The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whatever is cut off of ananimal when it is alive is dead.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) saying to hiswives during the Farewell Pilgrimage: This (is the pilgrimage foryou); afterwards stick to the surface of the mats (i.e. shouldstay at home).
A man said, "Messenger of Allah, we live in a land where we are afflicted by hunger, so when may we eat animals which have died a natural death?" He replied, "As long as you do not have a morning drink or an evening drink or gather vegetables you may eat them," meaning that when you do not find a morning drink or an evening drink, or find a vegetable to eat, animals which have died a natural death are allowable to you.

When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) went out to the battle of Hunayn he passed a tree called Dhat Anwat belonging to the polytheists, on which they hung their weapons. The people asked him to appoint a Dhat Anwat for them just as those people had one, to which Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) replied, "Glory be to Allah! This is like what the people of Moses said when they asked him to appoint them a god just as other people had gods. By Him in Whose hand my soul is, you will certainly follow the practices of your predecessors."

Umar ibn al-Khattab asked AbuWaqid al-Laythi what the Messengerof Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite on 'Id al-Adha and'Id al-Fitr. He said: He used to recite in them: "Qaf. By theglorious Qur'an (Surah 50), "The Hour drew near, and the moon wasrent asunder" (Surah 54).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A wise person is one who keeps a watch over his bodily desires and passions, and checks himself from that which is harmful and strives for that which will benefit him after death; and a foolish person is one who subordinates himself to his cravings and desires and expects from Allah the fulfilment of his futile desires.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who spends in the cause of Allah has his reward seven hundred times.

Abdullah heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: O people! Spread the Salam (greetings), feed (the poor and needy), behave kindly to your blood relations, offer prayer when others are asleep, and (thus) enter Paradise in peace.

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) led us in the dawn prayer andthen mounted the pulpit and addressed us until it was (time forthe) noon prayer. He then came down the pulpit and observedprayer and then again mounted the pulpit and again addressed usuntil it was time for the Asr prayer. He then again came down andobserved the prayer and again mounted the pulpit and addressed usuntil the sun was set and he informed (about) everything(pertaining to turmoil) that lay hidden in the past and what liesin (the womb of) the future and the most learned amongst us isone who remembers them well amongst us.
AbuMisbah al-Muqra'i said: We used to sit in the company ofAbuZuhayr an-Numayri. He was a companion of the Prophet (peace beupon him), and he used to narrate good traditions. Once a manfrom among us made a supplication. He said: End it with theutterance of Amin, for Amin is like a seal on the book. AbuZuhayr said: I shall tell you about that. We went out with theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him) one night and came upon aman who made supplication with persistence. The Prophet (peace beupon him) waited to hear him. The Prophet (peace be upon him)said: He will have done something which guarantees (Paradise forhim) if he puts a seal to it. One of the people asked: Whatshould he use as a seal? He replied: Amin, for if he ends itwith Amin, he will do something which guarantees (Paradise forhim). Then the man who questioned the Prophet (peace be uponhim) came to the man who was supplicating, and said to him:So-and-so, end it with Amin and receive the good news. These arethe words of Mahmud.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah has sent down boththe disease and the cure, and He has appointed a cure for everydisease, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Invoke many blessings on me on Friday for it is witnessed. The angels are present on it, and no one will invoke a blessing on me without his blessing being submitted to me till he stops." I asked whether that applied also after his death, and he replied, "Allah has prohibited the Earth from consuming the bodies of the prophets; so Allah's prophet is alive and given provision."

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: One of the supplications of David was: Allah, I beg of Thee Thy love and the love of those who love Thee, and such conduct as should lead me to Thy love. Allah, make Thy love dearer to me than my soul and my family and dearer than cold water.

Umm ad-Darda' said she heard AbudDarda' say he heard AbulQasim (peace be upon him) say that Allah, who is Blessed and Exalted, said, "I am sending after your time, Jesus, a people who will praise Allah when that which they like happens to them, and seek their reward from Allah and show endurance when that which they dislike afflicts them, though they do not possess forbearance and intelligence." He asked, "My Lord, how can this be when they do not possess forbearance or intelligence?" Allah replied, "I shall give them some of my forbearance and my knowledge."
Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was delivering a discourse on the pulpit and he said, "He who fears standing before his Lord will have two Paradises." He (AbudDarda) asked, "Even if he commits fornication and even if he steals, Messenger of Allah?" But he said a second time, "He who fears standing before his Lord will have two Paradises." He asked a second time, "Even if he commits fornication and even if he steals, Messenger of Allah?" And he said a third time, "He who fears standing before his Lord will have two paradises." He asked a third time, "Even if he commits fornication and even if he steals, Messenger of Allah?" to which he replied, "Even in spite of AbudDarda.'"
Ahmad transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said that part of David's supplication was that he would say, "O Allah, I ask Thee for Thy love, the love of those who love Thee, and deeds which will cause me to attain Thy love. O Allah, make Thy love dearer to me than myself, my property, my family, and than cold water." He (AbudDarda) said that when Allah's Messenger mentioned David and talked about him, he would say that he was the most devoted of men to worship.
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan gharib tradition.
When a man came to him and said, "I have a wife whom my mother commands me to divorce," he replied to him that he had heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "A parent is the best of the gates of Paradise; so if you wish, keep to the gate, or lose it."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) stood up (to pray) and weheard him say: "I seek refuge in Allah." Then he said: "I cursethee with Allah's curse" three times, then he stretched out hishand as though he were taking hold of something. When hefinished the prayer, we said: Messenger of Allah, we heard yousay something during the prayer, which we have not heard you saybefore, and we saw you stretch out your hand. He replied:Allah's enemy, Iblis, came with a flame of fire to put it in myface, so I said three times: "I seek refuge in Allah from thee."Then I said three times: "I curse thee with Allah's full curse."But he did not retreat on (any one of these) three occasions.Thereafter I meant to seize him. I swear by Allah that had it notbeen for the supplication of my brother, Sulayman, he would havebeen bound and made an object of sport for the children ofMedina.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) stood up (to pray) and weheard him say: "I seek refuge in Allah" Then said: "I curse theewith Allah's curse" three times, then he stretched out his handas though he was taking hold of something. When he finished theprayer, we said: Messenger of Allah, we heard you say somethingduring the prayer which we have not heard you say before, and wesaw you stretch out your hand. He replied: Allah's enemy Ibliscame with a flame of fire to put it in my face, so I said threetimes: "I seek refuge in Allah from thee." Then I said threetimes: "I curse thee with Allah's full curse." But he did notretreat (on any one of these) three occasions.Thereafter Imeant to seize him. I swear by Allah that had it not been for thesupplication of my brother Sulayman he would have been bound, andmade an object of sport for the children of Medina.
AbuMurrah, the freed slave of Umm Hani, narrated on the authorityof AbudDarda: My Friend (peace be upon him) instructed me inthree (acts), and I would never abandon them as long as I live.(And these three things are): Three fasts during every month, theforenoon prayer, and this that I should not sleep till I haveobserved the Witr prayer.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: If anyone learns byheart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will beprotected from the Dajjal.
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Is any one of youincapable of reciting a third of the Qur'an in a night? They (theCompanions) asked: How could one recite a third of the Qur'an (ina night)? Upon this he (the Prophet) said: "He is Allah, One"(Qur'an, 112) is equivalent to a third of the Qur'an.
When it was night AbdulMalik got up and called for the servant.It seemed as if he (the servant) was late (in responding to hiscall), so he (AbdulMalik) invoked curse upon him, and when it wasmorning Umm Darda' said to him: I heard you cursing your servantduring the night when you called him, and she said: I heardAbudDarda' as saying that Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him)said: The invoker of curse would neither be intercessor norwitness on the Day of Resurrection.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There is no believingservant who supplicates for his brother behind his back (in hisabsence) that the Angels do not say: The same be for you too.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted said: Son of Adam, if you perform four rak'ahs for me at the beginning of the day, I shall supply what you need till the end of it.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: If anyone takes land by(paying) its jizyah, he renounces his immigration; and if anyonetakes off the disgrace of an unbeliever from his neck he turnsaway his back from Islam. He (the narrator) said: ThereafterKhalid ibn Ma'dan heard this tradition from me, and he said: HasShubayb narrated it to you? I said: Yes. He said! When you cometo him, ask him to write this tradition to me. He said: He thenwrote it for him. When I came, Khalid ibn Ma'dan asked me for thepaper and I gave it to him. When he read (the paper), heabandoned the lands he had in his possession the moment he heardthis.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Seek for meweak persons, for you are provided means of subsistence andhelped through your weaklings.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The intercession of amartyr will be accepted for seventy members of his family.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If thereare three men in a village or in the desert among whom prayer isnot offered (in congregation), the devil has got the mastery overthem. So observe (prayer) in congregation), for the wolf eatsonly the straggling animal. Sa'ib said: By the word Jama'ah hemeant saying prayer in company or in congregation.
Kathir ibn Qays said: I was sitting with AbudDarda' in the mosqueof Damascus. A man came to him and said: AbudDarda, I have cometo you from the town of the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him)for a tradition that I have heard you relate from the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). I have come for no other purpose. Hesaid: I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Ifanyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will causehim to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angels willlower their wings in their great pleasure with one who seeksknowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the Earth and thefish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man.The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like thatof the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of thestars. The learned are the heirs of the Prophets, and theProphets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving only knowledge,and he who takes it takes an abundant portion.
I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If any ofyou is suffering from anything or his brother is suffering, heshould say: Our Lord is Allah Who is in the heaven, holy is Thyname, Thy command reigns supreme in the heaven and the earth, asThy mercy in the heaven, make Thy mercy in the earth; forgive usour sins, and our errors; Thou art the Lord of good men; senddown mercy from Thy mercy, and remedy, and remedy from Thy remedyon this pain so that it is healed up.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: the similitude of a man whoemancipates a slave at the time of his death is like that of aman who gives a present after satisfying his appetite.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The place of assembly ofthe Muslims at the time of the war will be in al-Ghutah near acity called Damascus, one of the best cities in Syria.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: There is nothing heavierthan good character put in the scale of a believer on the Day ofResurrection.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) would sit and we wouldalso sit around him. If he got up intending to return, he wouldtake off his sandals or something he was wearing, and hisCompanions recognising his purpose (that he would return) wouldstay where they were.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you ofsomething more excellent in degree than fasting, prayer andalmsgiving (sadaqah)? The people replied: Yes, Prophet of Allah!He said: It is putting things right between people, spoiling themis the shaver (destructive).
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrectionyou will be called by your names and by your father's names, sogive yourselves good names.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Your love for a thingcauses blindness and deafness.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, has ordained for every servant amongst His creation five things: his death, his action, his abode, the places of his moving about and his means of sustenance.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Allah created Adam when He had to create him and He struck his right shoulder and there emitted from it white offspring as if they were white ants. He struck his left shoulder and there emitted from it the black offspring as if they were charcoal. He then said (to those who had been emitted) from the right (shoulder): For Paradise and I do not mind. Then He said to those (who had been emitted) from his left shoulder: They are for Hell and I do not mind.

While we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and discussing what would come to pass, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) remarked: If you hear that the mountain has deviated from its place you may confirm it but if you hear of a person that his inborn disposition has changed, don't attest it. For a man always adheres to his inborn disposition.

We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) when he fixed his gaze on the sky and said: The time is come when knowledge will be taken from the people, as they will be unable to acquire it.

The worst of men in the eye of Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be the scholar who does not derive benefit from his knowledge.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: I shall be the first to be permitted to fall in prostration on the Day of Resurrection and I shall be the first to whom permission will be given to raise his head. I shall then look in front of me, and recognize my Ummah amongst the other Ummahs; I shall do the same behind me, on my right hand and on my left. Someone said: Allah's Messenger, how will you recognize your Ummah among the peoples from Noah's time onwards? He said: They (the people of Ummah) will have white faces, arms and legs because of the traces of ablution and none beside them will be like them. I shall recognize them because they will be given their scrolls in their right hand and I shall recognize them with their posterity (going) before them.

A man came to him and said: I have a wife and my mother asks me to divorce her. AbudDarda' said to him that he had heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: A father is one of the strongest doors of Paradise, If you wish you may pull it down, or if you wish you may protect it.

My friend (the Prophet) instructed me: Don't associate anything with Allah even though you are cut into pieces and burnt and don't abandon the obligatory prayer intentionally, for he who abandon the obligatory prayer intentionally protection (guaranteed to him) because of his being a Muslim will be withdrawn (from him) and don't drink wine for it is the key to every evil.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Nothing is weightier in the scales of a believer on the Day of Judgment than his good behaviour. Allah treats with displeasure a person who is given to loose and vulgar talk.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Shall I tell you what is your best action, the purest in the estimation of kings, that which raises your rank to the highest, that which is better for you than spending gold and silver, and that which is better for you than that you should encounter the enemy to cut off their necks, they cutting off yours? Tell us indeed, they answered. He said: It is the remembrance of Allah, the Exalted.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: He who defends the honour of a brother, Allah will shield his face against the Fire on the Day of Judgment.

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "One who gives sadaqah or who frees a slave at the time of his death is like one who gives gifts when he has more than enough."
Ahmad, Nasa'i, Darimi and Tirmidhi transmitted it, and Tirmidhi said it is sahih tradition.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "He who recites three verses at the beginning of al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of the Dajjal."
Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying this is a hasan sahih tradition.
AbudDarda heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) say, "No one will suffer any bodily injury and forgive it without Allah raising him a degree for it and removing a sin from him."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) forbade eating the mujaththamah, which is the animal kept as a target for arrows.
Tirmidhi transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The best thing in which to visit Allah in your graves and in your mosques in white."
Ibn Majah transmitted it.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Hunger will be cast upon the inhabitants of Hell and will be equal to the punishment they are experiencing. They will cry for help and will be helped with food of dari' which neither fattens nor satisfies hunger. They will then call for food and will be fed with food which chokes. So remembering that they helped down choking food with drink when they were in the world they will ask for drink and the scalding drink will be presented to them on iron flesh-hooks. When these approach their faces they will scorch their faces, and then they enter their bellies they will cut in pieces the contents of their bellies. They will then ask the guards of Jahannam to be called who will say, 'Did your messengers not bring you the clear signs?' and when they reply, 'Yes,' they will say, 'Then make supplication, but the supplication of the infidels is only in error.' They will then ask Malik to be called and will say, 'O Malik, would that your Lord might put an end to us!' He will reply to them, 'You are remaining' (al-A'mash saying he had been informed that the period between their appeal and Malik's reply to them would be a thousand years). They will then say, "Call your Lord, for no one is better than your Lord,' and they will say, 'O our Lord, our adversity was too much for us and we were a people who went astray. O our Lord, bring us out of it; then if we return to evil we shall indeed be wrongdoers.' He will then answer them, 'Retreat into it in shame and do not speak to me.' They will then despair of all good and will begin to sigh, grieve and bemoan themselves." Abdullah ibn AbdurRahman said that people do not trace this tradition back to the Prophet.

AbudDarda' related from the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him)that he came upon a (slave) woman who was in the advanced stageof pregnancy at the door of a tent. He (the Prophet) said:Perhaps he (the man accompanying her) intends to cohabit withher. They said: Yes. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) said: I had decided to curse him with such a curse as may goalong with him to his grave. How can he own him (the child to beborn) and that is not lawful for him, and how can be take him asa servant for that is not lawful for him?
Safwan (and he was Ibn Abdullah b. Safwan, and he had beenmarried to Umm Darda') reported: I visited AbudDarda's house inSyria. I did not find him there but Umm Darda (was present at thehouse). She said: Do you intend to perform Hajj during this year?I said: Yes. She Said: Do supplicate Allah for blessing upon us,for Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) used to say: Thesupplication of a Muslim for his brother at his back (in hisabsence) is responded so long as he makes a supplication forblessings for his brother and the commissioned Angel says: Amen,and says: May it be for you too! I went to the bazar and metAbudDarda and he narrated like this from Allah's Apostle (peacebe upon him).
Khalid ibn Dihqan said: When we were engaged in the battle ofConstantinople at Dhuluqiyyah, a man of the people of Palestine,who was one of their nobility and elite and whose rank was knownto them, came forward. He was called Hani ibn Kulthum ibn Sharikal-Kinani. He greeted Abdullah ibn Zakariyya who knew his rank. Khalid said to us: Abdullah ibn AbuZakariyya told us: I heard Ummad-Darda' say: I heard AbudDarda' say: I heard the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) say: It is hoped that Allah may forgiveevery sin, except in the case of one who dies a polytheist, orone who purposely kills a believer. Hani ibn Kulthum ar-Rabi'then said: I heard Mahmud ibn ar-Rabi' transmitting a traditionfrom Ubadah ibn as-Samit who transmitted from the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him) who said: If a man kills a believerunjustly, Allah will not accept any action or duty of his,obligatory or supererogatory. Khalid then said to us: IbnAbuZakariyya transmitted a tradition to us from Umm ad-Darda' onthe authority of AbudDarda' from the Apostle of Allah (peace beupon him) who said: A believer will continue to go on quickly andwell so long as he does not shed unlawful blood; when he shedsunlawful blood, he becomes slow and heavy-footed. A similartradition has been transmitted by Hani ibn Kulthum from Mahmudibn ar-Rabi' on the authority of Ubadah ibn as-Samit from theApostle of Allah (peace be upon him).
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "The sun does not rise without having on either side of it two angels who call out and cause all creatures but men and jinn to hear, 'O people, come to your Lord. What is little and sufficient is better than what is abundant and causes negligence.'"
AbuNu'aym transmitted this tradition in al-Hilyah.
I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) wearing a poor garmentand he said (to me): Have you any property? He replied: Yes. Heasked: What kind is it? He said: Allah has given me camels.Sheep, horses and slaves. He then said: When Allah gives youproperty, let the mark of Allah's favour and honour to you beseen.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) abrogated some of hiscommands by others, just as the Qur'an abrogates some part withthe others.
When the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) went to his bed atnight, he would say: in the name of Allah, I have laid down myside for Allah. O Allah! forgive me my sin, drive away my devil,free me from my responsibility, and place me in the highestassembly.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah does not acceptcharity from goods acquired by embezzlement as He does not acceptprayer without purification.
The Prophet disapproved (the transaction and as a result of that) paying for the skins of beasts of prey.
Transmitted by Tirmidhi in his Jami' under the head 'dress' and the chain of transmission is sound.
AbulUshara' reported on the authority of his father: He asked:Apostle of Allah, is the slaughtering to be done only in theupper part of the breast and the throat? The Apostle of Allah(peace be upon him) replied: If you pierced its thigh, it wouldserve you.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: "OAllah, I seek refuge in Thee from my house falling on me, I seekrefuge in Thee from falling into an abyss, I seek refuge in Theefrom drowning burning and decrepitude. I seek refuge in Thee fromthe devil harming me at the time of my death, I seek refuge inThee from dying in Thy path while retreating, and I seek refugein Thee from dying of the sting of a poisonous creature."
Ubadah ibn al-Walid ibn Ubadah ibn as-Samit said: My father and Iset out in search of knowledge to a tribe of the Ansar beforetheir death (i.e. before the companions of the Holy Prophet leftthe world) and I was the first to meet AbuYasar, a companion ofAllah's Apostle (peace be upon him). There was a young man withhim, who carried the record of letter with him, and he wore amantle prepared by the tribe of Ma'afiri. His servant too were aMa'afiri mantle. My father said to him: My uncle, I see the signsof anger or agony on your face. He said: Yes, a certain person,the son of so and so, of the tribe of Harami was in debt to me, Iwent to his family, greeted them and said: Where is he? Theysaid: He is not here. Then there came out to me his son who wason the threshold of youth. I said to him: Where is your father? He said: No sooner did he hear your arrival than he hid himselfbehind my mother's bed. I said to him: come out to me, for Iknow where you are. He came out. I said to him: What promptedyou to hide yourself from me? He said: By Allah, whatever I sayto you will not be a lie. By Allah, I fear lest I should tell alie to you and in the case of making promise you I should breakit, as you are the companion of Allah's Apostle (peace be uponhim). The fact is that I was hard up in regard to money. I said:Do you adjure by Allah? He said: I adjure by Allah. I said: Doyou adjure by Allah? He said: I adjure by Allah. I said: Do youadjure by Allah? He said: I adjure by Allah. Then he brought hispromissory note and he wrote off (the debt) with his hand andsaid: Make payment when you find yourself solvent enough to payme back; if you are not, then there is no liability upon you. Sawwith my own eyes he (AbulYasar) placed his fingers upon his eyes,I heard with my own ears and it was lodged in my heart, hepointed towards his heart, that Allah's Apostle (peace be uponhim) said: He who gives time to one who is financially hard up(in the payment of debt) or writes off his debt, Allah willprovide him with His shadow. I said to him: My uncle, if you takethe cloak of your servant and you give him your two garments, ortake his two garments of Ma'afir and give him your cloak, thenthere will be one dress for you and one for him. He patched myhead and said; O Allah, bless the son of my brother. O son of mybrother, I saw with my very eyes, I heard with my very ears andit was lodged in this heart of mine, and he pointed towards hisheart, that Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: Feed them(the servants) with and clothe them (the servants) with what youwear. If I give him the goods of the world, it is easier for methan that he should take my virtues on the Day of Resurrection.We went on until we came to Jabir ibn Abdullah.
