56:46

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ Wak a noo yu s irroona AAal a al h inthi alAAa th eem i

and persisted in the worst of sin.¹

- Mustafa Khattab

And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!

56:47

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ Wak a noo yaqooloona ai tha mitn a wakunn a tur a ban waAAi th a man ainn a lamabAAoothoon a

They used to ask 'mockingly', 'When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?

And they used to say "what! when we die and become dust and bones shall we then indeed be raised up again? ⁵²⁴⁵

56:48

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ Awa a b a on a alawwaloon a

And our forefathers as well?'

- Mustafa Khattab

"(We) and our fathers of old?"

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:49

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ Qul inna alawwaleena wa a l a khireen a

Say, 'O Prophet,' 'Most certainly, earlier and later generations

Say: "Yea those of old and those of later times

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:50

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ LamajmooAAoona il a meeq a ti yawmin maAAloom in

will surely be gathered 'together' for the appointed Day.

"All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day Well-known. ⁵²⁴⁶

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:51

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ Thumma innakum ayyuh a a l dda lloona almuka thth iboon a

Then you, O misguided deniers,

"Then will ye truly o ye that go wrong and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:52

لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ La a kiloona min shajarin min zaqqoom in

will certainly eat from 'the fruit of' the trees of Zaqqûm,¹

"Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. ⁵²⁴⁷

56:53

فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ Fam a lioona minh a albu t oon a

filling up 'your' bellies with it.

"Then will ye fill your insides therewith

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:54

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ Fash a riboona AAalayhi mina al h ameem i

Then on top of that you will drink boiling water-

- Mustafa Khattab

"And drink Boiling Water on top of it:

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:55

فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ Fash a riboona shurba alheem i

and you will drink 'it' like thirsty camels do.'

"Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst! ⁵²⁴⁸

56:56

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ H atha nuzuluhum yawma a l ddeen i

This will be their accommodation on the Day of Judgment.

Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!

56:57

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ Na h nu khalaqn a kum falawl a tu s addiqoon a

It is We Who created you. Will you not then believe 'in resurrection'?

It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? ⁵²⁴⁹

56:58

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ Afaraaytum m a tumnoon a

Have you considered what you ejaculate?

- Mustafa Khattab

Do ye then see? The (human seed) that ye throw out,

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:59

ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ Aantum takhluqoonahu am na h nu alkh a liqoon a

Is it you who create 'a child out of' it, or is it We Who do so?

- Mustafa Khattab

Is it ye who create it or are We the Creators?

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:60

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ Na h nu qaddarn a baynakumu almawta wam a na h nu bimasbooqeen a

We have ordained death for 'all of' you, and We cannot be prevented

- Mustafa Khattab

We have decreed Death to be your common lot and We are not to be frustrated ⁵²⁵⁰

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:61

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ AAal a an nubaddila amth a lakum wanunshiakum fee m a l a taAAlamoon a

from transforming and recreating you in forms unknown to you.

From changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (Forms) that ye know not.

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:62

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ Walaqad AAalimtumu a l nnashata alool a falawl a ta th akkaroon a

You already know how you were first created. Will you not then be mindful?

- Mustafa Khattab

And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises?

56:63

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ Afaraaytum m a ta h ruthoon a

Have you considered what you sow?

See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? ⁵²⁵¹

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:64

ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ Aantum tazraAAoonahu am na h nu a l zz a riAAoon a

Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who do so?

- Mustafa Khattab

Is it ye that cause it to grow or are We the Cause?

- Abdullah Yusuf Ali

56:65

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ Law nash a o lajaAAaln a hu h u ta man fa th altum tafakkahoon a

Surah 56. Al-Waqia

Qur'an

Translation

Your search did not yield any results.

and would persist in heinous sinning,

- Mohammad Asad

They persisted in heinous sins

- Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik

and persisted in the worst of sin.1

And used to persist in the awful sin.

and would say, "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? -

and used to say: "When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised to life again?

They used to ask 'mockingly', 'When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?

And they used to say: When we are dead and have come dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,

Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times

Tell them: "Surely those of old and those of present age

Say, 'O Prophet,' 'Most certainly, earlier and later generations

Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time

Say: "Yea those of old and those of later times

will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]:

shall certainly be brought together on an appointed time of a known Day.

will surely be gathered 'together' for the appointed Day.

Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.

and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie,

Then, "O the mistaken rejecters,

Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,

you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit,20

you shall eat of the Zaqqum tree,

Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum

and will have to fill your bellies therewith,

and persisted in the worst of sin.¹

you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit,²⁰

will certainly eat from 'the fruit of' the trees of Zaqqûm,¹

"Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. ⁵²⁴⁷

"Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst! ⁵²⁴⁸

It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? ⁵²⁴⁹

Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit?²¹
