بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Bismi All a hi a l rra h m a ni a l rra h eem i
IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE DISPENSER OF GRACE:1

According to most of the authorities, this invocation (which occurs at the beginning of every surah with the exception of surah 9) constitutes an integral part of "The Opening" and is, therefore, numbered as verse {1}. In all other instances, the invocation "in the name of God" precedes the surah as such, and is not counted among its verses. - Both the divine epithets rahman and rahim are derived from the noun rahmah, which signifies "mercy", "compassion", "loving tenderness" and, more comprehensively, "grace". From the very earliest times, Islamic scholars have endeavoured to define the exact shades of meaning which differentiate the two terms. The best and simplest of these explanations is undoubtedly the one advanced by Ibn al-Qayyim (as quoted in Manar I,48): the term rahman circumscribes the quality of abounding grace inherent in, and inseparable from, the concept of God's Being, whereas rahim expresses the manifestation of that grace in, and its effect upon, His creation - in other words, an aspect of His activity.

The Arabic words "Rahman" and "Rahim" translated "Most Gracious" and "Most Merciful" are both intensive forms referring to different aspects of God's attribute of Mercy. The Arabic intensive is more suited to express God's attributes than the superlative degree in English. The latter implies a comparison with other beings, or with other times or places, while there is no being like unto God, and He is independent of Time and Place. Mercy may imply pity, long-suffering, patience, and forgiveness, all of which the sinner needs and God Most Merciful bestows in abundant measure. But there is a Mercy that goes before even the need arises, the Grace which is ever watchful, and flows from God Most Gracious to all His creatures, protecting the, preserving them, guiding them, and leading them to clearer light and higher life. For this reason the attribute Rahman (Most Gracious) is not applied to any but God, but the attribute Rahim (Merciful), is a general term, and may also be applied to Men. To make us contemplate these boundless gifts of God, the formula: "In the name of God Most Gracious, Most Merciful": is placed before every Sura of the Qur-an (except the ninth), and repeated at the beginning of every act by the Muslim who dedicates his life to God, and whose hope is in His Mercy.

56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ I tha waqaAAati alw a qiAAat u
WHEN THAT which must come to pass1 [at last] comes to pass,

I.e., the Last Hour and Resurrection.

When the inevitable event will come to pass

When the Inevitable Event takes place,

When the event befalleth.

The Event Inevitable is the Hour of Judgment. People may doubt now whether it will come. But when it comes, as it will come, suddenly upon them, it will come with such tremendous reality that it will be burnt deep into the experience of every soul. No one can then be deceived or entertain false notions about it.

56:2
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ Laysa liwaqAAatih a k ath iba tun
there will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass,

- no one will be able to deny its coming to pass

then no one can deny it has come.

There is no denying that it will befall

Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.

56:3
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ Kh a fi d atun r a fiAAa tun
abasing [some], exalting [others]!

- then some shall be abased and some exalted.

It will debase 'some' and elevate 'others'.1

 Unlike this world of sheer injustice, the Hereafter will put everyone in their right place. The righteous will be elevated in Paradise, while the wicked will be humiliated in Hell.

Abasing (some), exalting (others);

(Many) will it bring low (many) will it exalt; 5223
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

There will be a sorting out of Good and Evil. Or rather, (verse 7 below), there will be three main classes. Among the Good there will be the specially exalted class, those nearest to Allah (muqarrabun, lvi. 11-26), and the righteous people generally, called the Companions of the Right Hand (Ashab-ul-maimana, lvi. 27-40). And there will be those in agony, the Companions of the Left Hand (Ashab-ul-mash-ama, lvi. 41-56). Many who were high and mighty in this life will be brought low for their sins, and many who were lowly but virtuous will be exalted to various ranks and degrees. The old landmarks will be lost in the inner world, as they will be in the outer world.

إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا I tha rujjati alar d u rajj a n
When the earth is shaken with a shaking [severe],

The earth shall be shaken with severe shaking

When the earth will be violently shaken,

When the earth is shaken with a shock

وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا Wabussati aljib a lu bass a n
and the mountains are shattered into [countless] shards,

and the mountains shall be made to crumble with awful crumbling

and the mountains will be crushed to pieces,

And the hills are ground to powder

The old physical world will disappear in the New Creation.

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا Fak a nat hab a an munbathth a n
so that they become as scattered dust -

وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً Wakuntum azw a jan thal a tha tan
[on that Day,] then, shall you be [divided into] three kinds.

Then you shall be divided into three groups:

you will 'all' be 'divided into' three groups:

And ye will be three kinds:

And ye shall be sorted out into three classes. 5225

56:8
فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ Faa s ha bu almaymanati m a a s ha bu almaymanat i
Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right:2 oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right!

those on the right hand - how blessed shall be the people of the right hand;

the people of the right, how 'blessed' will they be;

(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?

Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?

56:9
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ Waa s ha bu almashamati m a a s ha bu almashamat i
And there shall be such as will have lost themselves in evil:3 oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil!

Lit., "those [or "the people"] of the left side". Similarly to the use of the expression maymanah as a metonym for "attaining to what is right", the term mash'amah is used to denote "losing oneself in evil" (e.g., in 90:19 ). The origin of both these metonyms is based on the belief of the pre-Islamic Arabs that future events could be predicted by observing the direction of the flight of birds at certain times: if they flew to the right, the event in question promised to be auspicious; if to the left, the contrary. This ancient belief was gradually absorbed by linguistic usage, so that "right" and "left" became more or less synonymous with "auspicious" and "inauspicious". In the idiom of the Qur'an, these two concepts have been deepened into "righteousness" and unrighteousness", respectively.

those on the left hand - how damned shall be the people of the left hand;

the people of the left, how 'miserable' will they be;

And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?

And the Companions of the left hand what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?

56:10
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ Wa al ss a biqoona a l ss a biqoon a
But the foremost shall be [they who in life were] the foremost [in faith and good works]:

and foremost shall be the foremost.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
and the foremost 'in faith' will be the foremost 'in Paradise'.

And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:

And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter). 5226

Foremost (in Faith)": there are two meanings, and both are implied (1) Those who have reached the highest degree in spiritual understanding, such as the great prophets and teachers of mankind, will also take precedence in the Hereafter. (2) Those who are the first in time-the quickest and readiest-to accept Allah's Message-will have the first place in the Kingdom of Heaven. Verses 8, 9 and 10 mention the three main categories or classifications after Judgment. In the subsequent verses their happiness or misery are described. This category, Foremost in Faith, is nearest to Allah.
