41:16
فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِىٓ أَيَّامٍ نَّحِسَاتٍ لِّنُذِيقَهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْخِزْىِ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ أَخْزَىٰ ۖ وَهُمْ لَا يُنصَرُونَ Faarsaln a AAalayhim ree h an s ar s aran fee ayy a min na h is a tin linu th eeqahum AAa tha ba alkhizyi fee al h ay a ti a l dduny a walaAAa tha bu al a khirati akhz a wahum l a yun s aroon a
and thereupon We let loose upon them a stormwind raging through days of misfortune,21 so as to give them, in the life of this world, a foretaste of suffering through humiliation: but [their] suffering in the life to come will be far more humiliating, and they will have none to succour them.

So, over a few ill-omened days, We let loose on them a furious hurricane to make them taste a shameful scourge in this life, but more shameful still will be the punishment of the hereafter, and they shall have none to help them.

So We sent against them a furious wind,1 for 'several' miserable days, to make them taste a humiliating punishment in this worldly life. But far more humiliating will be the punishment of the Hereafter. And they will not be helped.

Therefor We let loose on them a raging wind in evil days, that We might make them taste the torment of disgrace in the life of the world. And verily the doom of the Hereafter will be more shameful, and they will not be helped.

41:17
وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمْ فَٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ ٱلْعَمَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ صَـٰعِقَةُ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْهُونِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ Waamm a thamoodu fahadayn a hum fa i sta h abboo alAAam a AAal a alhud a faakha th athum sa AAiqatu alAAa tha bi alhooni bim a k a noo yaksiboon a
And as for [the tribe of] Thamud, We offered them guidance, but they chose blindness in preference to guidance: and so the thunderbolt of shameful suffering fell upon them as an outcome of all [the evil] that they had wrought;

As for Thamud, We offer them Our guidance, but they preferred to remain blind rather than to receive guidance towards the Right Way; so the thunderbolt of humiliating scourge seized them for their misdeeds,

As for Thamûd, We showed them guidance, but they preferred blindness over guidance. So the blast of a disgracing punishment overtook them for what they used to commit.

The story of the Thamud usually goes with that of the 'Ad. Cf. xxvi. 140-59; also vii. 73-79, and n. 1043.

"The thunder bolt:" i.e., deafening noises like those of thunder and lightning; or the rumbling of a terrible earthquake. In vii. 78, an earthquake is suggested: see n. 1047 to that verse. Cf. also above. xli. 13.

41:18
وَنَجَّيْنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ Wanajjayn a alla th eena a manoo wak a noo yattaqoon a
and We saved [only] those who had attained to faith and were conscious of Us.

but We saved those who believed and had the fear of Allah.

And We delivered those who were faithful and were mindful 'of Allah'.

41:19
وَيَوْمَ يُحْشَرُ أَعْدَآءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمْ يُوزَعُونَ Wayawma yu h sharu aAAd a o All a hi il a a l nn a ri fahum yoozaAAoon a
Hence, [warn all men of] the Day when the enemies of God shall be gathered together before the fire, and then shall be driven onward,

Imagine that Day when the enemies of Allah will be brought together and led to the hellfire in groups.

'Consider' the Day 'when' the enemies of Allah will be gathered for the Fire, all driven in ranks.

41:20
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا مَا جَآءُوهَا شَهِدَ عَلَيْهِمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ H att a i tha m a j a ooh a shahida AAalayhim samAAuhum waab sa ruhum wajulooduhum bim a k a noo yaAAmaloon a
till, when they come close to it, their hearing and their sight and their [very] skins will bear witness against them, speaking of what they were doing [on earth].

Finally when they reach there, their ears, their eyes, and their skins will testify to their misdeeds.

When they reach it, their ears, eyes, and skin will testify against what they used to do.1

 It is reported in Ibn Kathîr’s commentary that, on the Day of Judgment, the wicked will deny the evil deeds in their records—as a desperate attempt to escape the horrible punishment in Hell. They will be asked if they accept Allah, the angels, or even their own families and neighbours as witnesses, but they will refuse. So Allah will make their organs testify against them.

Till, when they reach it, their ears and their eyes and their skins testify against them as to what they used to do.

At length when they reach the (Fire) their hearing their sight and their skins will bear witness against them as to (all) their deeds. 4487

All the members of their bodies and the faculties of their minds, which they misused, will bear witness against them. Similarly, in xxxvi. 65, their hands and their feet bear witness against them. The "skin" not only includes the sense of touch (which is so often misused in sex), but also the sense of taste and the sense of smell, which are specialised forms of the organ of touch. All the sensory organs, and all their intellectual and emotional counterparts advance us by their use and pull us down by their misuse. They become tell-tale witnesses against us if abused.

41:21
وَقَالُوا۟ لِجُلُودِهِمْ لِمَ شَهِدتُّمْ عَلَيْنَا ۖ قَالُوٓا۟ أَنطَقَنَا ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنطَقَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ وَهُوَ خَلَقَكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ Waq a loo lijuloodihim lima shahidtum AAalayn a q a loo an t aqan a All a hu alla th ee an t aqa kulla shayin wahuwa khalaqakum awwala marratin wailayhi turjaAAoon a
And they will ask their skins, "Why did you bear witness against us?" - [and] these will reply: "God, who gives speech to all things, has given speech to us [as well]: for He [it is who] has created you in the first instance - and unto Him you are [now] brought back.

And they will ask their skins: "Why did you testify against us?" Their skins will reply: "Allah Who gives the faculty of speech to everything, has made us speak. He is the One Who created you to begin with, and now to Him you are being brought back.

They will ask their skin 'furiously', 'Why have you testified against us?' It will say, 'We have been made to speak by Allah, Who causes all things to speak. He 'is the One Who' created you the first time, and to Him you were bound to return.

And they say unto their skins: Why testify ye against us? They say: Allah hath given us speech Who giveth speech to all things, and Who created you at the first, and unto Whom ye are returned.

They will say to their skins: "Why bear ye witness against us?" They will say: "Allah hath given us speech (He) Who giveth speech to everything: He created you for the first time and unto Him were ye to return. 4488

A new phase of their existence will now dawn on them. They used to think that if they concealed their evil deeds from the rest of the world, nothing would happen to them! But Allah can give "tongues to trees", and can make every fact in life, known and unknown to the world, contribute to the elucidation of truth and justice. When we succumb to evil, our limbs and faculties themselves betray us.

41:22
وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَن يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَآ أَبْصَـٰرُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُودُكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن ظَنَنتُمْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَعْلَمُ كَثِيرًا مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ Wam a kuntum tastatiroona an yashhada AAalaykum samAAukum wal a ab sa rukum wal a juloodukum wal a kin th anantum anna All a ha l a yaAAlamu katheeran mimm a taAAmaloon a
And you did not try to hide [your sins] lest your hearing or your sight or your skins bear witness against you: nay, but you thought that God did not know much of what you were doing

During your life on earth you use to hide yourselves while committing crimes, you never thought that your own ears, your own eyes and your own skins would ever testify against you. Rather you thought that even Allah had no knowledge of many things that you do.

You did not 'bother to' hide yourselves from your ears, eyes, and skin to prevent them from testifying against you. Rather, you assumed that Allah did not know much of what you used to do.

Ye did not hide yourselves lest your ears and your eyes and your skins should testify against you, but ye deemed that Allah knew not much of what ye did.

"Ye did not seek to hide yourselves lest your hearing your sight and your skins should bear witness against you! But ye did think that Allah knew not many of the things that ye used to do! 4489

The limbs and faculties will say: "You did not seek to hide your evil from us: in fact you used us for your evil, because we were in your power. Did you not know that Allah knew everything and that our knowledge would be evidence against you?"

41:23
وَذَٰلِكُمْ ظَنُّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى ظَنَنتُم بِرَبِّكُمْ أَرْدَىٰكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُم مِّنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ Wa tha likum th annukumu alla th ee th anantum birabbikum ard a kum faa s ba h tum mina alkh a sireen a
and that very thought which you thought about your Sustainer has brought you to perdition, and so now you find yourselves among the lost!"

This thought of yours, which you entertained concerning your Rabb, has brought you to destruction and now you have become of those who are utterly lost."

It was that 'false' assumption you entertained about your Lord that has brought about your doom, so you have become losers.'

That, your thought which ye did think about your Lord, hath ruined you; and ye find yourselves (this day) among the lost.

"But this thought of yours which ye did entertain concerning your Lord hath brought you to destruction and (now) have ye become of those utterly lost!" 4490

"You now see the situation! We were given for your use and service. You misused us, to your own utter and irretrievable destruction!"

41:24
فَإِن يَصْبِرُوا۟ فَٱلنَّارُ مَثْوًى لَّهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَسْتَعْتِبُوا۟ فَمَا هُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُعْتَبِينَ Fain ya s biroo fa al nn a ru mathwan lahum wain yastaAAtiboo fam a hum mina almuAAtabeen a
And then, [even] if they endure [their lot] in patience, the fire will still be their abode;22 and if they pray to be allowed to make amends, they will not be allowed to do so:23

Sc., "unless God wills to reprieve them": see the last paragraph of 6:128 and the corresponding note [114]; also the hadith quoted in note [10] on 40:12 .

Lit., "they will not be of those who are allowed to make amends": an allusion to the request of the doomed, on the Day of Judgment, to be granted a "second chance" on earth, and to God's refusal of this request (cf. {6:27-28} and 32:12 ).

Then, whether they have patience or not, the fire will still be their home, and even if they beg for pardon, it shall not be granted to them.

Even if they endure patiently, the Fire will 'always' be their home. And if they 'beg to' appease 'their Lord', they will never be allowed to.

And though they are resigned, yet the Fire is still their home; and if they ask for favor, yet they are not of those unto whom favor can be shown.

If then they have patience the Fire will be a Home for them! And if they beg to be received into favor into favor will they not (then) be received. 4491

If they have patience: there is sarcasm in the meaning. "Let them not be impatient: they will soon find a home in the Fire of Hell! If they ask for grace and forgiveness then, it will be too late."

41:25
وَقَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَآءَ فَزَيَّنُوا۟ لَهُم مَّا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَحَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَوْلُ فِىٓ أُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ خَـٰسِرِينَ Waqayya d n a lahum quran a a fazayyanoo lahum m a bayna aydeehim wam a khalfahum wa h aqqa AAalayhimu alqawlu fee omamin qad khalat min qablihim mina aljinni wa a linsi innahum k a noo kh a sireen a
for [when they became oblivious of Us,] We assigned to them [their own evil impulses as their] other selves,24 and these made appear goodly to them whatever lay open before them and whatever was beyond their ken.25 And so, the sentence [of doom] will have fallen due upon them together with the [other sinful] communities of invisible beings26 and humans that passed away before their time: verily, they [all] will indeed be lost!

Or: "soul-mates" (cf. 4:38 ). The verb qarana, from which the noun qarin is derived, signifies "he linked" or "intimately associated" or "yoked together [one thing with another]". Cf. 43:36 - "as for anyone who chooses to remain blind to the remembrance of the Most Gracious, to him We assign an [enduring] evil impulse [lit., "a satan"], to become his other self".

Lit., "that which was between their hands and that which was behind them": i.e., their own evil impulses (which had become their "other selves", as it were) made alluring to them the unrestrained enjoyment, without any moral discrimination, of all the worldly attractions which lay open before them, causing them, at the same time, to dismiss as an illusion the idea of ressurrection and of God's judgment - thus giving them a false sense of security with regard to something that was beyond their ken.

We have assigned intimate companions, of like nature, for them Who make their past and present seem fair to them; and the same word (sentence of punishment) proved true against them, which overtook generations of jinn and men who have gone before them, that they shall surely be in loss.

We placed at their disposal 'evil' associates who made their past and future 'misdeeds' appealing to them.1 'So' the fate of earlier communities of jinn and humans has been justified against them 'as well', 'for' they were truly losers.

 i.e., associating others with Allah in worship and denying the Hereafter. See 43:36-37.

And We assigned them comrades (in the world), who made their present and their past fair seeming unto them. And the Word concerning nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before them hath effect for them. Verily they are the losers.

And We have destined for them intimate companions (of like nature) Who made alluring to them what was before them and behind them; and the sentence among the previous generations of Jinns and men who have passed away is proved against them; for they are utterly lost. 4492 4493 4494 4495

Just as the idea of happiness in heaven is expressed, not only by individual satisfaction, but by congenial society, so the idea of Punishment in hell is deepened by the fact that Evil will be made to meet evil: those who made sin fair-seeming in this life will be there to share in the regrets and mutual recriminations which will make life a burden. In fact, in these Ha-Mim verses, the idea of fit companionship for the Good and uncongenial company for the Evil, runs like a thread throughout. See Introduction to S. xl.

They painted in glowing colours the pleasures of sin in the past and the pleasure of sin in the future, thus practising a double deception, which will now be found out.

Jinns: see n. 929 to vi. 100. All spirits of wickedness and all men who submitted to them, in the past, were under one common sentence; and future generations who embrace evil will also join them. Cf. vi. 128.

The echo here of verse 23 above completes the argument from another point of view.

41:26
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَا تَسْمَعُوا۟ لِهَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانِ وَٱلْغَوْا۟ فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَغْلِبُونَ Waq a la alla th eena kafaroo l a tasmaAAoo lih atha alqur a ni wa i lghaw feehi laAAallakum taghliboon a
NOW THOSE who are bent on denying the truth say [unto one another]: "Do not listen to this Qur'an, but rather talk frivolously about it, so that you might gain the upper hand!"27

This is an allusion to efforts aimed at discrediting the Qur'an by describing it as "invented" by Muhammad for his own - personal and political - ends, as a series of "misunderstood quotations" from earlier scriptures, as the result of "hallucinations", and so forth: all of which implies that the opponents of the Qur'anic message instinctively feel its force, realizing at the same time that it endangers their self-complacent, materialistic outlook on life and ought, therefore, to be combatted. This explains the statement, at the end of verse {28}, that they "knowingly reject" God's messages.

The disbelievers say: "Do not listen this Qur'an and make noise when it is recited so that you may gain the upper hand."

The disbelievers advised 'one another', 'Do not listen to this Quran but drown it out so that you may prevail.'

Those who disbelieve say: Heed not this Qur'an, and drown the hearing of it; haply ye may conquer.

The Unbelievers say: "Listen not to this Qur'an but talk at random in the midst of its (reading) that ye may gain the upper hand!" 4496

A favourite trick of those who wish to dishonour Revelation is, not only not to listen to it themselves, but to talk loudly and insolently when it is being read, so that even the true listeners may not be able to perform their devotions. They think that they are drowning the voice of Allah: in fact they are piling up misery for themselves in the future. For Allah's voice can never be silenced.

41:27
فَلَنُذِيقَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ أَسْوَأَ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ Falanu th eeqanna alla th eena kafaroo AAa tha ban shadeedan walanajziyannahum aswaa alla th ee k a noo yaAAmaloon a
But We shall most certainly give those who are [thus] bent on denying the truth a taste of suffering severe, and We shall most certainly requite them according to the worst of their deeds!

We will certainly punish the disbelievers and requite them for the worst of their misdeeds.

So We will certainly make the disbelievers taste a severe punishment, and We will surely repay them according to the worst of their deeds.

Nothing that they can do, however outrageous, will escape its fit punishment. And to reject Allah's Signs is to shut the very door to His Grace and Mercy.

41:28
ذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ أَعْدَآءِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّارُ ۖ لَهُمْ فِيهَا دَارُ ٱلْخُلْدِ ۖ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ Tha lika jaz a o aAAd a i All a hi a l nn a ru lahum feeh a d a ru alkhuldi jaz a an bim a k a noo bi a y a tin a yaj h adoon a
That requital of God's enemies will be the fire [of the hereafter]: in it will they have an abode of unmeasurable duration as an outcome of their having knowingly rejected Our messages.28

hell that is, the reward for such enemies of Allah, which will be their eternal home: a reward for their denying Our revelations.

That is the reward of Allah's enemies: the Fire, which will be their eternal home- a 'fitting' reward for their denial of Our revelations.

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ أَرِنَا ٱلَّذَيْنِ أَضَلَّانَا مِنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلْإِنسِ نَجْعَلْهُمَا تَحْتَ أَقْدَامِنَا لِيَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلْأَسْفَلِينَ Waq a la alla th eena kafaroo rabban a arin a alla th ayni a d all a n a mina aljinni wa a linsi najAAalhum a ta h ta aqd a min a liyakoon a mina alasfaleen a
And they who [in their life on earth] were bent on denying the truth will [thereupon] exclaim: "O our Sustainer! Show us those of the invisible beings and humans that have led us astray: 29 we shall trample them underfoot, so that they shall be the lowest of all!"30

Wherein, the disbelievers will say: "Our Rabb! Show us those among jinns and mankind who misled us: we shall trample them under our feet so that they become utterly disgraced."

The disbelievers will 'then' cry, 'Our Lord! Show us those jinn and humans who led us astray: we will put them under our feet so that they will be among the lowest 'in Hell'.'

It is one of the qualities of sin and all evil, that it wishes to drag down others in its own camp, and rejoices to see them humiliated and disgraced, just as, in the opposite case, the good rejoice to help and honour others and make them happy wherever they can. Cf. vi. 112-113.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا۟ وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا۟ وَأَبْشِرُوا۟ بِٱلْجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِى كُنتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ Inna alla th eena q a loo rabbun a All a hu thumma istaq a moo tatanazzalu AAalayhimu almal a ikatu all a takh a foo wal a ta h zanoo waabshiroo bi a ljannati allatee kuntum tooAAadoon a
[But,] behold, as for those who say, "Our Sustainer is God," and then steadfastly pursue the right way - upon them do angels often descend, [saying:] "Fear not and grieve not, but receive the glad tiding of that paradise which has been promised to you!

As for those who say: "Our God is Allah," and then stay firm on it, the angels will descend on them, saying: "Let nothing fear or grieve you. Rejoice for the good news of paradise that has been promised to you.

Surely those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them,1 'saying,' 'Do not fear, nor grieve. Rather, rejoice in the good news of Paradise, which you have been promised.

Lo! those who say: Our Lord is Allah, and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them, saying: Fear not nor grieve, but bear good tidings of the paradise which ye are promised.

In the case of those who say "Our Lord is Allah" and further stand straight and steadfast the angels descend on them (from time to time): "Fear ye not!" (they suggest) "nor grieve! but receive the Glad Tidings of the Garden (of Bliss) the which ye were promised! 4499

The people who succeed in eternal Life are those who recognise and understand the one and only Eternal Reality, that is Allah, and further shape their probationary Life firmly and steadfastly on the principles of that Truth and Reality. They will have their friends and protectors in the good angels, in contrast to the evil ones, who will have no friendship or protection, but only the reproaches of the Satan.
