أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرْعَىٰهَا Akhraja minha maa-aha wa mar 'aaha.
and has caused its waters to come out of it, and its pastures,14
  - Mohammad Asad

The term "pasture" (mar'a) connotes here, metonymically, all herbal produce suitable for consumption by man or animal (Razi).

then from it He brought forth its water and its pasture,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
bringing forth its water and pastures
  - Mustafa Khattab
And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture; 5938
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The underground springs and wells of water as well as rivers and glaciers in northren climates are due to the different levels of highlands not lowlands. They spread the moisture evenly as wanted, and give corn, fruits, and vegetables to man, and pastures and feeding grounds to beasts of the fields. For the wonderful circuit or cycle of water between heaven and earth, see notes 3106 (xxv. 49) and 3111 (xxv. 53).

and has made the mountains firm:
  - Mohammad Asad

  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
and setting the mountains firmly 'upon it'-
  - Mustafa Khattab
And He made fast the hills,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And the mountains hath He firmly fixed 5939
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

See n. 2038 to xvi. 15. The "eternal hills" are the main reservoirs for the storage and gradual distribution of water, the very basis of the life of man and beast.

مَتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ Mataa'al lakum wali an 'aamikum.
[all this] as a means of livelihood for you and your animals.15
  - Mohammad Asad

Implying (as in {80:24-32}) that man ought to be grateful to God, and should always be conscious of His being the Provider: hence the subsequent return of the discourse to the theme of resurrection and ultimate judgment.

and made them beneficial for you and your cattle.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
all as 'a means of' sustenance for you and your animals.
  - Mustafa Khattab
A provision for you and for your cattle.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 5940
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

This clause I construe to apply to verses 30, 31, and 32 above. Everything on earth has, by Allah's bountiful providence, been arranged to subserve the use and convenience of man and the lower life which depends upon him. The intermediary between Allah's providence and the actual use made of Allah's other gifts is man's own intelligence and initiative, which are also gifts of Allah.

AND SO, when the great, overwhelming event [of resurrection] comes to pass -
  - Mohammad Asad
When the great disaster will strike,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
But, when the Supreme Disaster1 comes to pass-
  - Mustafa Khattab

This is the second Blast which will cause the dead to come to life for judgment. See 39:68.

But when the great disaster cometh,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Therefore when there comes the great overwhelming (Event) 5941
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Judgment, the time for sorting out all things according to their true, intrinsic, and eternal values.

يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ Yawma yata th akkaru alins a nu m a saAA a
on that Day man will [clearly] remember all that he has ever wrought;
  - Mohammad Asad
the Day when man will call to mind all that he had striven for.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
the Day every person will remember all 'their' striving,
  - Mustafa Khattab
The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavor,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
The Day when Man shall remember (all) that he strove for 5942
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Judgment will be not only for his acts but for his motives, "all he strove for". In this life he may forget his ill-deeds, but in the new conditions he will not only remember them, but the Fire of Punishment will be plainly visible to him, and not only to him, but it will be "for all to see". This will add to the sinner's humiliation.

and the blazing fire [of hell] will be laid open before all who [are destined to] see it.16
  - Mohammad Asad

Cf. 26:91 - "will be laid open before those who had been lost in grievous error": thus reminding man that suffering in the hereafter ("hell") is the inevitable consequence of spiritual self-destruction through deliberate wrongdoing.

When hell shall be placed in full view of all,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
and the Hellfire will be displayed for all to see-
  - Mustafa Khattab
And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And Half-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see 5943
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Cf. xxvi. 91.

  - Mohammad Asad
and preferred the life of this world
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
and preferred the 'fleeting' life of this world,
  - Mustafa Khattab
And chose the life of the world,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And had preferred the life of this world 5944
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The abiding Punishment will be for those who had wilfully and persistently rebelled against Allah, "transgressing all bounds", and had given themselves up to the vanities and lusts of this lower life. This Punishment will not touch those who had repented and been forgiven, nor those guilty, through human frailty, of minor sing, whose deeds will be weighed in the balance against their good deeds: ci. 6-9.

But unto him who shall have stood in fear of his Sustainer's Presence, and held back his inner self from base desires,
  - Mohammad Asad
But he who had feared standing before his Rabb and curbed his evil desires
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
And as for those who were in awe of standing before their Lord and restrained themselves from 'evil' desires,
  - Mustafa Khattab
But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower Desires 5995
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

It is not meant for one class or race; it is universal, and is addressed to all the Worlds. For the meaning of "Worlds", see n. 20 to i. 2.

  - Mohammad Asad
They ask you about the hour: "When will it come?"
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
They ask you 'O Prophet' regarding the Hour, 'When will it be?'
  - Mustafa Khattab
They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port?
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
They ask thee about the Hour `When will be its appointed time?' 5946

Cf vii. 187 and n. 1159. Only Allah can reveal it. But were it known, "heavy were its burden through the heavens and the earth".

Lit., "wherein [or "whereon"] art thou with regard to stating it (min dhikraha)?"

But it is not for you to know or tell its timing.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
But it is not for you to tell its time.1
  - Mustafa Khattab

Another possible translation: “What is this question? You ˹O Prophet˺ are one of its signs.” It is believed—based on authentic narrations from the Prophet—that he (ﷺ) is one of the signs of the Day of Judgment.

Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof?

[seeing that] with thy Sustainer alone rests the beginning and the end [of all knowledge] thereof?18
  - Mohammad Asad

Lit., "its utmost limit", i.e., the beginning and the end of all that can be known about it.

Only your Rabb knows when it will come.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
That knowledge rests with your Lord 'alone'.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
With their Lord is the Limit fixed therefor. 5947
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Our time has no sort of comparison with the timeless state in the new spiritual World in which the final Judgment will take place. Nor can its limits-how long it will last-be set except in the Will of Almighty Allah. Lord of Supreme Wisdom, Justice, and Goodness: xi. 107-108. But it is near, in the sense explained in n. 5914 to lxxviii. 40.

Thou art but [sent] to warn those who stand in awe of it.
  - Mohammad Asad
You are but a Warner to him who fears it.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Your duty is only to warn whoever is in awe of it.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it. 5948
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The warning is only effective for those who believe in Allah and in the Final Account. Such men immediately turn in repentance to Allah, and it is to lead such men and help them, that Prophets are sent.
