Since April 2014, residents of Flint MI had been using the lead contaminated polluted water and the situation is not solved yet. To help cut costs, the city switched its drinking water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River and water became contaminated with lead in April 2014. Lead is a powerful neurotoxic metal that can cause severe damage to a child’s developing brain. Even at low levels of exposure, lead can cause permanent learning disabilities in children, delay puberty, cause hearing loss, and decrease IQ Now the Department of Environmental Quality in Michigan admits that it failed to require the chemicals needed to treat the corrosive Flint River water. In the initial time of lead contamination, it’s issued a public announcement that, the water should be used after boiling three times to remove harmful e-coli bacteria. Now the situation got worse and President Obama declared a federal state of emergency in Flint on January 16. Islamic Relief USA donors have sent 100,000 bottles of water to more than 3,500 families in Flint. Apart from this, IRUSA disaster response team members have been set up to assist with relief efforts in the city.
