37:76
وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلْكَرْبِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ Wanajjayn a hu waahlahu mina alkarbi alAAa th eem i
for We saved him and his household from that awesome calamity,29
  - Mohammad Asad

I.e., the Deluge.

We delivered him and his people from the mighty distress,

We delivered him and his family1 from the great distress,

 i.e., the believers in his family.

And We saved him and his household from the great distress,

37:77
وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلْبَاقِينَ WajaAAaln a th urriyyatahu humu alb a qeen a
and caused his offspring to endure [on earth];

and made his progeny to be the only survivors,

and made his descendants the sole survivors.1

 Noah’s sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And made his seed the survivors,

37:78
وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ Watarakn a AAalayhi fee al a khireen a
and We left him thus to be remembered30 among later generations:

Lit., "and we left upon him", sc., "this praise" or "remembrance", expressed in the salutation which follows.

and We left his good name among the later generations.

And We blessed him 'with honourable mention' among later generations:

And left for him among the later folk (the salutation):

And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times: 4083

His name is remembered for ever, commencing a new era in religious history. Note that the words in verses 78-81, with slight modifications, form a sort of refrain to the following paragraphs about Abraham, Moses, and Elias, but not about Lot and Jonah. Lot was a nephew of Abraham, and may be supposed to belong to the story of Abraham. Jonah's career nearly ended in a tragedy for himself, and his people got a further lease of power "for a time" (xxxvii. 148). And both Lot and Jonah belong to a limited local tradition.

37:79
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٍ فِى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ Sal a mun AAal a noo h in fee alAA a lameen a
Peace be upon Noah throughout all the worlds!"

Salutation to Nuh among the people of the worlds.

'Peace be upon Noah among all peoples.'

Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!

The story of the Flood is found in some form or other among all nations, and not only among those who follow the Mosaic tradition. In Greek tradition, the hero of the Flood is Deukalion, with his wife Pyrrha: in Indian tradition (Shatapatha Brahmana and Mahabharata) it is the sage Manu and the Fish. The Chinese tradition of a great Flood is recorded in Sha-King. Among American Indians the tradition was common to many tribes.

37:80
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ Inn a ka tha lika najzee almu h sineen a
Verily, thus do We reward the doers of good-

Thus do We reward the righteous.

Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers.

Lo! thus do We reward the good.

إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ Innahu min AAib a din a almumineen a
for he was truly one of our believing servants:

ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ Thumma aghraqn a al a khareen a
[and so We saved him and those who followed him] and then We caused the others to drown.

Then the rest We drowned in the great flood.

37:83
وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ Wainna min sheeAAatihi laibr a heem a
AND, BEHOLD, of his persuasion was Abraham, too,

Surely Ibrahim belonged to the first group (who followed Nuh's way),

And indeed, one of those who followed his way was Abraham.

The main story will be found in xxi. 51-73; but the episode about his readiness and that of his son to submit to the most extreme form of self-sacrifice under trial (in verses 102-107 below) is told here for the first time, as this Sura deals with the theme, "Not my will, but Thine be done!" In "followed his way", the pronoun "his" refers to Noah, "he", of verse 81 above.

37:84
إِذْ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ I th j a a rabbahu biqalbin saleem in
when he turned to his Sustainer with a heart free of evil,

when he came to his Rabb with a pure heart.

'Remember' when he came to his Lord with a pure heart,

When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;

A sound heart: qalb salim: a heart that is pure, and unaffected by the diseases that afflict others. As the heart in Arabic is taken to be not only the seat of feelings and affections, but also of intelligence and resulting action, it implies the whole character. Cf. Abraham's title of Hanif (the True): ii. 135 and n. 134. Cf. also xxvi. 89: "only he will prosper who brings to Allah a sound heart."

إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ I th q a la liabeehi waqawmihi m atha taAAbudoon a
and [thus] spoke to his father and his people: "What is it that you worship?

Behold, he said to his father and to his people: "What are these that you worship?

37:86
أَئِفْكًا ءَالِهَةً دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ Aifkan a lihatan doona All a hi tureedoon a
Do you want [to bow down before] a lie - [before] deities other than God?

Would you serve false gods instead of Allah?

Is it false gods that you desire instead of Allah?

Is it a falsehood--gods beside Allah--that ye desire?

"Is it a Falsehood gods other than Allah that ye desire? 4087

False worship-worship of idols or stars or symbols, or Mammon or Self-is due either to false and degrading conceptions of Allah, or to a sort of make-believe, where practice is inconsistent with knowledge or ignores the inner promptings of Conscience. Abraham's challenge to his people is: 'Are you fools or hypocrites?'

37:87
فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ Fam a th annukum birabbi alAA a lameen a
What, then, do you think of the Sustainer of all the worlds?"31

Abraham's argument goes thus: "Do you believe in the existence of a Creator and Lord of the universe?" - a question which his people were bound to answer in the affirmative, since belief in a Supreme Deity was an integral part of their religion. The next stage of the argument would be: "How, then, can you worship idols - the work of your own hands - side by side with the idea of a Creator of the universe?"

What is your idea about the Rabb of the worlds?"

37:88
فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةً فِى ٱلنُّجُومِ Fana th ara na th ratan fee a l nnujoom i
Then he cast a glance at the stars,32

Obviously an allusion to his early, futile attempts at identifying God with the stars, the sun or the moon (see {6:76-78}).

 His people reportedly made decisions based on constellations, so Abraham (ﷺ) pretended to do the same to convince them he was not able to join them at their pagan feast.

37:89
فَقَالَ إِنِّى سَقِيمٌ Faq a la innee saqeem un
and said, "Verily, I am sick [at heart]!" 33

Sc., "at your worshipping idols instead of God" (Ibn Kathir; cf. also Lane IV, 1384).

and said "I am feeling sick."

then said, 'I am really sick.'1

Then said: Lo! I feel sick!

And he said "I am indeed sick (at heart)!" 4089

The grief was really preying on his mind and soul, that he should be associated with such falsehoods. His father himself was among the chief supporters of such falsehoods, and his people were given up wholly to them. He could not possibly share in their mummeries, and they left him in disgust. Then he made his practical protest in the manner narrated in xxi. 56-64.

فَتَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ Fatawallaw AAanhu mudbireen a
and at that they turned their backs on him and went away.

So his people left him behind and went away to their national fair.

37:91
فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ Far a gha il a a lihatihim faq a la al a takuloon a
Thereupon he approached their gods stealthily and said, "What! You do not eat [of the offerings placed before you]?

He sneaked into the temple of their gods and addressed them: "Why don't you eat from these offerings before you?

Then he 'stealthily' advanced towards their gods, and said 'mockingly', 'Will you not eat 'your offerings'?

Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat?

مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنطِقُونَ M a lakum l a tan t iqoon a
What is amiss with you that you do not speak?"

What is the matter with you that you don't even speak?"

What is wrong with you that you cannot speak?'

فَرَاغَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضَرْبًۢا بِٱلْيَمِينِ Far a gha AAalayhim d arban bi a lyameen i
And then he fell upon them, smiting them with his right hand.34

فَأَقْبَلُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يَزِفُّونَ Faaqbaloo ilayhi yaziffoon a
[But] then the others came towards him hur-riedly [and accused him of his deed].

The people came running to the scene.

Later, his people came rushing towards him 'furiously'.

قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ Q a la ataAAbudoona m a tan h itoon a
He answered: "Do you worship something that you [yourselves] have carved,

"Would you worship that which you have carved with your own hands," he said,

He argued, 'How can you worship what you carve 'with your own hands',

He said: Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve

His action was a challenge, and he drives home the challenge now with argument. 'Do you worship your own handiwork? Surely worship is due to Him Who made you and made possible your handiwork!'
