25:56
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا Wam a arsaln a ka ill a mubashshiran wana th eer a n
Yet [withal, O Prophet,] We have sent thee only as a herald of glad tidings and a warner.

But O Muhammad! We have sent you only to proclaim good news and to give warning.

And We have sent you 'O Prophet' only as a deliverer of good news and a warner.

25:57
قُلْ مَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ إِلَّا مَن شَآءَ أَن يَتَّخِذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا Qul m a asalukum AAalayhi min ajrin ill a man sh a a an yattakhi th a il a rabbihi sabeel a n
Say: "For this, no reward do I ask of you [- no reward] other than that he who so wills may unto his Sustainer find a way!"

Say: "I ask of you no recompense for this work except that he who wants, may take a the Right Way to his Rabb."

Say, 'I do not ask you for any reward for this 'message', but whoever wishes, let them pursue the Way to their Lord.'

Say: I ask of you no reward for this, save that whoso will may choose a way unto his Lord.

25:58
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْحَىِّ ٱلَّذِى لَا يَمُوتُ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِۦ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِيرًا Watawakkal AAal a al h ayyi alla th ee l a yamootu wasabbi h bi h amdihi wakaf a bihi bi th unoobi AAib a dihi khabeer a n
Hence, place thy trust in the Living One who dies not, and extol His limitless glory and praise: for none is as aware of His creatures' sins as He -

Put your trust in the Ever-Living (Allah) Who never dies: celebrate His praise, for He Alone is sufficient to be aware of the sins of His servants.

Put your trust in the Ever-Living, Who never dies, and glorify His praises. Sufficient is He as All-Aware of the sins of His servants.

And trust thou in the Living One Who dieth not, and hymn His praise. He sufficeth as the Knower of His bondmen's sins,

And put thy trust in Him Who lives and dies not; and celebrate His praise; and enough is He to be acquainted with the faults of His servants 3116

Allah knows our faults better than we or anyone else. It is no use hiding anything from Him. We must put our trust completely in Him. His care is for all, and He is Allah Most Gracious.

25:59
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۚ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ فَسْـَٔلْ بِهِۦ خَبِيرًا Alla th ee khalaqa a l ssam a w a ti wa a lar d a wam a baynahum a fee sittati ayy a min thumma istaw a AAal a alAAarshi a l rra h m a nu fa i sal bihi khabeer a n
He who has created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six aeons, and is established on the throne of His almightiness: 46 the Most Gracious! Ask, then, about Him, Ithel One who is[truly] aware.47

I.e., "ask God Himself": since He alone holds the keys to the mysteries of the universe, it is only by observing His creation and listening to His revealed messages that man can obtain a glimpse, however distant, of God's Own reality.

The One Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six days, and is firmly established on the Throne of authority; the Compassionate (Allah): as to His Glory, ask the one who knows.

'He is' the One Who created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six Days,1 then established Himself on the Throne. 'He is' the Most Compassionate! Ask 'none other than' the All-Knowledgeable about Himself.

Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six Days, then He mounted the Throne. The Beneficent! Ask any one informed concerning Him!

The argument is about the question, in whom shall we put our trust? Worldly men put their trust in wordly things: the righteous man only in Allah. The true distinction will be quite clear from a ray of divine knowledge. If you do not see it all clearly, ask of those who possess such knowledge.

25:60
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ أَنَسْجُدُ لِمَا تَأْمُرُنَا وَزَادَهُمْ نُفُورًا ۩ Wai tha qeela lahumu osjudoo li l rra h m a ni q a loo wam a a l rra h m a nu anasjudu lim a tamurun a waz a dahum nufoor a n
Yet when they [who are bent on denying the truth] are told, "Prostrate yourselves before the Most Gracious," they are wont to ask, "And [who and] what is the Most Gracious? Are we to prostrate ourselves before whatever thou biddest us [to worship]?"- and so [thy call] but increases their aversion.

When it is said to them, "Prostrate yourselves before the Most Compassionate," they ask: "Who is that Most Compassionate? Are we to prostrate just because you order us to?" It merely increase their disdain.

When it is said to them, 'Prostrate to the Most Compassionate,' they ask 'in disgust', 'What is 'the Most Compassionate'? Will we prostrate to whatever you order us to?' And it only drives them farther away.

And when it is said unto them: Adore the Beneficent! they say: And what is the Beneficent? Are we to adore whatever thou (Muhammad) biddest us? And it increaseth aversion in them.

When it is said to them "Adore ye (Allah) Most Gracious!" they say "And what is (Allah) Most Gracious? Shall we adore that which thou commandest us?" and it increases their flight (from the Truth). 3120

Those who have no spiritual Light cannot understand this precept about putting all our trust in Allah. It seems to them foolish. They have no faith, or but a superficial faith. They may possibly take the name of Allah on their lips, but they cannot understand the full significance of His title of Rahman (Most Gracious). Perhaps they are afraid on account of their sins; perhaps they do not see how unbounded is the mercy of Allah. Such men are contrasted against the true servants of Allah, who are described below in xxv. 63-75.

25:61
تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا سِرَٰجًا وَقَمَرًا مُّنِيرًا Tab a raka alla th ee jaAAala fee a l ssam a i buroojan wajaAAala feeh a sir a jan waqamaran muneer a n
HALLOWED is He who has set up in the skies great constellations, and has placed among them a [radiant] lamp and a light-giving moon.48

Blessed is the One Who has decked the sky with constellations and placed in it a lamp and a shining moon.

Blessed is the One Who has placed constellations in the sky, as well as a 'radiant' lamp1 and a luminous moon.

Blessed be He Who hath placed in the heaven mansions of the stars, and hath placed therein a great lamp and a moon giving light!

The glorious Lamp of the skies is the Sun; and next to him is the Moon, which gives borrowed light. The Constellations of course include the Signs of the Zodiac, which mark the path of the planets in the heavens.

25:62
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ خِلْفَةً لِّمَنْ أَرَادَ أَن يَذَّكَّرَ أَوْ أَرَادَ شُكُورًا Wahuwa alla th ee jaAAala allayla wa al nnah a ra khilfatan liman ar a da an ya thth akkara aw ar a da shukoor a n
And He it is who causes the night and the day to succeed one another, [revealing Himself in His works] unto him who has the will to take thought-that is,49 has the will to be grateful.

Lit., "or" (aw) - a particle which obviously does not denote here an alternative but, rather, an explanatory amplification, similar to the expression "in other words".

He is the One Who has caused the night and the day to succeed each other, for him who desires to learn a lesson or desires to render thanks.

And He is the One Who causes the day and the night to alternate, 'as a sign' for whoever desires to be mindful or to be grateful.

And He it is Who hath appointed night and day in succession, for him who desireth to remember, or desireth thankfulness.

And it is He Who made the Night and the Day to follow each other: for such as have the will to celebrate His praises or to show their gratitude. 3122

The scenes of the phenomenal world are Signs of the Self-Revelation of Allah, for those who understand and who have the will to merge their wills in His. This they do (1) by praising Him, which means understanding something of His nature, and (2) by gratitude to Him, which means carrying out His Will, and doing good to their fellow-creatures. These two attitudes of mind and heart give rise to various consequences in their lives, which are detailed in the following verse.

25:63
وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ ٱلْجَـٰهِلُونَ قَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا WaAAib a du a l rra h m a ni alla th eena yamshoona AAal a alar d i hawnan wai tha kh at abahumu alj a hiloona q a loo sal a m a n
For, [true] servants of the Most Gracious are [only] they who walk gently on earth, and who, whenever the foolish address them,50 reply with [words of] peace;

Sc., "with the aim to ridicule them or to argue against their beliefs".

True servants of the Compassionate (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and when the ignorant people address them, they say: "Peace;"

The 'true' servants of the Most Compassionate are those who walk on the earth humbly, and when the foolish address them 'improperly', they only respond with peace.

The (faithful) slaves of the Beneficent are they who walk upon the earth modestly, and when the foolish ones address them answer: Peace;

And the servants of (Allah) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility and when the ignorant address them they say "Peace!" 3123

Ignorant: in a moral sense. Address: in the aggressive sense. Their humility is shown in two ways: (1) to those in real search of knowledge, they give such knowledge as they have and as the recipients can assimilate; (2) to those who merely dispute, they do not speak harshly, but say "Peace!", as much as to say, "May it be well with you, may you repent and be better"; or "May Allah give me peace from such wrangling"; or "Peace, and Good-bye; let me leave you!"

25:64
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًا وَقِيَـٰمًا Wa a lla th eena yabeetoona lirabbihim sujjadan waqiy a m a n
and who remember their Sustainer far into the night, prostrating themselves and standing;

who pass the night prostrating before their Rabb and standing in prayers;

'They are' those who spend 'a good portion of' the night, prostrating themselves and standing before their Lord.

And who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing,

Those who spend the night in adoration of their Lord prostrate and standing; 3124

Humble prayer brings them nearer to Allah.

25:65
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا Wa a lla th eena yaqooloona rabban a i s rif AAann a AAa tha ba jahannama inna AAa tha bah a k a na ghar a m a n
and who pray: "O our Sustainer, avert from us the suffering of hell - for, verily, the suffering caused by it is bound to be a torment dire:

who say: "Our Rabb! Ward off the punishment of hell from us, for its punishment is atrocious

'They are' those who pray, 'Our Lord! Keep the punishment of Hell away from us, for its punishment is indeed unrelenting.

And who say: Our Lord! Avert from us the doom of hell; lo! the doom thereof is anguish;

Those who say "Our Lord! avert from us the Wrath of Hell for its Wrath is indeed an affliction grievous 3125

This is a prayer of humility: such a person relies, not on any good works which he may have done, but on the Grace and Mercy of Allah; and he shows a lively sense of the Day of Judgment, when every action will weigh for or against a soul.

25:66
إِنَّهَا سَآءَتْ مُسْتَقَرًّا وَمُقَامًا Innah a s a at mustaqarran wamuq a m a n
verily, how evil an abode and a station!"-;

- certainly it is an evil abode and an evil resting place;"

It is certainly an evil place to settle and reside.'

Lo! it is wretched as abode and station;

The misery which results from sin is not only grievous to live in ("an abode") but also grievous "to rest in" or "to stand in", if it be only for a short time.

25:67
وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَنفَقُوا۟ لَمْ يُسْرِفُوا۟ وَلَمْ يَقْتُرُوا۟ وَكَانَ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ قَوَامًا Wa a lla th eena i tha anfaqoo lam yusrifoo walam yaqturoo wak a na bayna tha lika qaw a m a n
and who, whenever they spend on others,51 are neither wasteful nor niggardly but [remember that] there is always a just mean between those [two extremes];

In the Qur'an, the verb anfaqa (and the corresponding noun nafaqah) has usually this connotation.

who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but keep the balance between those two extremes;

'They are' those who spend neither wastefully nor stingily, but moderately in between.

And those who, when they spend, are neither prodigal nor grudging; and there is ever a firm station between the two;

In ordinary spending this is a wise rule. But even in charity, in which we give of our best, it is not expected that we should be extravagant, i.e., that we should either do it for show, to impress other people, or do it thoughtlessly, which would be the case if we "rob Peter to pay Paul". We should certainly not be niggardly, but we should remember everyone's rights, including our own, and strike a perfectly just balance between them.

25:68
وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ ٱلنَّفْسَ ٱلَّتِى حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا Wa a lla th eena l a yadAAoona maAA a All a hi il a han a khara wal a yaqtuloona a l nnafsa allatee h arrama All a hu ill a bi a l h aqqi wal a yaznoona waman yafAAal tha lika yalqa ath a m a n
and who never invoke any [imaginary] deity side by side with God, and do not take any human being's life-[the life] which God has willed to be sacred-otherwise than in [the pursuit of] justice,52 and do not commit adultery. And [know that] he who commits aught thereof53 shall [not only] meet with a full requital

who do not invoke any other god besides Allah, nor kill any soul which Allah has made sacred, except for a just cause, nor commit fornication - he that does this shall be punished for his sin,

'They are' those who do not invoke any other god besides Allah, nor take a 'human' life- made sacred by Allah- except with 'legal' right,1 nor commit fornication. And whoever does 'any of' this will face the penalty.

 For example, in retaliation for intentional killing through legal channels.

And those who cry not unto any other god along with Allah, nor take the life which Allah hath forbidden save in (course of) justice, nor commit adultery and whoso doeth this shall pay the penalty;

Those who invoke not with Allah any other god nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause not commit fornication and any that does this (not only) meets punishment 3128

Here three things are expressly condemned: (1) false worship, which is a crime against Allah; (2) the taking of life, which is a crime against our fellow-creatures; and (3) fornication, which is a crime against our self-respect, against ourselves. Every crime is against Allah, His creatures, and ourselves, but some may be viewed more in relation to one than to another. The prohibition against taking life is qualified: "except for just cause,": e.g., in judicial punishment for murder, or in self-preservation, which may include not only self-defence in the legal sense, but also the clearing out of pests, and the provision of meat under conditions of Halal.- see n. 698 to v. 5. After this comes a long parenthesis, which ends with verse 71 below.

25:69
يُضَـٰعَفْ لَهُ ٱلْعَذَابُ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ وَيَخْلُدْ فِيهِۦ مُهَانًا Yu da AAaf lahu alAAa tha bu yawma alqiy a mati wayakhlud feehi muh a n a n
[but] shall have his suffering doubled on Resurrection Day: for on that [Day] he shall abide in ignominy.

and his punishment shall be doubled on the Day of Resurrection and in disgrace he shall abide forever,

Their punishment will be multiplied on the Day of Judgment, and they will remain in it forever, in disgrace.

The doom will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein disdained for ever;

(But) the Penalty on the Day of Judgment will be doubled to him and he will dwell therein in ignominy 3129

The three crimes just mentioned are specially detestable and infamous, and as ignominy will be added to other punishments, the penalty will be double that of ordinary punishment.

25:70
إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَـٰلِحًا فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ ٱللَّهُ سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ حَسَنَـٰتٍ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا Ill a man t a ba wa a mana waAAamila AAamalan sa li h an faol a ika yubaddilu All a hu sayyi a tihim h asan a tin wak a na All a hu ghafooran ra h eem a n
Excepted, however, shall be they who repent and attain to faith and do righteous deeds: for it is they whose [erstwhile] bad deeds God will transform into good ones - seeing that God is indeed much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace,

except the one who repents, becomes a true believer, and starts doing good deeds, for then Allah will change his evil deeds into good, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

As for those who repent, believe, and do good deeds, they are the ones whose evil deeds Allah will change into good deeds. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Save him who repenteth and believeth and doth righteous work; as for such, Allah will change their evil deeds to good deeds. Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

Unless he repents believes and works righteous deeds for Allah will change the evil of such persons into good and Allah is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful 3130

But even in the case of great crimes, if there is true repentance as tested by a changed fife in conduct, Allah's Mercy is available, and it will transform the repentant's nature from evil to good.

وَمَن تَابَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا فَإِنَّهُۥ يَتُوبُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَتَابًا Waman t a ba waAAamila sa li h an fainnahu yatoobu il a All a hi mat a b a n
and seeing that he who repents and [thenceforth] does what is right has truly turned unto God by [this very act of] repentance.

He that repents and does good deeds, has truly turned to Allah with good turning.

And whoever repents and does good has truly turned to Allah properly.

25:72
وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَشْهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِٱللَّغْوِ مَرُّوا۟ كِرَامًا Wa a lla th eena l a yashhadoona a l zzoora wai tha marroo bi a llaghwi marroo kir a m a n
And [know that true servants of God are only] those who never bear witness to what is false,54 and [who], whenever they pass by [people engaged in] frivolity, pass on with dignity;

Implying that neither do they themselves ever bear false witness (i.e., in the widest sense of this expression, tell any lie), nor do they knowingly take part in anything that is based on falsehood (Razi).

Those are the ones who do not bear witness to falsehood and, if they ever pass by futility, pass with dignity.

'They are' those who do not bear false witness, and when they come across falsehood, they pass 'it' by with dignity.

And those who will not witness vanity, but when they pass near senseless play, pass by with dignity.

Witness no falsehood has two significations, both implied in this passage: (1) those who give no evidence that is false; and (2) those who do not assist at anything which implies fraud or falsehood.

There is not only condemnation of positive falsehood or of being mixed up with things implying falsehood; but futilities-vain random talk, unedifying jokes, useless show, etc.-are all condemned. If a good man finds himself in such an affair, he must withdraw from it in an honourable, dignified way, not in a fussy arrogant way.

25:73
وَٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَمْ يَخِرُّوا۟ عَلَيْهَا صُمًّا وَعُمْيَانًا Wa a lla th eena i tha th ukkiroo bi a y a ti rabbihim lam yakhirroo AAalayh a s umman waAAumy a n a n
and who, whenever they are reminded of their Sustainer's messages, do not throw themselves upon them [as if] deaf and blind;55

Explaining this verse, Zamakhshari remarks that whereas the average run of people approach the divine writ with a mere outward show of eagerness, "throwing themselves upon it" for the sake of appearances but, in reality, not making the least attempt to understand the message as such and, hence, remaining deaf and blind to its contents - the truly God-conscious are deeply desirous of understanding it, and therefore "listen to it with wide-awake ears and look into it with seeing eyes".

Who, when reminded about the revelations of their Rabb, do not turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to them.

'They are' those who, when reminded of the revelation of their Lord, do not turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to it.

And those who, when they are reminded of the revelations of their Lord, fall not deaf and blind thereat.

Those who when they are admonished with the Signs of their Lord droop not down at them as if they were deaf or blind: 3133

Kharra may mean: to fall down, to snore, to droop down as if the person were bored or inattentive, or did not wish to see or hear or pay attention.

25:74
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَٱجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا Wa a lla th eena yaqooloona rabban a hab lan a min azw a jin a wa th urriyy a tin a qurrata aAAyunin wa i jAAaln a lilmuttaqeena im a m a n
and who pray: "O our Sustainer! Grant that our spouses and our offspring be a joy to our eyes,56 and cause us to be foremost among those who are conscious of Thee!"

I.e., by living a righteous life.

Who pray: "Our Rabb! Make our wives and our children to be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders of the righteous."

'They are' those who pray, 'Our Lord! Bless us with 'pious' spouses and offspring who will be the joy of our hearts, and make us models for the righteous.'

And who say: Our Lord! Vouchsafe us comfort of our wives and of our offspring, and make us patterns for (all) those who ward off (evil).
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And those who pray "Our Lord! grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous." 3134 3135

We must also pray for the maintenance of Allah's Law after us, through our wives and descendants: in our eyes they should not be mere accidents or play-things, but a real comfort and fulfilment of our spiritual longings. Perhaps, through them, as well through ourselves, we may, by Allah's grace, be able to give a lead for truth and righteousness.

Let us recapitulate the virtues of the true servants of Allah: (1) they are humble and forbearing to those below them in spiritual worth; (2) they are constantly, by adoration, in touch with Allah; (3) they always remember the Judgment in the Hereafter; (4) they are moderate in all things; (5) they avoid treason to Allah, to their fellow-creatures, and to themselves; (6) they give a wide berth not only to falsehood but to futility; (7) they pay attention, both in mind and manner, to the Signs of their Lord; (8) their ambition is to bring up their families in righteousness and to lead in all good. A fine code of individual and social ethics, a ladder of spiritual development, open to all.

25:75
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُجْزَوْنَ ٱلْغُرْفَةَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَيُلَقَّوْنَ فِيهَا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلَـٰمًا Ol a ika yujzawna alghurfata bim a s abaroo wayulaqqawna feeh a ta h iyyatan wasal a m a n
[Such as] these will be rewarded for all their patient endurance [in life] with a high station [in paradise], and will be met therein with a greeting of welcome and peace,

Such are the ones who will be rewarded with the lofty places in paradise for their patience, wherein they shall be welcomed with greetings and salutations.

It is they who will be rewarded with 'elevated' mansions 'in Paradise' for their perseverance, and will be received with salutations and 'greetings of' peace,

They will be awarded the high place forasmuch as they were steadfast, and they will meet therein with welcome and the word of peace,
