Sahih Muslim Book - 21, Hadith - 3938

وَحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى أَخْبَرَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ نَافِعٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ كَانَ يُكْرِى مَزَارِعَهُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وَفِى إِمَارَةِ أَبِى بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَصَدْرًا مِنْ خِلاَفَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ حَتَّى بَلَغَهُ فِى آخِرِ خِلاَفَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ أَنَّ رَافِعَ بْنَ خَدِيجٍ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهَا بِنَهْىٍ عَنِ النَّبِىِّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَسَأَلَهُ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَنْهَى عَنْ كِرَاءِ الْمَزَارِعِ. فَتَرَكَهَا ابْنُ عُمَرَ بَعْدُ. وَكَانَ إِذَا سُئِلَ عَنْهَا بَعْدُ قَالَ زَعَمَ رَافِعُ بْنُ خَدِيجٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- نَهَى عَنْهَا.

It was narrated from Nafi' that Ibn 'Umar used to lease out his farmland at the time of the Prophet (s.a.w) and during the leadership of Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman, and the beginning of the leadership of Mu'awiyah. Until, at the end of the leadership of Mu'awiyah, he heard that Rafi' bin Khadij narrated a Hadith in which (he mentioned) it was forbidden by the Prophet (s.a.w). He entered upon him, when I was with him, and asked him. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) forbade leasing out farmland." Then Ibn 'Umar stopped doing that. When he was asked about that afterwards he said: "Rafi' bin Khadij said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) forbade it."
