63:1
إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ قَالُوا۟ نَشْهَدُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّكَ لَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ I tha j a aka almun a fiqoona q a loo nashhadu innaka larasoolu All a hi wa A ll a hu yaAAlamu innaka larasooluhu wa A ll a hu yashhadu inna almun a fiqeena lak ath iboon a
WHEN THE HYPOCRITES come unto thee, they say, "We bear witness that thou art indeed God's Apostle!" But God knows that thou art truly His Apostle; and He bears witness that the hypocrites are indeed false [in their declaration of faith].

When the hypocrites come to you, they say: "We bear witness that you are indeed the Rasool of Allah." Allah knows that you are indeed His Rasool, and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars.

When the hypocrites come to you 'O Prophet', they say, 'We bear witness that you are certainly the Messenger of Allah'- and surely Allah knows that you are His Messenger- but Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars.

When the hypocrites come unto thee (O Muhammad), they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's messenger. And Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the Hypocrites are speaking falsely.

The hypocrite element, if one exists in any society, is a source of weakness and a danger to its health and its very existence. When the holy Prophet came to Madinah in Hijrat, his arrival was welcome to all the patriotic citizens: it not only united them in common life and healed their old differences, but it brought honour and light to them in the person of the greatest living Prophet. But there were some baser elements filled with envy. Such hopes as they had entertained of attaining power and leadership by playing on the animosities of the factions were now dashed to the ground. They now began to work underground. For fear of the majority they dared not oppose the new growing Brotherhood of Righteousness. They tried to undermine it by intriguing secretly with its enemies and swearing openly its loyalty to the holy Prophet. They were thoroughly unmasked and discredited at the battle of Uhud. See iii. 167, and n. 476.

63:2
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ Ittakha th oo aym a nahum junnatan fa s addoo AAan sabeeli All a hi innahum s a a m a k a noo yaAAmaloon a
They have made their oaths a cover [for their falseness], and thus they turn others away from the path of God.1 Evil, indeed, is all that they are wont to do:

They use their faith as a disguise, and thus debar others from the Way of Allah. Evil is indeed what they do.

They have made their 'false' oaths as a shield, hindering 'others' from the Way of Allah. Evil indeed is what they do!

They make their faith a pretext that they may turn (men) from the way of Allah. Verily evil is that which they are wont to do,

They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah: truly evil are their deeds. 5467

63:3
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ءَامَنُوا۟ ثُمَّ كَفَرُوا۟ فَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ Tha lika biannahum a manoo thumma kafaroo fa t ubiAAa AAal a quloobihim fahum l a yafqahoon a
this, because [they profess that] they have attained to faith, whereas2 [inwardly] they deny the truth - and so, a seal has been set on their hearts, so that they can no longer understand [what is true and what false].3

The particle thumma ("and then") has often the same function as the simple conjunctive wa ("and"), which in this case may be properly rendered as "whereas".

This is because they believed and then renounced their faith. Their hearts are sealed, therefore, they are devoid of understanding.

This is because they believed and then abandoned faith. Therefore, their hearts have been sealed, so they do not comprehend.

63:4
وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ تُعْجِبُكَ أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ وَإِن يَقُولُوا۟ تَسْمَعْ لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ كَأَنَّهُمْ خُشُبٌ مُّسَنَّدَةٌ ۖ يَحْسَبُونَ كُلَّ صَيْحَةٍ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ هُمُ ٱلْعَدُوُّ فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ قَـٰتَلَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ۖ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ Wai tha raaytahum tuAAjibuka ajs a muhum wain yaqooloo tasmaAA liqawlihim kaannahum khushubun musannadatun ya h saboona kulla s ay h atin AAalayhim humu alAAaduwwu fa i hth arhum q a talahumu All a hu ann a yufakoon a
Now when thou seest them, their outward appearance may please thee; and when they speak, thou art inclined to lend ear to what they say.4 [But though they may seem as sure of themselves] as if they were timbers [firmly] propped up, they think that every shout is [directed] against them. They are the [real] enemies [of all faith], so beware of them. [They deserve the imprecation,] "May God destroy them!"5 How perverted are their minds!6 -

Lit., "thou dost give ear to them": i.e., hypocrisy has usually a plausible outward aspect inasmuch as it is meant to deceive.

Regarding my interpolation of the phrase "They deserve the imprecation", see note [45] on the identical sentence at the end of 9:30 .

When you see them, their good stature pleases you; and when they speak, you listen to what they say. Yet they are as worthless as hollow pieces of propped up timber. Every shout they hear, they think it to be against them. They are your enemies, so guard yourselves against them. May Allah destroy them! How perverse they are!

When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And when they speak, you listen to their 'impressive' speech. But they are 'just' like 'worthless' planks of wood leaned 'against a wall'. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded 'from the truth'?

And when thou seest them their figures please thee; and if they speak thou givest ear unto their speech. (They are) as though they were blocks of wood in striped cloaks. They deem every shout to be against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. Allah confound them! How they are perverted!

When thou lookest at them their exteriors please thee; and when they speak thou listenest to their words. They are as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up (unable to stand on their own). They think that every cry is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them. The curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded (away from the Truth)! 5468 5470 5471

Good timber is strong in itself and can support roofs and buildings. Hollow timber is useless, and has to be propped up against other things. The Hypocrites are like rotten timber. They have no firm character themselves, and for others they are unsafe props to rely upon.

Their conscience always troubles them. If any cry is raised, they immediately get alarmed, and think it is against themselves. Such men are worse than open enemies.

63:5
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا۟ يَسْتَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ لَوَّوْا۟ رُءُوسَهُمْ وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ وَهُم مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ Wai tha qeela lahum taAA a law yastaghfir lakum rasoolu All a hi lawwaw ruoosahum waraaytahum ya s uddoona wahum mustakbiroon a
for, when they are told, "Come, the Apostle of God will pray [unto God] that you be forgiven", they turn their heads away, and thou canst see how they draw back in their false pride.

When it is said to them: "Come, the Rasool of Allah will pray for your forgiveness," they shake their heads and you see them turning away with arrogance.

When it is said to them, 'Come! The Messenger of Allah will pray for you to be forgiven,' they turn their heads 'in disgust', and you see them 'O Prophet' turn away in arrogance.

And when it is said unto them: Come! The messenger of Allah will ask forgiveness for you! they avert their faces and thou seest them turning away, disdainful.

And when it is said to them "Come the Apostle of Allah will pray for your forgiveness" they turn aside their heads and thou wouldst see them turning away their faces in arrogance. 5472

Even hypocrisy like other sins can be forgiven by repentance and amendment, provided there is a will and earnest desire to turn from evil and seek the Grace of Allah. In this case there was none.

63:6
سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ لَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ لَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ Saw a on AAalayhim astaghfarta lahum am lam tastaghfir lahum lan yaghfira All a hu lahum inna All a ha l a yahdee alqawma alf a siqeen a
As for them, it is all the same whether thou dost pray that they be forgiven or dost not pray for them: God will not forgive them - for, behold, God does not bestow His guidance upon such iniquitous folk.7

It is the same, whether you pray for their forgiveness or not, Allah is not going to forgive them. Surely Allah does not guide the transgressors.

Whether thou ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them, Allah will not forgive them. Lo! Allah guideth not the evil-living folk.

It is equal to them whether thou pray for their forgiveness or not. Allah will not forgive them. Truly Allah guides not rebellious transgressors. 5473

The stiff-necked rejecters of Allah's Truth have made a wide gulf between themselves and Allah's Grace. No prayer for them will help them. In the attitude of rebellion and transgression they cannot obtain Allah's forgiveness.

63:7
هُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنفِقُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ حَتَّىٰ يَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗ وَلِلَّهِ خَزَآئِنُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ Humu alla th eena yaqooloona l a tunfiqoo AAal a man AAinda rasooli All a hi h att a yanfa dd oo walill a hi khaz a inu a l ssam a w a ti wa a lar d i wal a kinna almun a fiqeena l a yafqahoon a
It is they who say [to their compatriots8], "Do not spend anything on those who are with God's Apostle, so that they [may be forced to] leave."9 However, unto God belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth: but this truth the hypocrites cannot grasp.

I.e., to the people of Medina in general, and to the ansar in particular (see next note).

The leader of the hypocrites of Medina, 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy, never forgave the Prophet for having overshadowed him who previously had been unquestioningly recognized by the people of Medina as their most outstanding leader. Since the Prophet's political strength depended mainly on the Meccan Muslims who followed him in his hijrah to Medina, Ibn Ubayy tried to persuade his compatriots - many of whom were supporting the newcomers with all the means at their disposal - to withdraw this material support and thereby force the muhajirun, most of whom were very poor, to leave Medina: a stratagem which, if successful, would have greatly weakened the Prophet's position. This suggestion of the leader of the hypocrites was, of course, rejected by the ansar.

They are the same people who say: "Do not give anything to those who follow the Rasool of Allah until they have deserted him." To Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites cannot understand.

They are the ones who say 'to one another', 'Do not spend 'anything' on those 'emigrants' with the Messenger of Allah so that they will break away 'from him'.' But to Allah 'alone' belong the treasuries of the heavens and the earth, yet the hypocrites do not comprehend.

They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.

They are the ones who say "Spend nothing on those who are with Allah's Apostle to the end that they may disperse (and quit Madinah). But to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the Hypocrites understand not. 5474

The Muhajirun, who had come to be with the holy Prophet in Madinah in exile, were received, helped, entertained by the Ansar (Helpers). The Hypocrites in Madinah did not like this, and tried in underhand ways to dissuade the good folk of Madinah from doing all they could for the exiles. But their tricks did not succeed. The small Muslim communirty grew from strength to strength until they were able to stand on their own resources and greatly to augment the resources of their hosts as well. It is goodness that produces strength and prosperity, and Allah holds the keys of the treasures of man's well-being. It is not for Allah's enemies to dole out or withhold the unbounded treasures of Allah.

63:8
يَقُولُونَ لَئِن رَّجَعْنَآ إِلَى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ ٱلْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا ٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚ وَلِلَّهِ ٱلْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ Yaqooloona lain rajaAAn a il a almadeenati layukhrijanna alaAAazzu minh a ala th alla walill a hi alAAizzatu walirasoolihi walilmumineena wal a kinna almun a fiqeena l a yaAAlamoon a
[And] they say, "Indeed, when we return to the City,10 [we,] the ones most worthy of honour, will surely drive out therefrom those most contemptible ones!" However, all honour belongs to God, and [thus] to His Apostle and those who believe [in God]: but of this the hypocrites are not aware.11

I.e., Medina, the "City of the Prophet" (Madinat an-Nabi), as the town previously called Yathrib began to be known after the hijrah. Since - as it is established through several ahadith - the subsequent saying was uttered by 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy during the campaign against the tribe of Banu Mustaliq in 5 H., it is obvious that verses {7} and {8} were revealed at the same date or a little later.

It is in these two Qur'anic statements - "unto God belong the treasures...", etc., and "all honour belongs to God...", etc. - that the real, lasting purport of the above historical allusions is to be found.

They say: "When we return to Madinah, the honorable ones will soon drive out the mean ones." But the honor belongs to Allah, to His Rasool and to the believers; but the hypocrites do not know.

They say, 'If we return to Medina, the honourable will definitely expel the inferior.' But all honour and power belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know.

They say: Surely, if we return to Al Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and the believers; but the hypocrites know not.

They say "If we return to Madinah surely the more honorable (element) will expel there from the meaner." But honor belongs to Allah and His Apostle and to the Believers; but the Hypocrites know not. 5475

Words of this import were spoken by 'Abdullah ibn Ubai, the leader of the Madinah Hypocrites, to or about the Exiles, in the course of the expedition against the Banu Mustaliq in the fourth or fifth year of the Hijra. He had hopes of leadership which were disappointed by the coming to Madinah of a man far greater than he. So he arrogated to himself and his clique the title of "the more honourable (element)" and slightingly spoke of the Emigrants as the "meaner" element that had intruded from outside.

63:9
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ Y a ayyuh a alla th eena a manoo l a tulhikum amw a lukum wal a awl a dukum AAan th ikri All a hi waman yafAAal tha lika faol a ika humu alkh a siroon a
O YOU who have attained to faith! Let not your worldly goods or your children make you oblivious of the remembrance of God: for if any behave thus - it is they, they who are the losers!

O believers! Let neither your riches nor your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. Those who will do so, it is they who shall be the real losers.

O believers! Do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. For whoever does so, it is they who are the 'true' losers.

O ye who believe! Let not your wealth nor your children distract you from remembrance of Allah. Those who do so, they are the losers.

O ye who believe! let not your riches or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. If any act thus the loss is their own. 5476

Riches and human resources of all kinds are but fleeting sources of enjoyment. They should not turn away the good man from his devotion to Allah. "Remembrance of Allah" includes every act of service and goodness, every kind thought and kind deed, for this is the service and sacrifice which Allah requires of us. If we fail in this, the loss is our own, not any one else's: for it stunts our own spiritual growth.

63:10
وَأَنفِقُوا۟ مِن مَّا رَزَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِىَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ فَيَقُولَ رَبِّ لَوْلَآ أَخَّرْتَنِىٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ قَرِيبٍ فَأَصَّدَّقَ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ Waanfiqoo min m a razaqn a kum min qabli an yatiya a h adakumu almawtu fayaqoola rabbi lawl a akhkhartanee il a ajalin qareebin faa ss addaqa waakun mina a l ssa li h een a
And spend on others out of what We have provided for you as sustenance,12 ere there come a time when death approaches any of you, and he then says, "O my Sustainer! If only Thou wouldst grant me a delay for a short while,13 so that I could give in charity and be among the righteous!"

Lit., "for (ila) a term close by".64_1 The above construction, pointing to man's acceptance or denial of the truth of God's creative activity, is in accord with Tabari's interpretation of this passage, as well as with that of Az-Zajjaj (quoted by Razi). According to Zamakhshari, those who deny this truth are mentioned first because they are more numerous and possess greater influence than those who consciously believe in God. A further implication appears to be this: Since all human beings are endowed with the instinctive ability to perceive the existence of the Creator (cf. 7:172 and the corresponding note [139]), one man's denial of this truth and another's belief in it is, in the last resort, an outcome of free choice.

Spend, in charity and in the Cause of Allah, out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on you before that time when death will come to anyone of you, and he shall say: "O my Rabb! If only you would reprieve me for a little while then I would give out everything in charity, and be among the righteous."

And donate from what We have provided for you before death comes to one of you, and you cry, 'My Lord! If only You delayed me for a short while, I would give in charity and be one of the righteous.'

And spend of that wherewith We have provided you before death cometh unto one of you and he saith: My Lord! If only thou wouldst reprieve me for a little while, then I would give alms and be among the righteous.

And spend something (in charity) out of the substance which We have bestowed on you before death should come to any of you and he should say "O my Lord! why didst thou not give me respite for a little while? I should then have given (largely) in charity and I should have been one of the doers of good." 5477

"Substance" or "Sustenance". Whatever good we enjoy comes from Allah, and it is our duty to use some of it in the service of others, for that is Charity and the service of Allah. Every unselfish act is Charity. And we must not postpone our good resolutions to the future. Death may come suddenly on us, and we cannot then be allowed to plead for more time. Every present moment calls urgently for its good deed.

وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهَا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ Walan yuakhkhira All a hu nafsan i tha j a a ajaluh a wa A ll a hu khabeerun bim a taAAmaloon a
But never does God grant a delay to a human being when his term has come; and God is fully aware of all that you do.

When our limited period of probation is over, we cannot justly ask for more time, nor will more time be given to us then. Procrastination is itself a fault, and Allah knows every hidden thought and motive in our minds.
