prayer should be called) Isha' (andthe bedouins call it Atamah (because) they milk their camelslate.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say Naflprayer on (the back of) his camel in whatever direction it tookhim.
It was narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) had said: The prayer observed by a person sitting is half ofthe prayer. I came to him (peace be upon him) and found himpraying in a sitting position. I placed my hand on his head. Hesaid: O Abdullah ibn Amr, what is the matter with you? I said:Messenger of Allah, it has been narrated to me that you said: Theprayer of a man in a sitting position is half of the prayer,whereas you are observing prayer sitting. He (the Prophet) said:Yes, it is so, but I am not like anyone amongst you.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Hasten to prayWitr before morning.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: Witr is a rak'ahat the end of the prayer.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The night prayerconsists of pairs and when you see the approach of dawn, makethis number odd by one rak'ah. It was said to Ibn Umar: What doesthe (word) pair imply? He said: (It means) that salutation isuttered after every two rak'ahs.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The example of a manwho has memorised the Qur'an is like that of a hobbled camel. Ifhe remained vigilant, he would be able to retain it (with him),and if he loosened the hobbled camel it would escape.
When Abdullah ibn Umar observed the Friday prayer and came backhe observed two rak'ahs in his house, and then said: TheMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to do this.
While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim), a person, one of the Ansar, came to him and greeted him.The Ansari then turned back. Upon this the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) said: O brother of Ansar, how is my brotherSa'd ibn Ubadah? He said: He is better. The Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) said: Who amongst you would visit him? He(the Prophet) stood up and we also got up along with him, and wewere more than ten persons. We had neither shoes with us, norsocks, nor caps, nor shirts. We walked on the barren land till wecame to him. The people around him kept away till the Messengerof Allah (peace be upon him) and his Companions with him camenear him (Sa'd ibn Ubadah).
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The dead ispunished because of the lamentation of the living.
Khaythamah reported: While we were sitting in the company ofAbdullah ibn Umar there came in his steward. He (Ibn Umar) said:Have you supplied the provision to the slaves? He said: No. Uponthis he said: Go and give (the provision) to them, for theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) has said: This sin isenough for a man that he withholds the subsistence from one whosemaster he is.
Some persons among the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (peacebe upon him) were shown Laylat al-Qadr while sleeping in the lastweek (of Ramadan). Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) said: I see that your dreams agree regarding the last week;so he who wants to seek it should seek it in the last week(during the night).
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) spent the night atDhul-Hulayfah while commencing (the rites of) Pilgrimage and heobserved prayer in the mosque.
Nafi' thus reported on the authority of Ibn Umar: We entered intothe state of Ihram with Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forHajj Mufrad and in the narration of Ibn Awn (the words are):"Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) entered into the state ofIhram (with the intention) of Hajj Mufrad."
Wabarah reported: While I was sitting in the company of Ibn Umar,a person came to him and said: Is it right for me tocircumambulate the House before I come to stay (at Arafat)? IbnUmar said: Yes, whereupon he said: Ibn Abbas, however, says: Donot circumambulate the House until you come to stay at Arafat.Thereupon Ibn Umar said: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)performed the Hajj and circumambulated the House before coming tostay (at Arafat). If you say the Truth, is it more rightful tofollow the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him) or the wordsof Ibn Abbas?
Nafi' reported on the authority of Ibn Umar (Allah be pleasedwith them) that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) walkedswiftly from stone to stone in three circuits and walked(normally) in four.
Ibn Umar had not seen Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)touching anything in the House, except the two Yamani corners.
Ibn Umar said: As we proceeded in the morning along with Allah'sMessenger (peace be upon him) from Mina to Arafat, some of uspronounced Talbiyah, and some pronounced Takbir (AllahuAkbar).
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) observed thecircumambulation of Ifadah on the Day of Nahr (10th ofDhul-Hijjah), and then came back and observed the noon prayer atMina. Nafi' (one of the narrators) said that Ibn Umar used toobserve the circumambulation of Ifadah on the Day of Nahr, andthen return and observe the noon prayer at Mina, and mentionedthat Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) did that.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) and AbuBakr and Umarobserved halt at al-Abtah.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who patientlyendures the hardships of it (of this city of Medina), I would bean intercessor or a witness on his behalf on the Day ofResurrection.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Prayer in this mosqueof mine is better than a thousand prayers (observed in othermosques) besides it, except that of Masjid al-Haram.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When any one of youis invited to a feast, he should attend it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Do not go out to meetmerchandise in the way, (wait) until it is brought into themarket. This hadith has been reported on the authority of IbnNumayr but with a slight change of words.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade the sale ofpalm-trees (i.e. their fruits) until the dates began to ripen,and ears of corn until they were white and were safe from blight.He forbade the seller and the buyer.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) ordered the killing of dogsexcept the dog tamed for hunting, or watching of the herd ofsheep or other domestic animals. It was said to Ibn Umar (Allahbe pleased with them) that AbuHurayrah (Allah be pleased withhim) talks of (exception) about the dog for watching the field,whereupon he said: Since AbuHurayrah (Allah be pleased with him)possessed land.
Zadhan AbuUmar said: I came to Ibn Umar as he had granted freedomto a slave. He (the narrator further) said: He took hold of awood or something like it from the earth and said: It (freedom ofa slave) has not the reward even equal to it, but the fact that Iheard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say: He who slaps hisslave or beats him, the expiation for it is that he should sethim free.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Behold! theDispensers of Justice will be seated on the pulpits of lightbeside God, on the right side of the Merciful, Exalted andGlorious. Either side of the Being is the right side both beingequally meritorious. (The Dispensers of Justice are) those who dojustice in their rules, in matters relating to their families andin all that they undertake to do.
Nafi' said: Abdullah ibn Umar paid a visit to Abdullah ibn Muti'in the days (when atrocities were perpetrated on the people ofMedina) at Harrah in the time of Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah. Ibn Muti'said: Place a pillow for AbuAbdurRahman (family name of Abdullahibn Umar). But the latter said: I have not come to sit with you.I have come to you to tell you a tradition I heard from theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I heard him say: One whowithdraws his hand from obedience (to the Amir) will find noargument (in his defence) when he stands before Allah on the Dayof Judgment, and one who dies without having bound himself by anoath of allegiance (to an Amir) will die the death of onebelonging to the days of Jahiliyyah.
It was forbidden to prepare Nabidh by mixing unripe dates andfresh dates, and dates with grapes.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) addressed people in one ofhis expeditions. Ibn Umar said: I went forward to him but he wentaway before I reached him. I asked (the people present there):What did he say? They said that he (the Prophet) had forbiddenthe preparation of Nabidh in gourd and varnished jar.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Every intoxicant isKhamr and every intoxicant is forbidden. He who drinks wine inthis world and dies while he is addicted to it, not havingrepented, will not be given a drink in the Hereafter.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: When any one of youintends to eat (meal), he should eat with his right hand, andwhen he (intends) to drink he should drink with his right hand,for the Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his lefthand.
I happened to pass before Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)with my lower garment trailing (upon the ground). He said:Abdullah, tug up your lower garment. I tugged it up, and he againsaid: Tug it still further, and I tugged it still further and Iwent on tugging it afterward, whereupon some of the people said:To what extent? Thereupon he said: To the middle of the shanks.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The names dearest toAllah are Abdullah and AbdurRahman.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) changed the name of Asiyah(Disobedient) and said: You are Jamilah (i.e. good and handsome).Ahmad (one of the narrators) narrated it with a slight variationof wording.
Nafi' reported that when Ibn Umar wanted fumigation he got itfrom aloes-wood without mixing anything with it, or he putcamphor along with aloes-wood and then said: This is how Allah'sMessenger (peace be upon him) fumigated.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The pious dreams arethe seventieth part of Prophecy.
Umar said: My lord concorded with (my judgments) on threeoccasions. In case of the Station of Ibrahim, in case of theobservance of veil and in case of the prisoners of Badr.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: The finest act ofgoodness is the kind treatment of a person to the loved ones ofhis father after his death.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: It is not permissiblefor a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyondthree days.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is a measure foreverything - even for incapacity and capability.
I went to Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) in the morning andhe heard the voice of two persons who had an argument with eachother about a verse. Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) came tous (and) the (signs) of anger could be seen on his face. He said:Verily, the (peoples) before you were ruined because of theirdisputation in the Book.
Ibn Umar commanded a person that as he went to bed, he shouldsay: "O Allah, Thou created my being and it is for Thee to takeit to its ultimate goal. And its death and life is due to Thee,and if Thou givest it life, safeguard it; and if Thou bringstdeath, grant it pardon. O Allah, I beg of Thee safety." A personsaid to him: Did you hear it from Umar? Thereupon he said:(I haveheard from one) who is better than Umar, viz from Allah's Apostle(peace be upon him).
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) supplicated in these words: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the withdrawal of Thineblessing and the change of Thine protection (from me) and fromthe sudden wrath of Thine, and from every displeasure of Thine."
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone drinks wine Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he again repeats the offence Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents Allah will forgive him. If he repeats it a fourth time Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, and if he repents Allah will not forgive him, but will give him to drink of the river of the fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hell."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it on the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Enforcing one of Allah's prescribed punishments is better than forty nights' rain in Allah's land."
Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Nasa'i transmitted it on the authority of AbuHurayrah.
Ibn Umar and AbuHurayrah heard Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) say on the planks of his pulpit: People must cease toneglect the Friday prayer, or Allah will seal their hearts andthen they will be among the negligent.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Follow the great mass for he who keeps himself away from it in fact will be thrown in Hell Fire.
....Ibn Majah transmitted something near this meaning, from Anas ibn Malik.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Supplication is beneficial regarding things which have happened and things which have not happened, so devote yourselves to supplication, servants of Allah."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Ahmad transmitted it from Mu'adh ibn Jabal. Tirmidhi said this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, The worshipper engaged in prayer is in intimate conversation with his Lord, so he must observe what conversation he holds with Him and none of you must recite the Qur'an louder than the others.

It is narrated on the authority of Yahya ibn Ya'mar that thefirst man who discussed Qadr (Divine Decree) in Basrah was Ma'badal-Juhani. Humayd ibn AbdurRahman al-Himyari and I set out forPilgrimage or for Umrah and said: Should it so happen that wecome into contact with one of the Companions of the Messenger ofAllah (peace be upon him) we shall ask him about what is talkedabout Taqdir (Division Decree). Accidentally we came acrossAbdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, while he was entering themosque. My companion and I surrounded him. One of us (stood) onhis right and the other stood on his left. I expected that mycompanion would authorize me to speak.I therefore said:AbuAbdurRahman! There have appeared some people in our land whorecite the Holy Qur'an and pursue knowledge. And then aftertalking about their affairs, added: They (such people) claim thatthere is no such thing as Divine Decree and events are notpredestined. He (Abdullah ibn Umar) said: When you happen tomeet such people tell them that I have nothing to do with themand they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in noway responsible for my (belief). Abdullah ibn Umar swore by Him(the Lord) (and said): If any one of them (who does not believein the Divine Decree) had with him gold equal to the bulk of (themountain) Uhud and then, it (in the way of Allah), Allah wouldnot accept it unless he affirmed his faith in Divine Decree. Hefurther said: My father, Umar ibn al-Khattab, told me: One day wewere sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle (peace be uponhim) when there appeared before us a man dressed in pure whiteclothes, his hair extraordinarily black. There were no signs oftravel on him. None amongst us recognized him. At last he satwith the Apostle (peace be upon him) He knelt before him placedhis palms on his thighs and said: Muhammad, inform me aboutal-Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:Al-Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allahand that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establishprayer, pay Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan, and performpilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough (to bear theexpense of) the journey. He (the inquirer) said: You have toldthe truth. He (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said: It amazed us that hewould put the question and then he would himself verify thetruth. He (the inquirer) said: Inform me about Iman (faith). He(the Holy Prophet) replied: That you affirm your faith in Allah,in His angels, in His Books, in His Apostles, in the Day ofJudgment, and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree aboutgood and evil. He (the inquirer) said: You have told the truth.He (the inquirer) again said: Inform me about al-Ihsan(performance of good deeds). He (the Holy Prophet) said: That youworship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for though you don't seeHim, He, verily, sees you. He (the enquirer) again said: Informme about the hour (of the Doom). He (the Holy Prophet) remarked:One who is asked knows no more than the one who is inquiring(about it). He (the inquirer) said: Tell me some of itsindications. He (the Holy Prophet) said: That the slave-girl willgive birth to her mistress and master, that you will findbarefooted, destitute goat-herds vying with one another in theconstruction of magnificent buildings. He (the narrator, Umar ibnal-Khattab) said: Then he (the inquirer) went on his way but Istayed with him (the Holy Prophet) for a long while. He then,said to me: Umar, do you know who this inquirer was? I replied:Allah and His Apostle knows best. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked:He was Gabriel (the angel). He came to you in order to instructyou in matters of religion.
I was present at the gathering of Banu Salamah, and I was theyoungest of them. They (the people) said: Who will ask theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) for us about Laylat al-Qadr?That was the twenty-first of Ramadan. I went out and said thesunset prayer along with the Apostle of Allah (peace be uponhim). I then stood at the door of his house. He passed by me andsaid: Come in. I entered (the house) and dinner was brought forhim. I was prevented from taking food as it was scanty. When hefinished his dinner, he said to me: Give me my shoes. He thenstood up and I also stood up with him. He said: Perhaps you havesome business with me.I said: Yes. Some people of Banu Salamahhave sent me to you to ask you about Laylat al-Qadr. He asked:Which night: Is it tonight? I said: Twenty-second. He said:This is the very night. He then withdrew and said: Or thefollowing night, referring to the twenty-third night.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Among the most serious of major sins are attributing a partner to Allah, unfilial behaviour, and deliberate perjury. If anyone swears an oath which he is compelled to take and introduces into it as much falsehood as a gnat's wing, a spot will be put in his heart till the day of resurrection."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a gharib tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: I was shown laylatal-Qadr; then I was made to forget it, and saw that I wasprostrating in water and clay in the morning of that (night), He(the narrator) said: There was a downpour on the twenty-thirdnight and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led us inprayer, and as he went back, there was a trace of water and clayon his forehead and on his nose. He (the narrator) said: Abdullahibn Unays used to say that it was the twenty-third (night).
I said to the Apostle of Allah: I have a place in the desertwhere I live and in which I pray, with the praise of Allah; butgive me command about a night when I come to this mosque. Hereplied: Come on the twenty third night. I (a sub-narrator,Muhammad ibn Ibrahim) said to his (Abdullah ibn Unays's) son: Howwould your father act? He replied: He used to enter the mosquewhen he had offered the afternoon prayer, and did not leave itfor any purpose till he prayed the morning prayer. Then when hehad prayed the morning prayer, he found his riding beast at thedoor of the mosque, mounted it and got back to his desert.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) recited in the sunset prayer Ha-Min ad-Dukhan (44).
Nasa'i reported it as mursal.
AbuIshaq said: Al-Harith left his will that Abdullah ibn Yazidshould offer his funeral prayer; so he prayed over him. He thenput him in the grave from the side of his legs and said: This isa Sunnah (model practice of the Prophet).
Abdullah told on the authority of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) that he used to say in his supplication, "O Allah, provide me with Thy love and the love of those whose love will benefit me with thee. O Allah, make the things I love with which Thou hast provided me a strength to me regarding what Thou lovest. O Allah, make the things I love which Thou hast turned away from me a means of my devoting myself to what Thou lovest."
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
