كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ Ka thth abat thamoodu almursaleen a
[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers
  - Mohammad Asad
The people of Thamud also disbelieved their Rasools.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
The people of Thamûd rejected the messengers
  - Mustafa Khattab
(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah)
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
The Thamud (people) rejected the apostles. 3203
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

For the Thamud people see n. 1043 to vii. 73. They were great builders in stone and a people with agricultural wealth, but they were an exclusive people and oppresed the poor. The point emphasised here is: "How long will your wealth last, especially if you depress your own people and dishonour Allah's Signs by sacrilege?" The insciptions on the Thamud remains of rock-cut buildings in Al-Hijr are described in the Appendix at the end of this Sura.

  - Mohammad Asad

For the story of Salih and the tribe of Thamud, see 7:73 and the corresponding note [56]; also, the version appearing in {11:61-68}.

Remember when their brother Saleh asked them: "Have you no fear of Allah?
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not fear 'Allah'?
  - Mustafa Khattab
When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)?

  - Mohammad Asad
I do not ask you any reward for my services, for my reward will be given by the Rabb of the Worlds.

"Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now?63 -
  - Mohammad Asad

Lit., "of what is here", i.e., on earth. In the original, this question has a direct form, thus: "Will you be left secure...?", etc. (See also note [69] below.)

Will you be left in peace to enjoy all that you have here forever?
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Do you think you will be 'forever' left secure in what you have here:
  - Mustafa Khattab
Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us,

  - Mohammad Asad
cornfields and palm-trees laden with juicy fruit,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
and 'various' crops, and palm trees 'loaded' with tender fruit;
  - Mustafa Khattab
And tilled fields and heavy sheathed palm trees,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
"And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 3204
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The date palm flowers on a long spathe: when the Howers develop into fruit, the heavy ones hang with the load of fruit. The Thamud evidently were proud of their skill in producing corn and fruit and in hewing fine dwellings out of rocks, like the later dwellings of Roman times in the town of Petra.

Replied he: "This she-camel66 shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor];67
  - Mohammad Asad

Cf. the second paragraph of 7:73 - "This she-camel belonging to God shall be a token for you" - and the corresponding note [57], which explains that the "token" spoken of by Salih was to consist in the manner in which the tribe would treat the animal.

Lit., "on a day appointed", which may mean either "each on a day appointed" (i.e., by turns), or, more probably - because more in consonance with the tribal customs of ancient Arabia - "on the days appointed for the watering of camels": implying that on those days the ownerless she-camel should receive a full share of water side by side with the herds and flocks belonging to the tribe.

Saleh said: "Well, here is the she-camel (the sign that you asked for). She shall have her share of water as you all have yours, each drinking on an alternate appointed day.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Salih said, 'Here is a camel. She will have her turn to drink as you have yours, each on an appointed day.
  - Mustafa Khattab
He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering and ye have a right of watering (severally) on a day appointed. 3207
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

For this she-camel, see n. 1044 to vii. 73. Thee she-camel was to be a Sign and a test-case. Would they respect her rights of watering (and pasturage)?
