40:56
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَـٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمْ ۙ إِن فِى صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَـٰلِغِيهِ ۚ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ Inna alla th eena yuj a diloona fee a y a ti All a hi bighayri sul ta nin at a hum in fee s udoorihim ill a kibrun m a hum bib a ligheehi fa i staAAi th bi A ll a hi innahu huwa a l ssameeAAu alba s eer u
Behold, as for those who call God's messages in question without having any evidence therefor39 - in their hearts is nothing but overweening self-conceit, which they will never be able to satisfy:40 seek thou, then, refuge with God-for, verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-seeing!

Lit., "which they will never [be able to] reach" or "fulfil". This is a reference to the conceit which makes many agnostics think that man is "self-sufficient" and that, therefore, there are no limits to what he may yet achieve, and no need to assume that he is responsible to a higher Power. Cf. in this connection {96:6-7}, which is one of the earliest Qur'anic revelations: "Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient." And since this "self-sufficiency" is entirely illusory, those who build their world-view on it "will never be able to satisfy their overweening conceit". (Cf. also the reference to "arrogant, self-exalting hearts" in verse {35} above.)

Those who dispute the revelations of Allah with no authority bestowed on them; they nurture in their hearts arrogant ambitions which they shall never attain. Therefore, seek refuge with Allah; It is He Who hears all and sees all.

Surely those who dispute Allah's signs- with no proof given to them- have nothing in their hearts but greed for dominance, which they will never attain. So seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah. Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.

Those who dispute about the Signs of Allah without any authority bestowed on them there is nothing in their breasts but (the quest of) greatness which they shall never attain to: seek refuge then in Allah: it is He Who hears and sees (all things). 4430

The Disputes are actuated by nothing but the desire for self-glory and self- aggrandizement. Their desire is not likely to receive fruition, but others should take warning from it.

40:57
لَخَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ Lakhalqu a l ssam a w a ti wa a lar d i akbaru min khalqi a l nn a si wal a kinna akthara a l nn a si l a yaAAlamoon a
Greater indeed than the creation of man is the creation of the heavens and the earth:41 yet most men do not understand [what this implies].

I.e., of the universe as a whole. By stressing the fact that man is only a small, insignificant part of the universe, the Qur'an points out the absurdity of the man-centred world-view alluded to in the preceding verse.

Certainly the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater task than the creation of men; yet most people do not understand.

The heavens and the earth include mankind and all other creatures and millions of stars. Man is himself but a tiny part of creation. Why should he be so ego-centric? The whole is greater than a tiny part of it. And Allah Who created the whole of the Worlds is able to do much more wonderful things than can enter the imagination of man. Why should man be arrogant and doubt the Resurrection, and take upon himself to doubt the possibility of Allah's Revelation? It is only because he has made himself blind. See next verse.

40:58
وَمَا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ وَٱلْبَصِيرُ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَلَا ٱلْمُسِىٓءُ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُونَ Wam a yastawee alaAAm a wa a lba s eeru wa a lla th eena a manoo waAAamiloo a l ssa li ha ti wal a almuseeo qaleelan m a tata th akkaroon a
But [then,] the blind and the seeing are not equal; and neither [can] they who have attained to faith and do good works and the doers of evil [be deemed equal]. How seldom do you keep this in mind!

The blind and those who can see are not alike, nor are the believers who do good deeds equal to the wicked; yet you seldom think.

Those blind 'to the truth' and those who can see are not equal, nor are those who believe and do good 'equal' to those who do evil. Yet you are hardly mindful.

And the blind man and the seer are not equal, neither are those who believe and do good works (equal with) the evil doer. Little do ye reflect!

Not equal are the blind and those who (clearly) see: nor are (equal) those who believe and work deeds of righteousness and those who do evil. Little do ye learn by admonition! 4432

The man of Faith who backs his faith by righteous conduct is like the man of clear vision, who sees things in their true perspective and walks with firm steps in the Way of Allah. The man who does evil is like a blind man: the Light of Allah is all around him, but he is blind, and he can see nothing. He has rejected Faith and cannot even learn by other people's admonition.

40:59
إِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ Inna a l ss a AAata la a tiyatun l a rayba feeh a wal a kinna akthara a l nn a si l a yuminoon a
Verily, the Last Hour is sure to come: of this there is no doubt; yet most men will not believe it.42

I.e., refuse to admit to themselves that the world as they know it could ever come to an end: which is another aspect of the "overweening conceit" spoken of in verse {56} above.

The hour of Doom is sure to come, there is no doubt about it; yet most people do not believe it.

The Hour is certainly coming, there is no doubt about it. But most people do not believe.

Lo! the Hour is surely coming, there is no doubt thereof; yet most of mankind believe not.

40:60
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِى سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ Waq a la rabbukumu odAAoonee astajib lakum inna alla th eena yastakbiroona AAan AAib a datee sayadkhuloona jahannama d a khireen a
But your Sustainer says: "Call unto Me, [and] I shall respond to you! 43 Verily, they who are too proud to worship Me will enter hell, abased!"

And your Rabb says: "Call on Me, I will answer your prayers. Surely those who are too arrogant to worship Me shall soon enter hell in humiliation."

Your Lord has proclaimed, 'Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell, fully humbled.'

As this life is not the end of all things, and we are to have its fulfilment in the Hereafter: we have only to pray to the Lord of the Present and the Hereafter, and He will hear us, forgive us, guide us, and make our Path smooth. 40:61
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا۟ فِيهِ وَٱلنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشْكُرُونَ All a hu alla th ee jaAAala lakumu allayla litaskunoo feehi wa al nnah a ra mub s iran inna All a ha la th oo fa d lin AAal a a l nn a si wal a kinna akthara a l nn a si l a yashkuroon a
IT IS GOD who has made the night for you, so that you might rest therein, and the day, to make [you] see.44 Behold, God is indeed limitless in His bounty unto man - but most men are ungrateful.

It is Allah Who has made for you the night to rest in and the day to see your way around. Surely Allah is bountiful to mankind, yet most of the people are not thankful.

It is Allah Who has made the night for you to rest in and the day bright. Surely Allah is ever Bountiful to humanity, but most people are ungrateful.

Allah it is Who hath appointed for you night that ye may rest therein, and day for seeing. Lo! Allah is a Lord of bounty for mankind, yet most of mankind give not thanks.

It is Allah Who has made the Night for you that ye may rest therein and the Day as that which helps (you) to see. Verily Allah is Full of Grace and Bounty to men: yet most men give no thanks. 4435

The succession of Day and Night in our physical life is frequently appealed to, as a symbol to draw our attention to the Mercy and Bounty of Allah. If we viewed these things aright, we should serve Allah and seek Light from Him and Rest from Him, and celebrate His praises with gratitude.

40:62
ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ لَّآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ فَأَنَّىٰ تُؤْفَكُونَ Tha likumu All a hu rabbukum kh a liqu kulli shayin l a il a ha ill a huwa faann a tufakoon a
Such is God, your Sustainer, the Creator of all that exists: there is no deity save Him. How perverted, then, are your minds!45

Sc., "O you who deny this truth!" For my above rendering of tu'fakun, see note [90] on the last sentence of 5:75 .

Such is Allah your Rabb, the Creator of all things. There is no god but Him. None has the right to be worshipped except Him, so how are you being deluded?

That is Allah, your Lord, the Creator of all things. There is no god 'worthy of worship' except Him. How can you then be deluded 'from the truth'?

Such is Allah, your Lord, the Creator of all things. There is no God save Him. How then are ye perverted?

Such is Allah your Lord the Creator of all things there is no god but He: then how ye are deluded away from the Truth! 4436

If we worship false gods, i.e., go after vanities, what is it that deludes us and leads us astray? What could it be but our rank ingratitude and failure to use the understanding which Allah has given us?

40:63
كَذَٰلِكَ يُؤْفَكُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ Ka tha lika yufaku alla th eena k a noo bi a y a ti All a hi yaj h adoon a
[For] thus it is: perverted are the minds of those who knowingly reject God's messages.46

Thus were deluded those who denied the revelations of Allah.

40:64
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ قَرَارًا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءً وَصَوَّرَكُمْ فَأَحْسَنَ صُوَرَكُمْ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۖ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ All a hu alla th ee jaAAala lakumu alar d a qar a ran wa al ssam a a bin a an wa s awwarakum faa h sana s uwarakum warazaqakum mina a l tt ayyib a ti tha likumu All a hu rabbukum fatab a raka All a hu rabbu alAA a lameen a
It is God who has made the earth a restingplace for you and the sky a canopy, and has formed you - and formed you so well47 - and provided for you sustenance out of the good things of life. Such is God, your Sustainer: hallowed, then, is God, the Sustainer of all the worlds!

I.e., in accordance with the exigencies of human life. See also note [9] on the first sentence of 7:11 .

It is Allah Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky a canopy. He has molded your bodies and molded them well, and has provided you with good things. Such is Allah your Rabb. So glory be to Allah, the Rabb of the worlds.

It is Allah Who made the earth a place of settlement for you and the sky a canopy. He shaped you 'in the womb', perfecting your form. And He has provided you with what is good and lawful. That is Allah- your Lord. So Blessed is Allah, Lord of all worlds.

Allah it is Who appointed for you the earth for a dwelling place and the sky for a canopy, and fashioned you and perfected your shapes, and hath provided you with good things. Such is Allah, your Lord. Then blessed be Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

It is Allah Who has made for you the earth as a resting place and the sky as a canopy and has given you shapes and made your shapes beautiful and has provided for you Sustenance of things pure and good such is Allah your Lord. So Glory to Allah the Lord of the Worlds! 4438 4439 4440 4441

The argument in the last two verses was from man's personal experiences of his physical life. In this and the next verse a parallel argument is addressed to man on a much higher plane: 'look at the spacious earth and the canopy of the sky; look at the special position you occupy above other animals that you know, in shape and form, and moral and spiritual capacities; consider your refinements in food and fruits and the higher spiritual Sustenance of which your physical food is a type; would you not indeed say that the Lord is good, and would you not glorify His holy name?'

A resting place: I understand this to imply a temporary place of rest or sojourn, a period of probation, to be followed by the eternal Home.

Cf. vii. 1 1 and n. 996. The shape and form refer to the physical form as well as to the inborn moral and spiritual capacities of man. As regards physical form, Cf. Milton's description of Adam and Eve, "Two of far noble shape, erect and tall" (Paradise Lost, iv. 288). As regards moral and spiritual capacities, they are typified by the breathing of Allah's spirit into man: xv. 29.

"Sustenance": all that is necessary for growth and development, physical, moral, and spiritual. Cf. n. 2105 to xvi. 73.

40:65
هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱدْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ ۗ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ Huwa al h ayyu l a il a ha ill a huwa fa o dAAoohu mukhli s eena lahu a l ddeena al h amdu lill a hi rabbi alAA a lameen a
He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity save Him: call, then, unto Him [alone], sincere in your faith in Him. All praise is due to God, the Sustainer of all the worlds!

He is the Ever-Living. There is no god but Him. Therefore call upon Him with your sincere devotion. Praise be to Allah, the Rabb of the worlds.

He is the Ever-Living. There is no god 'worthy of worship' except Him. So call upon Him with sincere devotion, 'saying,' 'All praise is for Allah- Lord of all worlds.'

He is the Living One. There is no God save Him. So pray unto Him, making religion pure for Him (only). Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

40:66
قُلْ إِنِّى نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَمَّا جَآءَنِىَ ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ مِن رَّبِّى وَأُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُسْلِمَ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ Qul innee nuheetu an aAAbuda alla th eena tadAAoona min dooni All a hi lamm a j a aniya albayyin a tu min rabbee waomirtu an oslima lirabbi alAA a lameen a
Say: "Since all evidence of the truth has come to me from my Sustainer, I am forbidden to worship [any of] those beings whom you invoke instead of God; and I am bidden to surrender myself to the Sustainer of all the worlds."

O Prophet, tell them: "I have been forbidden to invoke those whom you invoke besides Allah. How can I do this when clear revelations have come to me from my Rabb, and I have been commanded to submit myself to the Rabb of the worlds."

Say, 'O Prophet,' 'I have been forbidden to worship those 'idols' you worship besides Allah, since clear proofs have come to me from my Lord. And I have been commanded to 'fully' submit to the Lord of all worlds.'

Say (O Muhammad): I am forbidden to worship those unto whom ye cry beside Allah since there have come unto me clear proofs from my Lord, and I am commanded to surrender to the Lord of the Worlds.

Say: "I have been forbidden to invoke those whom ye invoke besides Allah seeing that the Clear Signs have come to me from my Lord: and I have been commanded to bow (in Islam) to the Lord of the Worlds." 4443

All objects of worship besides Allah are mere delusions. To any one who sees this clearly, through Allah's Self-revelations, the only possible course is to give up everything else, which his own inner experience as well as outer Revelation tell him is false or of a temporary nature, and to bring his own will and actions into complete unison with Allah's Will: for that is the meaning of Islam, bowing to the Will of Allah. When we bow to the Real and Everlasting, we are automatically saved from falling victims to the False and Evanescent.

40:67
هُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ يُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَشُدَّكُمْ ثُمَّ لِتَكُونُوا۟ شُيُوخًا ۚ وَمِنكُم مَّن يُتَوَفَّىٰ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَلِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَجَلًا مُّسَمًّى وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ Huwa alla th ee khalaqakum min tur a bin thumma min nu t fatin thumma min AAalaqatin thumma yukhrijukum t iflan thumma litablughoo ashuddakum thumma litakoonoo shuyookhan waminkum man yutawaff a min qablu walitablughoo ajalan musamman walaAAallakum taAAqiloon a
It is He who creates you out of dust,48 and then out of a drop of sperm, and then out of a germ-cell; and then He brings you forth as children; and then [He ordains] that you reach maturity, and then, that you grow old - though some of you [He causes to] die earlier-: and [all this He ordains] so that you might reach a term set [by Him],49 and that you might [learn to] use your reason.

It is He Who has created you from dust, then from a sperm, then from a leechlike mass, then He delivers you from the womb of your mother as a child, then He makes you grow to reach the age of full strength, then He makes you grow to reach an old age - though some of you die earlier - so that you may complete your appointed term and grow in wisdom.

He is the One Who created you1 from dust, then from a sperm-drop,2 then 'developed you into' a clinging clot 'of blood',3 then He brings you forth as infants, so that you may reach your prime, and become old- though some of you 'may' die sooner- reaching an appointed time, so perhaps you may understand 'Allah's power'.

 Your father, Adam.

 Nuṭfah refers to the union of male and female gametes (sperm and egg) which results in the zygote after fertilization.

 ’Alaqah, meaning the embryo resembles a leech.

He it is Who created you from dust, then from a drop (of seed) then from a clot, then bringeth you forth as a child, then (ordaineth) that ye attain full strength and afterward that ye become old men though some among you die before and that ye reach an appointed term, that haply ye may understand.

The various stages of man's physical life are: (1) first, simple matter (dust); (2) the sperm-drop in the father; (3) the fertilised ovum in the mother's womb; (4) out into the light, as a human child; (5) youth and full maturity; (6) decay; and (7) death. In some cases the later stages are curtailed or cut off; but in any case, a Term appointed is reached, so that the higher purpose of Allah's Will and Plan may be fulfilled in each given case, that man "may understand."

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ فَإِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ Huwa alla th ee yu h yee wayumeetu fai tha qa da amran fainnam a yaqoolu lahu kun fayakoon u
It is He who grants life and deals death; and when He wills a thing to be, He but says unto it, "Be" - and it is.

It is He Who gives you life and causes you to die. It is He Who when He decides to do something, needs only to say: "Be," and it is.

The keys of life and death are in Allah's hands. But He is not dependent on time or place or instruments or materials. All that He has to do is to say "Be", and it comes into existence. Conversely, His Will or Command is sufficient to annihilate Existence into Non-Existence (Life into Death) or determine the limits or conditions of Existence or Non-Existence.

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِىٓ ءَايَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ أَنَّىٰ يُصْرَفُونَ Alam tara il a alla th eena yuj a diloona fee a y a ti All a hi ann a yu s rafoon a
ART THOU NOT aware of how far they who call God's messages in question have lost sight of the truth?50

Lit., "how they are turned away" - i.e., from the truth: in this case, from all the observable evidence of God's almightiness and creative activity.

Do you not see how those who argue about the revelations of Allah turn away from the Right Way?

Have you not seen how those who dispute Allah's signs are turned away?

Hast thou not seen those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah, how they are turned away?

Those who dispute about the Signs of Allah which are clear to all who care to see, are merely in the mists of Unreality: Cf. x. 32.

ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَبِمَآ أَرْسَلْنَا بِهِۦ رُسُلَنَا ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ Alla th eena ka thth aboo bi a lkit a bi wabim a arsaln a bihi rusulan a fasawfa yaAAlamoon a
they who give the lie to this divine writ and [thus] to all [the messages] with which We sent forth Our apostles [of oldl?51 But in time they will come to know [how blind they have been: they will know it on Judgment Day],

Since, as the Qur'an so often points out, the fundamental truths set forth in all divine revelations are the same, a rejection of the last of them amounts to a rejection of all the preceding ones.

Those who have denied the Book and the Message which We have sent through Our Rasools shall soon come to know the truth when they will be cast into the fire of hell:

'They are' the ones who reject this Book and all 'scriptures' We sent Our messengers with. So they will know 'the consequences'

Those who deny the Scripture and that wherewith we send Our messengers. But they will come to know,

Those who reject the Book and the (revelations) with which We sent Our apostles: But soon shall they know 4447

"The Book" may refer to the Holy Qur-an or to the fundamental, Revelation the "Mother of the Book" (xiii. 39), while the Books revealed to the messengers are the definite Revelations that came down to men from time to time.
