هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ Hayh a ta hayh a ta lim a tooAAadoon a
Far-fetched, far-fetched indeed is what you are promised!

إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ In hiya ill a h ay a tun a a l dduny a namootu wana h y a wam a na h nu bimabAAootheen a
There is no life beyond our life in this world: we die and we live [but once], and we shall never be raised from the dead!

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ ٱفْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا وَمَا نَحْنُ لَهُۥ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ In huwa ill a rajulun iftar a AAal a All a hi ka th iban wam a na h nu lahu bimumineen a
He is nothing but a man who attributes his own lying inventions to God, and we are not going to believe him!"

This man is but an impostor, forging a lie against Allah, and we are not going to believe him."

He is no more than a man who has fabricated a lie about Allah, and we will never believe in him.'

23:39
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرْنِى بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ Q a la rabbi on s urnee bim a ka thth aboon i
[Whereupon the prophet] would say: "O my Sustainer! Succour me against their accusation of lying!

At this the Rasool prayed: "O my Rabb! Help me against their calling me a liar."

The messenger prayed, 'My Lord! Help me, because they have denied 'me'.'

23:40
قَالَ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ لَّيُصْبِحُنَّ نَـٰدِمِينَ Q a la AAamm a qaleelin layu s bi h unna n a dimeen a
[And God] would say: "After a little while they will surely be smitten with remorse!"19

Lit., "they will surely become of those who feel remorse".

Allah responded: "After a short time they will surely be sorry."

Allah responded, 'Soon they will be truly regretful.'

He said: In a little while they surely will become repentant.

(Allah) said: "In but a little while they are sure to be sorry!" 2899

When the Punishment comes, they will be sorry for themselves, but it will be too late then.

23:41
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ غُثَآءً ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ Faakha th athumu a l ss ay h atu bi a l h aqqi fajaAAaln a hum ghuth a an fabuAAdan lilqawmi a l thth a limeen a
And then the blast [of Our punishment] over-took them, justly and unavoidably,20 and We caused them to become as the flotsam of dead leaves and the scum borne on the surface of a torrent: and so - away with those evildoing folk!

The expression bi'l-haqq (lit., "in accordance with truth" or "with justice") combines in this instance the concepts of justice, wisdom, reality, inescapability, and consonance with the exigencies of the case under consideration (Raghib), and can be only approximately rendered in translation.

So the Blast overtook them in all justice and We swept them away like the rubbish of dead leaves - so gone is the nation of wrongdoers.

Then the 'mighty' blast overtook them with justice, and We reduced them to rubble. So away with the wrongdoing people!

So the (Awful) Cry overtook them rightfully, and We made them like as wreckage (that a torrent hurleth). A far removal for wrongdoing folk!

ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِمْ قُرُونًا ءَاخَرِينَ Thumma anshan a min baAAdihim quroonan a khareen a
AND AFTER them We gave rise to new genera-tions:21

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ M a tasbiqu min ommatin ajalah a wam a yastakhiroon a
[for,] no community can ever forestall [the end of] its term - and neither can they delay [its coming].22

23:44
ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتْرَا ۖ كُلَّ مَا جَآءَ أُمَّةً رَّسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُ ۚ فَأَتْبَعْنَا بَعْضَهُم بَعْضًا وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ أَحَادِيثَ ۚ فَبُعْدًا لِّقَوْمٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ Thumma arsaln a rusulan a tatr a kulla m a j a a ommatan rasooluh a ka thth aboohu faatbaAAn a baAA d ahum baAA d an wajaAAaln a hum a ha deetha fabuAAdan liqawmin l a yuminoon a
And We sent forth Our apostles, one after another: [and] every time their apostle came to a community, they gave him the lie: and so We caused them to follow one another [into the grave], and let them become [mere] tales: and so - away with the folk who, would not believe!

- and sent forth Our Rasools one after another: every time a Rasool came to his people, they disbelieved him, so We punished them one by one and made them a history; so gone is the nation of disbelievers.

Then We sent Our messengers in succession: whenever a messenger came to his people, they denied him. So We destroyed them, one after the other, reducing them to 'cautionary' tales. So away with the people who refuse to believe!

Then We sent our messengers one after another. Whenever its messenger came unto a nation they denied him; so We caused them to follow one another (to disaster) and We made them bywords. A far removal for folk who believe not!

Then sent We Our apostles in succession: every time there came to a people their apostle they accused him of falsehood: so We made them follow each other (in punishment): We made them as a tale (that is told): so away with a people that will not believe! 2902

Their habitations and their organisation have been wiped out. What remains is merely a vague story of their existence, a tale that is told. Where their name remains, which is not always the case, it is only a by-word, suggesting all that is unstable and ephemeral,-"to point a moral and adorn a tale".

ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَأَخَاهُ هَـٰرُونَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ Thumma arsaln a moos a waakh a hu h a roona bi a y a tin a wasul ta nin mubeen in
AND THEN We sent forth Moses and his brother Aaron with Our messages and a manifest authority [from Us]

Then We sent Musa (Moses) and his brother Haroon (Aaron) with Our signs and clear authority,

Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs1 and compelling proof

 The nine signs are: the staff, the hand (both mentioned in 20:17-22), famine, shortage of crops, floods, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood (all mentioned in 7:130-133).

Moses and Aaron had a twofold mission: (1) to Pharaoh and his Court, which failed because of Egyptian arrogance; (2) to the Israelites, for whom the Law was received on Mount Sinai, but they repeatedly rebelled against Allah. In both cases there were miracles ("Clear Signs") and other proofs which showed that they came at Allah's command and were inspired by His authority.

23:46
إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا عَالِينَ Il a firAAawna wamalaihi fa i stakbaroo wak a noo qawman AA a leen a
unto Pharaoh and his great ones;23 but these behaved with arrogance, for they were people wont to glorify [only] themselves.

Moses and Aaron are mentioned here by name because their case was different from that of all other prophets: they were rejected not by their own community but by their community's oppressors.

to Fir'on (Pharaoh) and his chiefs: but they received them with arrogance for they were very haughty people.

to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they behaved arrogantly and were a tyrannical people.

Unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they scorned (them) and they were despotic folk.

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَنُؤْمِنُ لِبَشَرَيْنِ مِثْلِنَا وَقَوْمُهُمَا لَنَا عَـٰبِدُونَ Faq a loo anuminu libasharayni mithlin a waqawmuhum a lan a AA a bidoon a
And so they said: "Shall we believe [them-] two mortals like ourselves - although their people are our slaves?"

They said: "What! Should we believe in two human beings like ourselves, and whose people are our slaves?"

They argued, 'Will we believe in two humans, like ourselves, whose people are slaves to us?'

And they said: Shall we put faith in two mortals like ourselves, and whose folk are servile unto us?

They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves? And their people are subject to us!" 2904

Racial arrogance made the Egyptians say, 'These men belong to a race which we hold in subjection as our slaves: how can we accept them as messengers of Allah?'

فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَكَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْلَكِينَ Faka thth aboohum a fak a noo mina almuhlakeen a
Thus, they gave the lie to those two, and earned [thereby] their place among the doomed:24

Lit., "became of those who were destroyed".

So they disbelieved both of them and became among those who were destroyed.

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ Walaqad a tayn a moos a alkit a ba laAAallahum yahtadoon a
for. indeed. We had vouchsafed revelation unto Moses in order that they might find the right way.

And We gave Musa the Book, so that his people might be rightly guided.

And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so perhaps his people would be 'rightly' guided.

And we verily gave Moses the Scripture, that haply they might go aright.

Here the reference is to the second part of the mission of Moses, that to the Israelites, which the Israelites rendered ineffective by their want of faith. See n. 2903 above.

23:50
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَأُمَّهُۥٓ ءَايَةً وَءَاوَيْنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَىٰ رَبْوَةٍ ذَاتِ قَرَارٍ وَمَعِينٍ Wa ja'alnab na Maryama wa ummahooo aayatannw wa aawainaahumaaa ilaa rabwatin zaati qaraarinw wa ma'een (section 3)
And [as We exalted Moses, so, too,] We made the son of Mary and his mother a symbol [of Our grace],25 and provided for both an abode in a lofty mace of lasting restfulness and unsullied springs,26

For my rendering of the ayah, in this instance, as "symbol", see surah {19}, note [16]. Jesus and his mother Mary are mentioned here specifically because they, too, had to suffer persecution and slander at the hands of "those who were bent on denying the truth".

I.e., in paradise. The expression ma'in signifies "unsullied springs" or "running waters" (Ibn 'Abbas, as quoted by Tabari; also Lisan al-'Arab and Taj al-'Arus), and thus symbolizes the spiritual purity associated with the concept of paradise, the "gardens through which running waters flow".

And We made the son of Maryam (Jesus) and his mother a sign for mankind, and gave them a shelter on a peaceful lofty ground, furnished with a fresh spring.

And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and gave them refuge on high ground- a 'suitable' place for rest with flowing water.

And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and water springs.

The virgin birth of Jesus was a miracle both for him and his mother. She was falsely accused of unchastity, but the child Jesus triumphantly vindicated her by his own miracles (xix. 27-33), and showed by his life the meanness of the calumny against his mother.

There is no need to look far for the place where mother and child were given secure shelter. It is described in xix. 22-26. It was the place to which she withdrew to be delivered when the time drew near. There was a fruitful palm-tree, evidently on high ground, for beneath it flowed a spring. She retired there in seclusion, and she and her child rested there until it was time for her to go to her people with her child.
