The Prophet said, "None of you should say Khabuthat Nafsi but he is recommended to say 'Laqisat Nafsi." (See Hadith No. 202)
I heard the Prophet saying, "Whoever (intentionally) ascribes to me what I have not said then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire."
The distance between the wall of the mosque and the pulpit was hardly enough for a sheep to pass through.
We used to pray the Maghrib prayer with the Prophet when the sun disappeared from the horizon.
the above narration (Hadith 616) from Ubai bin Ka'b: adding, "I met the sub-narrator at Mecca later on, but he did not remember whether Ka'b had announced what he had found one year or three years."
Once the journey food diminished and the people were reduced to poverty. They went to the Prophet and asked his permission to slaughter their camels, and he agreed. 'Umar met them and they told him about it, and he said, "How would you survive after slaughtering your camels?" Then he went to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! How would they survive after slaughtering their camels?" Allah's Apostle ordered 'Umar, "Call upon the people to bring what has remained of their food." A leather sheet was spread and all the journey food was collected and heaped over it. Allah's Apostle stood up and invoked Allah to bless it, and then directed all the people to come with their utensils, and they started taking from it till all of them got what was sufficient for them. Allah's Apostle then said, "I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I am His Apostle."
Once the journey-food of the people ran short and they were in great need. So, they came to the Prophet to take his permission for slaughtering their camels, and he permitted them. Then Umar met them and they informed him about it. He said, "What will sustain you after your camels (are finished)?" Then Umar went to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! What will sustain them after their camels (are finished)?" Allah's Apostle said, "Make an announcement amongst the people that they should bring all their remaining food (to me)." (They brought it and) the Prophet invoked Allah and asked for His Blessings for it. Then he asked them to bring their food utensils and the people started filling their food utensils with their hands till they were satisfied. Allah's Apostle then said, "I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I am His Apostle. "
I went out of Medina towards Al-Ghaba. When I reached the mountain path of Al-Ghaba, a slave of Abdur-Rahman bin Auf met me. I said to him, "Woe to you! What brought you here?" He replied, "The she-camels of the Prophet have been taken away." I said, "Who took them?" He said, "Ghatafan and Fazara." So, I sent three cries, "O Sabahah! O Sabahah !" so loudly that made the people in between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains hear me. Then I rushed till I met them after they had taken the camels away. I started throwing arrows at them saying, "I am the son of Al-Akwa, and today perish the mean people!" So, I saved the she-camels from them before they (i.e. the robbers) could drink water. When I returned driving the camels, the Prophet met me, I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Those people are thirsty and I have prevented them from drinking water, so send some people to chase them." The Prophet said, "O son of Al-Akwa', you have gained power (over your enemy), so forgive (them). (Besides) those people are now being entertained by their folk."
Allah's Apostle passed by some people from the tribe of Aslam practicing archery. He said, "O children of Ishmael! Throw (arrows), for your father was an archer. I am on the side of Bani so-and-so," meaning one of the two teams. The other team stopped throwing, whereupon the Prophet said, "What has happened to them?" They replied, "How shall we throw while you are with Bani so-and-so?" He said, "Throw for I am with all of you."
Ali happened to stay behind the Prophet and (did not join him) during the battle of Khaibar for he was having eye trouble. Then he said, "How could I remain behind Allah's Apostle?" So 'Ali set out following the Prophet , When it was the eve of the day in the morning of which Allah helped (the Muslims) to conquer it, Allah's Apostle said, "I will give the flag (to a man), or tomorrow a man whom Allah and His Apostle love will take the flag," or said, "A man who loves Allah and His Apostle; and Allah will grant victory under his leadership." Suddenly came 'Ali whom we did not expect. The people said, "This is 'Ali." Allah's Apostle gave him the flag and Allah granted victory under his leadership.
Ali remained behind the Prophet during the Ghazwa of Khaibar as he was suffering from eye trouble. He then said, "(How can) I remain behind the Prophet," and followed him. So when he slept on the night of the Conquest of Khaibar, the Prophet said, "I will give the flag tomorrow, or tomorrow the flag will be taken by a man who is loved by Allah and His Apostle , and (Khaibar) will be conquered through him, (with Allah's help)" While every one of us was hopeful to have the flag, it was said, "Here is 'Ali" and the Prophet gave him the flag and Khaibar was conquered through him (with Allah's Help).
When the Divine Revelation:
"For those who can fast, they had a choice either fast, or feed a poor for every day," (2.184) was revealed, it was permissible for one to give a ransom and give up fasting, till the Verse succeeding it was revealed and abrogated it.
We went out with the Prophet to Khaibar. A man (from the companions) said, "O 'Amir! Let us hear some of your Huda (camel-driving songs.)" So he sang some of them (i.e. a lyric in harmony with the camels walk). The Prophet said, "Who is the driver (of these camels)?" They said, "Amir." The Prophet said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him!" The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Would that you let us enjoy his company longer!" Then 'Amir was killed the following morning. The people said, "The good deeds of 'Amir are lost as he has killed himself." I returned at the time while they were talking about that. I went to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Prophet! Let my father be sacrificed for you! The people claim that 'Amir's good deeds are lost." The Prophet said, "Whoever says so is a liar, for 'Amir will have a double reward as he exerted himself to obey Allah and fought in Allah's Cause. No other way of killing would have granted him greater reward."
We gave the oath of allegiance to the Prophet under the tree. He said to me, "O Salama! Will you not give the oath of allegiance?" I replied, "O Allah's Apostle! I have already given the oath of allegiance for the first time." He said, ("Give it again) for the second time."
Once the Prophet ordered a person on 'Ashura' (the tenth of Muharram) to announce, "Whoever has eaten, should not eat any more, but fast, and who has not eaten should not eat, but complete his fast (till the end of the day)."
The Prophet ordered a man from the tribe of Bani Aslam to announce amongst the people that whoever had eaten should fast the rest of the day, and whoever had not eaten should continue his fast, as that day was the day of 'Ashura' .
Once, while we were sitting in the company of Prophet, a dead man was brought. The Prophet was requested to lead the funeral prayer for the deceased. He said, "Is he in debt?" The people replied in the negative. He said, "Has he left any wealth?" They said, "No." So, he led his funeral prayer. Another dead man was brought and the people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Lead his funeral prayer." The Prophet said, "Is he in debt?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Has he left any wealth?" They said, ''Three Dinars." So, he led the prayer. Then a third dead man was brought and the people said (to the Prophet ), Please lead his funeral prayer." He said, "Has he left any wealth?" They said, "No." He asked, "Is he in debt?" They said, ("Yes! He has to pay) three Diners.', He (refused to pray and) said, "Then pray for your (dead) companion." Abu Qatada said, "O Allah's Apostle! Lead his funeral prayer, and I will pay his debt." So, he led the prayer.
The Prophet said, "An Israeli man asked another Israeli to lend him one thousand Dinars. The second man required witnesses. The former replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a witness.' The second said, 'I want a surety.' The former replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a surety.' The second said, 'You are right,' and lent him the money for a certain period. The debtor went across the sea. When he finished his job, he searched for a conveyance so that he might reach in time for the repayment of the debt, but he could not find any. So, he took a piece of wood and made a hole in it, inserted in it one thousand Dinars and a letter to the lender and then closed (i.e. sealed) the hole tightly. He took the piece of wood to the sea and said. 'O Allah! You know well that I took a loan of one thousand Dinars from so-and-so. He demanded a surety from me but I told him that Allah's guarantee was sufficient and he accepted Your guarantee. He then asked for a witness and I told him that Allah was sufficient as a witness, and he accepted You as a witness. No doubt, I tried hard to find a conveyance so that I could pay his money but could not find, so I hand over this money to You.' Saying that, he threw the piece of wood into the sea till it went out far into it, and then he went away. Meanwhile he started searching for a conveyance in order to reach the creditor's country.
One day the lender came out of his house to see whether a ship had arrived bringing his money, and all of a sudden he saw the piece of wood in which his money had been deposited. He took it home to use for fire. When he sawed it, he found his money and the letter inside it. Shortly after that, the debtor came bringing one thousand Dinars to him and said, 'By Allah, I had been trying hard to get a boat so that I could bring you your money, but failed to get one before the one I have come by.' The lender asked, 'Have you sent something to me?' The debtor replied, 'I have told you I could not get a boat other than the one I have come by.' The lender said, 'Allah has delivered on your behalf the money you sent in the piece of wood. So, you may keep your one thousand Dinars and depart guided on the right path.' "
A dead person was brought to the Prophet so that he might lead the funeral prayer for him. He asked, "Is he in debt?" When the people replied in the negative, he led the funeral prayer. Another dead person was brought and he asked, "Is he in debt?" They said, "Yes." He (refused to lead the prayer and) said, "Lead the prayer of your friend." Abu Qatada said, "O Allah's Apostle! I undertake to pay his debt." Allah's Apostle then led his funeral prayer.
On the day of Khaibar the Prophet saw fires being lighted. He asked, "Why are these fires being lighted?" The people replied that they were cooking the meat of donkeys. He said, "Break the pots and throw away their contents." The people said, "Shall we throw away their contents and wash the pots (rather than break them)?" He said, "Wash them."
The Prophet passed by some people of the tribe of Bani Aslam who were practicing archery. The Prophet said, "O Bani Ismail ! Practice archery as your father Isma'il was a great archer. Keep on throwing arrows and I am with Bani so-and-so." So one of the parties ceased throwing. Allah's Apostle said, "Why do you not throw?" They replied, "How should we throw while you are with them (i.e. on their side)?" On that the Prophet said, "Throw, and I am with all of you."
Ali remained behind the Prophet during the battle of Khaibar as he was suffering from some eye trouble but then he said, "How should I stay behind Allah's Apostle?" So, he set out till he joined the Prophet. On the eve of the day of the conquest of Khaibar, Allah's Apostle said, "(No doubt) I will give the flag or, tomorrow, a man whom Allah and His Apostle love or who loves Allah and His apostle will take the flag. Allah will bestow victory upon him." Suddenly Ali joined us though we were not expecting him. The people said, "Here is Ali." So, Allah's Apostle gave the flag to him and Allah bestowed victory upon him.
I heard Al Abbas telling Az-Zubair, "The Prophet ordered you to fix the flag here."
"An infidel spy came to the Prophet while he was on a journey. The spy sat with the companions of the Prophet and started talking and then went away. The Prophet said (to his companions), 'Chase and kill him.' So, I killed him." The Prophet then gave him the belongings of the killed spy (in addition to his share of the war booty).
The Prophet passed by some persons of the tribe of Aslam practicing archery (i.e. the throwing of arrows). Allah's Apostle said, "O offspring of Ishmael! Practice archery (i.e. arrow throwing) as your father was a great archer (i.e. arrow-thrower). I am with (on the side of) the son of so-and-so." Hearing that, one of the two teams stopped throwing. Allah's Apostle asked them, "Why are you not throwing?" They replied, "O Allah's Apostle! How shall we throw when you are with the opposite team?" He said, "Throw, for I am with you all."
Once I went (from Medina) towards (Al-Ghaba) before the first Adhan of the Fajr Prayer. The she-camels of Allah's Apostle used to graze at a place called Dhi-Qarad. A slave of 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Auf met me (on the way) and said, "The she-camels of Allah's Apostle had been taken away by force." I asked, "Who had taken them?" He replied "(The people of) Ghatafan." I made three loud cries (to the people of Medina) saying, "O Sabahah!" I made the people between the two mountains of Medina hear me. Then I rushed onward and caught up with the robbers while they were watering the camels. I started throwing arrows at them as I was a good archer and I was saying, "I am the son of Al-Akwa', and today will perish the wicked people." I kept on saying like that till I restored the she-camels (of the Prophet), I also snatched thirty Burda (i.e. garments) from them. Then the Prophet and the other people came there, and I said, "O Allah's Prophet! I have stopped the people (of Ghatafan) from taking water and they are thirsty now. So send (some people) after them now." On that the Prophet said, "O the son of Al-Akwa'! You have over-powered them, so forgive them." Then we all came back and Allah's Apostle seated me behind him on his she-camel till we entered Medina.
We went out to Khaibar in the company of the Prophet. While we were proceeding at night, a man from the group said to 'Amir, "O 'Amir! Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, so he got down and started reciting for the people poetry that kept pace with the camels' footsteps, saying: "O Allah! Without You we Would not have been guided On the right path Neither would be have given In charity, nor would We have prayed. So please forgive us, what we have committed (i.e. our defects); let all of us Be sacrificed for Your Cause And send Sakina (i.e. calmness) Upon us to make our feet firm When we meet our enemy, and If they will call us towards An unjust thing, We will refuse. The infidels have made a hue and Cry to ask others' help Against us." The Prophet on that, asked, "Who is that (camel) driver (reciting poetry)?" The people said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Akwa'."
Then the Prophet said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him." A man amongst the people said, "O Allah's Prophet! has (martyrdom) been granted to him. Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." Then we reached and besieged Khaibar till we were afflicted with severe hunger. Then Allah helped the Muslims conquer it (i.e. Khaibar). In the evening of the day of the Conquest of the city, the Muslims made huge fires. The Prophet said, "What are these fires? For cooking what, are you making the fire?" The people replied, "(For cooking) meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They (i.e. people) said, "The meat of donkeys." The Prophet said, "Throw away the meat and break the pots!" Some man said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the pots instead?" He said, "(Yes, you can do) that too." So when the army files were arranged in rows (for the clash), 'Amir's sword was short and he aimed at the leg of a Jew to strike it, but the sharp blade of the sword returned to him and injured his own knee, and that Caused him to die. When they returned from the battle, Allah's Apostle saw me (in a sad mood). He took my hand and said, "What is bothering you?" I replied, "Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! The people say that the deeds of 'Amir are lost." The Prophet said, "Whoever says so, is mistaken, for 'Amir has got a double reward." The Prophet raised two fingers and added, "He (i.e. Amir) was a persevering struggler in the Cause of Allah and there are few 'Arabs who achieved the like of (good deeds) 'Amir had done."
I fought in seven Ghazwat (i.e. battles) along with the Prophet and fought in nine battles, fought by armies dispatched by the Prophet. Once Abu Bakr was our commander and at another time, Usama was our commander.
Narrated Salama in another narration: I fought seven Ghazwat (i.e. battles) along with the Prophet and also fought in nine battles, fought by armies sent by the Prophet. Once Abu Bakr was our commander and another time, Usama was (our commander).
I fought in nine Ghazwat along with the Prophet, I also fought along with Ibn Haritha when the Prophet made him our commander.
We went out with the Prophet to Khaibar. A man among the people said, "O 'Amir! Will you please recite to us some of your poetic verses?" So 'Amir got down and started chanting among them, saying, "By Allah! Had it not been for Allah, we would not have been guided." 'Amir also said other poetic verses which I do not remember. Allah's Apostle said, "Who is this (camel) driver?" The people said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Akwa'." He said, "May Allah bestow His Mercy on him." A man from the People said, "O Allah's Apostle! Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." When the people (Muslims) lined up, the battle started, and 'Amir was struck with his own sword (by chance) by himself and died. In the evening, the people made a large number of fires (for cooking meals). Allah's Apostle said, "What is this fire? What are you making the fire for?" They said, "For cooking the meat of donkeys." He said, "Throw away what is in the pots and break the pots!" A man said, "O Allah's Prophet! May we throw away what is in them and wash them?" He said, "Never mind, you may do so." (See Hadith No. 509, Vol. 5).
That he visited Al-Hajjaj (bin Yusuf). Al-Hajjaj said, "O son of Al-Akwa! You have turned on your heels (i.e., deserted Islam) by staying (in the desert) with the bedouins." Salama replied, "No, but Allah's Apostle allowed me to stay with the bedouin in the desert." Narrated Yazid bin Abi Ubaid: When 'Uthman bin Affan was killed (martyred), Salama bin Al-Akwa' went out to a place called Ar-Rabadha and married there and begot children, and he stayed there till a few nights before his death when he came to Medina.
Allah's Apostle said to a man from the tribe of Al-Aslam, "Proclaim among your people (or the people) on the day of 'Ashura' (tenth of Muharram), 'Whosoever has eaten anything should fast for the rest of the day; and whoever has not eaten anything, should complete his fast.' "
The Prophet said, "Whoever has slaughtered a sacrifice should not keep anything of its meat after three days." When it was the next year the people said, "O Allah's Apostle! Shall we do as we did last year?" He said, -Eat of it and feed of it to others and store of it for in that year the people were having a hard time and I wanted you to help (the needy)."
In the evening of the day of the conquest of Khaibar, the army made fires (for cooking). The Prophet said, "For what have you made these fires?" They said, "For cooking the meat of domestic donkeys." He said, "Throw away what is in the cooking pots and break the pots." A man from the people got up and said, "Shall we throw the contents of the cooking pots and then wash the pots (instead of breaking them)?" The Prophet said, "Yes, you can do either."
We went out with Allah's Apostle to Khaibar and we travelled during the night. A man amongst the people said to 'Amir bin Al-Aqwa', "Won't you let us hear your poetry?" 'Amir was a poet, and so he got down and started (chanting Huda) reciting for the people, poetry that keep pace with the camel's foot steps, saying, "O Allah! Without You we would not have been guided on the right path, neither would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. So please forgive us what we have committed. Let all of us be sacrificed for Your cause and when we meet our enemy, make our feet firm and bestow peace and calmness on us and if they (our enemy) will call us towards an unjust thing we will refuse.
The infidels have made a hue and cry to ask others help against us." Allah's Apostle said, "Who is that driver (of the camels)?" They said, "He is 'Amir bin Al-Aqwa." He said, "May Allah bestow His mercy on him." A man among the people said, "Has Martyrdom been granted to him, O Allah's Prophet! Would that you let us enjoy his company longer." We reached (the people of) Khaibar and besieged them till we were stricken with severe hunger but Allah helped the Muslims conquer Khaibar. In the evening of its conquest the people made many fires. Allah's Apostle asked, "What are those fires? For what are you making fires?" They said, "For cooking meat." He asked, "What kind of meat?" They said, "Donkeys' meat." Allah's Apostle said, "Throw away the meat and break the cooking pots." A man said, O Allah's Apostle! Shall we throw away the meat and wash the cooking pots?" He said, "You can do that too." When the army files aligned in rows (for the battle), 'Amir's sword was a short one, and while attacking a Jew with it in order to hit him, the sharp edge of the sword turned back and hit 'Amir's knee and caused him to die.
When the Muslims returned (from the battle), Salama said, "Allah's Apostle saw me pale and said, 'What is wrong with you?' I said, Let my parents be sacrificed for you! The people claim that all the deeds of Amir have been annulled. The Prophet asked, 'Who said so?' I replied, 'So-and-so and so-and-so,' and Usaid bin Al-Hudair Al-Ansari said, 'Whoever says so is telling a lie. Verily, 'Amir will have double reward.' " (While speaking) the Prophet put two of his fingers together to indicate that, and added, "He was really a hard-working man and a Mujahid (devout fighter in Allah's Cause) and rarely have there lived in it (i.e., Medina or the battle-field) an Arab like him."
I asked Muhammad (bin Sirin) whether Tashah-hud should be recited after the two prostrations of Sahu. He replied, "It is not (mentioned) in Abu Huraira's narration."
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A person who persistently keeps himself aloof from people and behaves insolently, so much so that his name is counted among the arrogant, he is meted out the same punishment which is earmarked for insolent persons.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said about the one who vows to make his wife like his mother's back and has intercourse with her before making atonement, "There is no atonement."
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it.
I was a man who was more given than others to sexual intercoursewith women. When the month of Ramadan came, I feared lest Ishould have intercourse with my wife, and this evil should remainwith me till the morning. So I made my wife like my mother's backto me till the end of Ramadan. But one night when she was waitingupon me, something of her was revealed. Suddenly I jumped uponher. When the morning came I went to my people and informed themabout this matter. I said: Go along with me to the Apostle ofAllah (peace be upon him). They said: No, by Allah. So I went tothe Prophet (peace be upon him and informed him of the matter. He said: Have you really committed it, Salamah? I said: Icommitted it twice, Apostle of Allah. I am content with theCommandment of Allah, the Exalted; so take a decision about meaccording to what Allah has shown you.He said: Free a slave.Isaid: By Him Who sent you with truth, I do not possess a neckother than this: and I struck the surface of my neck. He said:Then fast two consecutive months. I said: Whatever I suffered isdue to fasting. He said: Feed sixty poor people with a wasq ofdates.I said: By Him Who sent you with truth, we passed thenight hungry; there was no food in our house. He said: Then goto the collector of sadaqah of Banu Zurayq; he must give it toyou. Then feed sixty poor people with a wasq of dates; and youand your family eat the remaining dates. Then I came back to mypeople, and said (to them): I found with you poverty and badopinion; and I found with the Prophet (peace be upon him)prosperity and good opinion. He has commanded me to give alms toyou. Ibn al-Ala' added: Ibn Idris said: Bayadah is a sub-clan ofBanu Zurayq.
The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) appointed AbuBakr ourcommander and we fought with some people who were polytheists, and we attacked them at night, killing them. Our war-cry thatnight was "put to death; put to death." Salamah said: I killedthat night with my hand polytheists belonging to seven houses.
I said: Apostle of Allah, I am a man who goes out hunting; may Ipray in a single shirt? He replied: Yes, but fasten it even if itshould be with a thorn.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A man will continue to exalt himself till he is recorded among the imperious ones and is smitten as they are."

The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) observed: He who drawsthe sword against us is not of us.
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) gave sanction forcontracting temporary marriage for three nights in the year ofAwtas and then forbade it.
We set out on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim). We faced hardship (in getting provisions) until we decidedto slaughter some of our riding-animals. Allah's Apostle (peacebe upon him) commanded us to pool our provisions of food. So wespread a sheet of leather and the provisions of the people werecollected on it. I stretched myself to measure how much that was(the length and breadth of the sheet on which the provisions werelaid). I measured it and (found) that it was (in length andbreadth) of ( the size) on which a goat could sit. We werefourteen hundred people. We (all) ate until we were fullysatisfied and then filled our bags with provisions. The Allah'sApostle (peace be upon him) said: Is there any water forperforming ablution. Then there came a man with a small bucketcontaining some water. He tipped it into a basin. We all fourteenhundred persons performed ablution using the water. Then eightpeople came after that and said: Is there any water forperforming ablution? Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) said: The ablution has already been performed.
It has been reported by Salamah ibn al-Akwa': We fought theBattle of Hawazin with the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim). (One day) when we were having our breakfast with theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him), a man came riding a redcamel. He made it kneel down, extracted a strip of leather fromits girth and tethered the camel with it. Then he began to takefood with the people and look (curiously around). We were in apoor condition as some of us were on foot (being without anyriding-animals). All of a sudden, he left us hurriedly, came tohis camel, untethered it, made it kneel down, mounted it andurged the beast which cantered off. A man on a brown she-camelchased him (taking him for a spy). Salamah (the narrator) said:I followed on foot. I ran on until I was near the thigh of theshe-camel. I advanced further until I was near the haunches ofthe camel. I advanced still further until I caught hold of thenose-string of the camel. I made it kneel down. As soon as itplaced its knees on the ground, I drew my sword and struck at thehead of the rider who fell down. I brought back the camel, driving it along with the man's baggage and weapons. TheMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came forward to meet meand the people were with him. He asked: Who has killed the man? The people said: Ibn Akwa'. He said: Everything belonging to theman is for him (Ibn Akwa').
We fought against the Fazarah and AbuBakr was the commander overus. He had been appointed by the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him). When we were only an hour's ride from the water of theenemy, AbuBakr ordered us to attack. We made a halt during thelast part of the night for rest and then we attacked from allsides and reached their watering-place where a battle was fought. Some of the enemy were killed and some were taken prisoner. I sawa group of people that consisted of women and children. I wasafraid lest they should reach the mountain before me, so I shotan arrow between them and the mountain. When they saw the arrow, they stopped. So I brought them, driving them along. Among themwas a woman from Banu Fazarah. She was wearing a leather coat. With her was her daughter who was one of the prettiest girls inArabia. I drove them along until I brought them to AbuBakr whobestowed that girl upon me as a prize. So we arrived in Medina. I had not yet disrobed her when the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him) met me in the street and said: Give me that girl, OSalamah. I said: Messenger of Allah, she has fascinated me. Ihave not yet disrobed her. When on the next day, the Messengerof Allah (peace be upon him) again met me in the street, he said:O Salamah, give me that girl, may God bless your father. I said:She is for you, Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I have not yetdisrobed her. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) senther to the people of Mecca, and surrendered her as ransom for anumber of Muslims who had been kept as prisoners at Mecca.
We fought by the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) at Hunayn. When we encountered the enemy, I advanced andascended a hillock. A man from the enemy side turned towards meand I shot at him with an arrow. He (ducked and) hid himself fromme. I could not understand what he did, but (all of a sudden) Isaw that a group of people appeared from the other hillock. Theyand the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) met incombat, but the companions of the Prophet turned back and I tooturned back defeated. I had two mantles, one of which I waswrapping round the waist (covering the lower part of my body) andthe other I was putting around my shoulders. My waist-wrapper gotloose and I held the two mantles together. (In this downcastcondition) I passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)who was riding his white mule.He said: The son of Akwa' findshimself to be utterly perplexed. When the Companions gatheredround him from all sides, the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) got down from his mule, picked up a handful of dust from theground, threw it into their (enemy) faces and said: May thesefaces be deformed! There was no one among the enemy whose eyeswere not filled with the dust from this handful. So they fled inretreat, so Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, defeated them, andthe Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) distributed theirbooty among the Muslims.
We arrived at Hudaybiyyah with the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him) and we were fourteen hundred in number. There werefifty goats with us which could not be watered (by the smallquantity of water in the local well). So, the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) sat on the brink of the well. Either heprayed or spat into the well. The water welled up. We drank andwatered (the beasts as well). Then the Messenger of Allah (maypeace be upon him) called us to take the vow of allegiance, ashe was sitting at the base of a tree. I was the first man to takethe oath. Then other people took the oath. When half the numberof people had done so, he said to me: You take the oath, Salamah.I said: I was one of those who took the vow in the firstinstance. He said: (you may do) again. Then the Messenger ofAllah (peace be upon him) saw that I was without weapons. He gaveme a big or a small shield. Then he continued to administer vowsto the people until it was the last batch of them. He said (tome): Won't you swear allegiance, Salamah? I said: Messenger ofAllah, I took the oath with the first batch of the people andthen again when you were in the middle of the people. He said:(Doesn't matter), you may (do so) again. So I took the oath ofallegiance thrice. Then he said to me: Salamah, where is theshield which I gave to thee? I said: Messenger of Allah, myuncle Amir met me and he was without any weapons. So I gave theshield to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laughedand said: You are like a person of the days gone by who said: OGod, I seek a friend who is dearer to me than myself. (When allCompanions had sworn allegiance to the Holy Prophet), thepolytheists sent messages of peace, until people could move fromour camp to that of the Meccans and vice versa. Finally, thepeace treaty was concluded. I was a dependant of Talhah binUbaydullah. I watered his horse and rubbed its back. I servedTalhah (doing odd jobs for him) and partook from his food. I hadleft my family and my property as an emigrant in the cause ofAllah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). When we and thepeople of Mecca had concluded a peace treaty and the people ofone side began to mix with those of the other, I came to a tree, swept away its thorns and lay down (for rest) at its base. (WhileI lay there), four of the polytheists from the Meccans came to meand began to talk ill of the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim). I got enraged with them and moved to another tree. Theyhung their weapons (to the branches of the trees) and lay down(for rest). (While they lay there), somebody from the lower partof the valley cried out: Run up, O Muhajirs! Ibn Zunaym has beenmurdered. I drew my sword and attacked these four while they wereasleep. I seized their arms and collected them up in my hand, andsaid: By the Being Who has conferred honour upon Muhammad, noneof you shall raise his head, else I will smite his face. (Then) Icame driving them along to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).(At the same time), my uncle Amir came (to him) with a man fromAbalat called Mikraz. Amir was dragging him on a horse with athick covering on its back along with seventy polytheists. TheMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) cast a glance at them andsaid: Let them go (so that) they may prove guilty of breach oftrust more than once (before we take action against them). So theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forgave them. On thisoccasion, God revealed the Qur'anic verse: "It is He Whorestrained their hands from you and your hands from them in thevalley of Mecca after He has granted you a victory over them"(xiviii.24). Then we started moving back to Medina, and haltedat a place where there was a mountain between us and Banu Libyanwho were polytheists. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)asked God's forgiveness for one who ascended the mountain atnight to act as a scout for the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) and his Companions. I ascended (that mountain) twice orthrice that night.
(At last) we reached Medina. The Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him) sent his camels with his slave, Rabah, and I was withhim. I (also) went to the pasture with the horse of Talhah alongwith the camels. When the day dawned, AbdurRahman al-Fazari madea raid and drove away all the camels of the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him), and killed the man who looked after them. Isaid: Rabah, ride this horse, take it to Talhah ibn Ubaydullahand inform the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that thepolytheists have made away with his camels. Then I stood upon ahillock and turning my face to Medina, shouted thrice: Come toour help! Then I set out in pursuit of the raiders, shooting atthem with arrows and chanting a (self-eulogising) verse in theIambic meter: I am the son of al-Akwa' And today is the day ofdefeat for the mean. I would overtake a man from them, shoot athim an arrow which, piercing through the saddle, would reach hisshoulder, and I would say: Take it, chanting at the same time theverse: And I am the son of al-Akwa' And today is the day ofdefeat for the mean. By God, I continued shooting at them andhamstringing their animals. Whenever a horseman turned upon me, Iwould come to a tree and (hid myself) sitting at its base. Then Iwould shoot at him and hamstring his horse. (At last) theyentered a narrow mountain gorge. I ascended that mountain andheld them at bay throwing stones at them. I continued to chasethem in this way until I got all the camels of the Messenger ofAllah (peace be upon him) released and no camel was left withthem. They left me; then I followed them shooting at them(continually) until they dropped more than thirty mantles andthirty lances, lightening their burden. On everything theydropped, I put a mark with the help of (a piece of) stone so thatthe Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his Companionsmight recognise them (that it was booty left by the enemy). (Theywent on) until they came to a narrow valley when so and so, sonof Badr al-Fazari joined them. They (now), sat down to take theirbreakfast and I sat on the top of a tapering rock. Al-Fazarisaid: Who is that fellow I am seeing? They said: This fellow hasharassed us. By God, he has not left us since dusk and has been(continually) shooting at us until he has snatched everythingfrom our hands. He said: Four of you should make a dash at him(and kill him). (Accordingly), four of them ascended themountain coming towards me. When it became possible for me totalk to them, I said: Do you recognise me? They said: No. Who artthou? I said: I am Salamah, son of al-Akwa'. By the Being Who hashonoured the countenance of Muhammad (peace be upon him) I cankill any of you I like but none of you will be able to kill me.One of them said: I think (he is right). So they returned. I didnot move from my place until I saw the horsemen of the Messengerof Allah (peace be upon him), who came riding through the trees.Lo! the foremost among them was Akhram al-Asadi. Behind him wasAbuQatadah al-Ansari and behind him was al-Miqdad bin al-Aswadal-Kindi. I caught hold of the rein of Akhram's horse. (Seeingthis), they (the raiders) fled. I said (to Akhram): Akhram, guardyourself against them until Allah's Messenger and his Companionsjoin you. He said: O Salamah, if you believe in Allah and the Dayof Judgment and (if) you know that Paradise is a reality and Hellis a reality, you should not stand between me and martyrdom. So Ilet him go. Akhram and AbdurRahman (Fazari) met in combat. Akhramhamstrung AbdurRahman's horse and the latter struck him with hislance and killed him. AbdurRahman turned about riding Akhram'shorse. AbuQatadah, a horseman of the Messenger of Allah (peace beupon him), met AbdurRahman (in combat), smote him with his lanceand killed him. By the Being Who honoured the countenance ofMuhammad (peace be upon him), I followed them running on my feet(so fast) that I couldn't see behind me the Companions ofMuhammad (peace be upon him), nor any dust raised by theirhorses. (I followed them) until before sunset they reached avalley which had a spring of water, which was called Dhu Qarad,so that they could have a drink, for they were thirsty. They sawme running towards them. I turned them out of the valley beforethey could drink a drop of its water. They left the valley andran down a slope. I ran (behind them), overtook a man from them, shot him with an arrow through the shoulder blade and said: Takethis. I am the son of al-Akwa'; And today is the day ofannihilation for the people who are mean. The fellow (who waswounded) said: May his mother sweep over him! Are you the Akwa'who has been chasing us since morning? I said: Yes, O enemy ofthyself, the same Akwa'. They left two horses dead tired on thehillock and I came dragging them along to the Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him). I met Amir who had with him a containerhaving milk diluted with water and a container having water. Iperformed ablution with the water and drank the milk.
Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) whilehe was at (the spring of) water from which I had driven themaway. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had capturedthose camels and everything else I had captured and all thelances and mantles I had snatched from the polytheists; and Bilalhad slaughtered a she-camel from the camels I had seized from thepeople, and was roasting its liver and hump for the Messenger ofAllah (peace be upon him). I said: Messenger of Allah, let meselect from our people one hundred men and I will follow themarauders and I will finish them all so that nobody is left toconvey the news (of their destruction to their people). (At thesewords of mine), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)laughed so much that his molar teeth could be seen in the lightof the fire, and he said: Salamah, do you think you can do this?I said: Yes, by the Being Who has honoured you. He said: Now theyhave reached the land of Ghatafan where they are being feted. (Atthis time) a man from the Ghatafan came along and said: So and soslaughtered a camel for them. When they were taking off its skin, they saw dust (being raised far off). They said: (Akwa' and hiscompanions) have come. So, they went away fleeing. When it wasmorning, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Ourbest horseman today is AbuQatadah and our best footman today isSalamah. Then he gave me two shares of the booty - one sharemeant for the horseman and the other share meant for the footman- and combined both of them for me. Intending to return toMedina, he made me mount behind him on his she-camel namedal-Adba'. While we were travelling, a man from the Ansar whocould not be beaten in a race said: Is there anyone who couldcompete (with me) in a race to Medina? Is there any competitor? He continued repeating this. When I heard his talk, I said: Don'tyou show consideration to a dignified person and don't you haveawe for a noble man? He said: No, unless he be the Messenger(peace be upon him). I said: Messenger of Allah, may my fatherand mother be thy ransom, let me get down so that I may beat thisman (in the race). He said: If you wish, (you may). I said (tothe man): I am coming to thee. I then turned my feet, sprang upand ran and gasped (for a while) when one or two elevated placeswere left and again followed his heel and again gasped (for awhile) when one or two elevated places were left and again dasheduntil I joined him and gave a blow between his shoulders. I said:You have been overtaken, by God. He said: I think so. Thus, Ireached Medina ahead of him.
By God, we had stayed there (in Medina) only three nights when weset out to Khaybar with the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim). (On the way) my uncle, Amir, began to recite thefollowingrajaz verses for the people: By God, if Thou hadst not guided usaright, We would have neither practised charity nor offeredprayers. (O God!) We cannot do without Thy favours; Keep ussteadfast when we encounter the enemy, And descend tranquillityupon us. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Who isthis? Amir said: It is Amir. He said: May thy God forgive thee! The narrator said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) asked forgiveness for a particular person, he was sure toembrace martyrdom. Umar bin al-Khattab who was riding on hiscamel called out: Prophet of Allah, I wish you had allowed us tobenefit from Amir. Salamah continued: When we reached Khaybar, its king named Marhab advanced brandishing his sword andchanting: Khaybar knows that I am Marhab (who behaves like) Afully armed, and well-tried warrior, When the war comes spreadingits flames. My uncle, Amir, came out to combat with him, saying:Khaybar certainly knows that I am Amir, A fully armed veteran whoplunges into battles. They exchanged blows. Marhab's sword struckthe shield of Amir who bent forward to attack his opponent frombelow, but his sword recoiled upon him and cut the main artery inhis forearm which caused his death. Salamah said: I came out andheard some people among the Companions of the Holy Prophet (peacebe upon him) as saying): Amir's deed has gone waste; he haskilled himself. So I came to the Holy Prophet (peace be uponhim) weeping and I said: Messenger of Allah, has Amir's deed gonewaste? The Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Who passed thisremark? I said: Some of your Companions. He said: He who haspassed that remark has told a lie, for Amir there is a doublereward. Then he sent me to Ali who had sore eyes, and said: Iwill give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messengeror whom Allah and His Messenger love. So I went to Ali, broughthim beading him along as he had sore eyes, and I took him to theMessenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who applied his saliva tohis eyes and he got well. The Messenger of Allah (peace be uponhim) gave him the banner (and Ali went to meet Marhab in a singlecombat). The latter advanced chanting: Khaybar knows certainlythat I am Marhab, A fully armed and well-tried valorous warrior(hero) When war comes spreading its flames. Ali chanted in reply:I am the one whose mother named him Haydar, (And am) like a lionof the forest with a terror-striking countenance. I give myopponents the measure of sandara in exchange for sa' (i.e. returntheir attack with one that is much more fierce). The narratorsaid: Ali struck at the head of Marhab and killed him, so thevictory (capture of Khaybar) was due to him.
A person ate in the presence of Allah's Messenger (peace be uponhim) with his left hand, whereupon he said: Eat with your righthand. He said: I cannot do that, whereupon he (the Prophet) said:May you not be able to do that. It was vanity that prevented himfrom doing it, and he could not raise it (the right hand) up tohis mouth.
I (had the honour of) leading the white mule on which rodeAllah's Apostle (peace be upon him) and with him were Hasan andHusayn, till it reached the apartment of Allah's Apostle (peacebe upon him). The one amongst them was seated before him and theother one was seated behind him.
We went along with Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) to visit aperson suffering from fever. When I placed my hand upon him, Isaid: By Allah, I have never seen, till this day, a personrunning higher temperature than he. Thereupon Allah's Apostle(peace be upon him) turning his face to his companions, said: MayI not inform you of a severer temperature than this which thesetwo persons would run on the Day of Resurrection? And they weretwo hypocrites riding upon the camel turning their back towards(the Muslims).
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: A person sneezed in hispresence and he said to him: May Allah have mercy upon you. Andhe then sneezed for the second time and Allah's Apostle (peace beupon him) said to him: He is suffering from cold (and no responseis necessary).

A similar tradition (to the No. 4445) has also been transmittedby Salamah ibn al-Muhabbaq from the Prophet (peace be upon him). This version has: If she asked her to have intercourse with hervoluntarily, then she and a similar slave-girl would be given toher mistress from his property.

Concerning those who witnessed the Fear Prayer that was performed in the battle of Dhat-ur-Riqa' in the company of Allah's Apostle: one batch lined up behind him while another batch (lined up) facing the enemy. The Prophet led the batch that was with him in one Rak'a, and he stayed in the standing posture while that batch completed their (two Rakat) prayer by themselves and went away, lining in the face of the enemy, while the other batch came and he (i.e. the Prophet) offered his remaining Rak'a with them, and then, kept on sitting till they completed their prayer by themselves, and he then finished his prayer with Taslim along with them.
Narrated Ibn Az-Zubair: Jabir said, "We were with the Prophet at Nakhl," and then he mentioned the Fear prayer.

" (This happened in the last days of Abu Ad-Darda' during the rule of 'Uthman).
My father said, "I heard the Prophet delivering the Khutba on the pulpit and he said, 'Whoever comes for the Jumua prayer should take a bath (before coming).' "
'Abdul Malik wrote to Al-Hajjaj that he should not differ from Ibn 'Umar during Hajj. On the Day of 'Arafat, when the sun declined at midday, Ibn 'Umar came along with me and shouted near Al-Hajjaj's cotton (cloth) tent. Al-Hajjaj came out, wrapping himself with a waist-sheet dyed with safflower, and said, "O Abu Abdur-Rahman! What is the matter?" He said, "If you want to follow the Sunna (the tradition of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) ) then proceed (to 'Arafat)." Al-Hajjaj asked, "At this very hour?" Ibn 'Umar said, "Yes." He replied, "Please wait for me till I pour some water over my head (i.e. take a bath) and come out." Then Ibn 'Umar dismounted and waited till Al-Hajjaj came out. So, he (Al-Hajjaj) walked in between me and my father (Ibn 'Umar). I said to him, "If you want to follow the Sunna then deliver a brief sermon and hurry up for the stay at 'Arafat." He started looking at 'Abdullah (Ibn 'Umar) (inquiringly), and when 'Abdullah noticed that, he said that he had told the truth.
'Abdullah bin 'Umar used to send the weak among his family early to Mina. So they used to depart from Al-Mash'ar Al-Haram (that is Al-Muzdalifa) at night (when the moon had set) and invoke Allah as much as they could, and then they would return (to Mina) before the Imam had started from Al-Muzdalifa to Mina. So some of them would reach Mina at the time of the Fajr prayer and some of them would come later. When they reached Mina they would throw pebbles on the Jamra (Jamrat-al-'Aqaba) Ibn 'Umar used to say, "Allah's Apostle gave the permission to them (weak people) to do so."
Ibn 'Umar used to do Rami of the Jamrat-ud-Dunya (the Jamra near to the Khaif mosque) with seven small stones and used to recite Takbir on throwing every pebble. He then would go ahead till he reached the level ground where he would stand facing the Qibla for a long time to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands (while invoking). Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Wusta (middle Jamra) and then he would go to the left towards the middle ground, where he would stand facing the Qibla. He would remain standing there for a long period to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands, and would stand there for a long period. Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Aqaba from the middle of the valley, but he would not stay by it, and then he would leave and say, "I saw the Prophet doing like this."
(Abdullah) bin 'Umar used to say, "Is not (the following of) the tradition of Allah's Apostle sufficient for you? If anyone of you is prevented from performing Hajj, he should perform the Tawaf of the Ka'ba and between As-Safa and Al-Marwa and then finish the Ihram and everything will become legal for him which was illegal for him (during the state of Ihram) and he can perform Hajj in a following year and he should slaughter a Hadi or fast in case he cannot afford the Hadi."

Allah's Apostle said, 'What is wrong with you?' The people said, 'O Allah's Apostle! We haven't got any water to perform ablution with or to drink, except what you have in your utensil.' So the Prophet put his hand in the utensil and the water started spouting out between his fingers like springs. So we drank and performed ablution." I said to Jabir, "What was your number on that day?" He replied, "Even if we had been one hundred thousand, that water would have been sufficient for us. Anyhow, we were 1500."
That Abdullah bin Umar told him that he had divorced his wife while she was in her menses so 'Umar informed Allah's Apostle of that. Allah's Apostle became very angry at that and said, "(Ibn 'Umar must return her to his house and keep her as his wife till she becomes clean and then menstruates and becomes clean again, whereupon, if he wishes to divorce her, he may do so while she is still clean and before having any sexual relations with her, for that is the legally prescribed period for divorce as Allah has ordered."

Do not wish to face the enemy (in a battle) and ask Allah to save you (from calamities) but if you should face the enemy, then be patient and let it be known to you that Paradise is under the shades of swords." He then said, "O Allah! The Revealer of the (Holy) Book, the Mover of the clouds, and Defeater of Al-Ahzab (i.e. the clans of infidels), defeat them infidels and bestow victory upon us."
(the freed slave of Umar bin Ubaidullah) I was Umar's clerk. Once Abdullah bin Abi Aufa wrote a letter to Umar when he proceeded to Al-Haruriya. I read in it that Allah's Apostle in one of his military expeditions against the enemy, waited till the sun declined and then he got up amongst the people saying, "O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety, but when you face the enemy, be patient, and remember that Paradise is under the shades of swords." Then he said, "O Allah, the Revealer of the Holy Book, and the Mover of the clouds and the Defeater of the clans, defeat them, and grant us victory over them."
The Prophet said: "Do not wish to meet the enemy, but when you meet face) the enemy, be patient."
My father said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'The period of your stay as compared to the previous nations is like the period equal to the time between the 'Asr prayer and sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah and they acted (upon it) till midday then they were exhausted and were given one Qirat (of gold) each. And then the people of the Gospel were given the Gospel and they acted (upon it) till the 'Asr prayer then they were exhausted and were! given one Qirat each. And then we were given the Qur'an and we acted (upon it) till sunset and we were given two Qirats each. On that the people of both the scriptures said, "O our Lord! You have given them two Qirats and given us one Qirat, though we have worked more than they." Allah said, "Have I usurped some of your right? "They said, "No."Allah said: "That is my blessing I bestow upon whomsoever I wish." ' "
My father said that Allah's Apostle said, "Bilal pronounces 'Adhan at night, so keep on eating and drinking (Suhur) till Ibn Um Maktum pronounces Adhan." Salim added, "He was a blind man who would not pronounce the Adhan unless he was told that the day had dawned."
My father said, "Allah's Apostle used to raise both his hands up to the level of his shoulders when opening the prayer; and on saying the Takbir for bowing. And on raising his head from bowing he used to do the same and then say 'Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida, Rabbana walaka-l-hamd.' And he did not do that (i.e. raising his hands) in prostrations."

'Abdullah bin 'Umar used to do Rami of the Jamrat-ud-Dunya with seven small pebbles and used to recite Takbir on throwing each stone. He then would proceed further till he reached the level ground, where he would stay for a long time, facing the Qibla to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands. Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Wusta similarly and would go to the left towards the level ground, where he would stand for a long time facing the Qibla to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands. Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Aqaba from the middle of the valley, but he would not stay by it. Ibn 'Umar used to say, "I saw Allah's Apostle doing like that."
'Abdul-Malik bin Marwan wrote to Al-Hajjaj that he should follow 'Abdullah bin 'Umar in all the ceremonies of Hajj. So when it was the Day of 'Arafat (9th of Dhul-Hijja), and after the sun has deviated or has declined from the middle of the sky, I and Ibn 'Umar came and he shouted near the cotton (cloth) tent of Al-Hajjaj, "Where is he?" Al-Hajjaj came out. Ibn 'Umar said, "Let us proceed (to 'Arafat)." Al-Hajjaj asked, "Just now?" Ibn 'Umar replied, "Yes." Al-Hajjaj said, "Wait for me till I pour water on me (i.e. take a bath)." So, Ibn 'Umar dismounted (and waited) till Al-Hajjaj came out. He was walking between me and my father. "I have not seen the Prophet touching except the two Yemenite Corners (i.e. the ones facing Yemen)."
