70:21
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا Wai tha massahu alkhayru manooAA a n
and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others].

but when blessed with good fortune, he becomes stingy;

and withholding when touched with good-
  - Mustafa Khattab
And, when good befalleth him, grudging;

And niggardly when good reaches him 5689

In adversity he complains and gets into despair. In prosperity he becomes arrogant and forgets other people's rights and his own shortcomings. Cf. xli. 49-50.

70:22
إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ Ill a almu s alleen a
Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer,9

This, I believe, is the meaning of the expression al-musallin (lit., "the praying ones"), which evidently does not relate here to the mere ritual of prayer but, rather, as the next verse shows, to the attitude of mind and the spiritual need underlying it. In this sense it connects with the statement in verse {19} that "man is born with a restless disposition" which, when rightly used, leads him towards conscious spiritual growth, as well as to freedom from all self-pity and selfishness.

with the exception of those who offer the Salah (prayer),

Not so those devoted to Prayer 5690

The description of those devoted to Prayer is given in a number of clauses that follow, introduced by the words "Those who..." "Devoted to Prayer" is here but another aspect of what is described elsewhere as the Faithful and the Righteous. Devotion to prayer does not mean merely a certain number of formal rites or prostrations. It means a complete surrender of one's being to Allah. This means an earnest approach to and realisation of Allah's Presence ("steadfastness in Prayer"); acts of practical and real charity; and attempt to read this life in terms of the Hereafter; the seeking of the Peace of Allah and avoidance of His displeasure; chastity; probity true and firm witness; and guarding the prayer. (verse 34).

70:23
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ Alla th eena hum AAal a s al a tihim d a imoon a
[and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer;

remain steadfast in their Salah (prayer),

consistently performing their prayers;

Who are constant at their worship

70:24
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ Wa a lla th eena fee amw a lihim h aqqun maAAloom un
and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them],

set aside a due share in their wealth

and who give the rightful share of their wealth

And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged

70:25
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ Li l ss a ili wa a lma h room i
for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life];10

for the beggars and the deprived,

to the beggar and the poor;

See n. 5001 to li. 19. True charity consists in finding out those in real need, whether they ask or not. Most frequently those who ask are idle men who insolently wish to live upon others. But all cases of those who ask should be duly investigated, in case a little timely help may set the erring on the way. But the man with wealth or talent or opportunity has the further responsibility of searching out those in need of his assistance, in order to show that he holds all gifts in trust for the service of his fellow- creatures.

70:26
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ Wa a lla th eena yu s addiqoona biyawmi a l ddeen i
and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment;

accept the truth of the Day of Judgment,

and who 'firmly' believe in the Day of Judgment;

And those who believe in the Day of Judgment,

70:27
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ Wa a lla th eena hum min AAa tha bi rabbihim mushfiqoon a
and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement -

dread the punishment of their Rabb

and those who fear the punishment of their Lord-
  - Mustafa Khattab
And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom

And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord 5692

A true fear of Allah is the fear of offending against His holy Will and Law, and is therefore akin to the love of Allah. It proceeds from the realisation that all true peace and tranquillity comes from attuning our will to the universal Will and that sin causes discord, disharmony, and displeasure,-another name for the Wrath of Allah.

70:28
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ Inna AAa tha ba rabbihim ghayru mamoon in
for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure;11

This warning against pharisaic self-righteousness implies that however "good" a person may be, there is always a possibility of his or her having done a moral wrong (e.g., an injury to a fellow-being) and then conveniently "forgotten" this sin. Elliptically, this warning contains a call to increasing consciousness in all one's doings - for, "temptation to evil (fitnah) does not befall only those who are bent on denying the truth" 8:25 , but may also befall people who are otherwise righteous.

- for none is secure from the punishment of their Rabb -

'knowing that' none should feel secure from their Lord's punishment-
  - Mustafa Khattab
Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure

For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity 5693

I.e., that the punishment of sin may come suddenly at any time, when you least expect it.

70:29
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ Wa a lla th eena hum lifuroojihim ha fi th oon a
and who are mindful of their chastity,12

Lit., "who guard their private parts".

and guard their private parts,

and those who guard their chastity1

And those who preserve their chastity

70:30
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ Ill a AAal a azw a jihim aw m a malakat aym a nuhum fainnahum ghayru maloomeen a
[not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock] -:13 for then, behold, they are free of all blame,

See the identical passage in {23:5-7}, as well as the corresponding note [3], in which I have fully explained the reasons for my rendering of the phrase aw ma malakat aymanuhum as "that is those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]". As regards this interpretation, see also Razi's comments on 4:24 , as well as one of the alternative interpretations of that verse advanced by Tabari on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas and Mujahid.

except from their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for in their case they are not blameworthy.

70:31
فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ Famani ibtagh a war a a tha lika faol a ika humu alAA a doon a
whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors;

As for those who seek to go beyond this, they are transgressors.

but whoever seeks beyond that are the transgressors.

But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors;

70:32
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ Wa a lla th eena hum liam a n a tihim waAAahdihim r a AAoon a
and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges;

Those who keep their trusts and honor their promises,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
'The faithful are' also those who are true to their trusts and covenants;
  - Mustafa Khattab
And those who keep their pledges and their covenant.

And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 5695

For obligations of trusts and covenants, express or implied, see n. 682 to v. 1. They are just as sacred in ordinary everyday life as they are in special spiritual relationships. In addition, our life itself, and such reason and talents as we possess, as well as our wealth and possessions are trusts, of which we must fulfil the duties punctiliously.

70:33
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ Wa a lla th eena hum bishah a d a tihim q a imoon a
and who stand firm whenever they bear witness;

who stand firm in their testimonies

and who are honest in their testimony;
  - Mustafa Khattab
And those who stand by their testimony

And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 5696

If we know any truth of any kind, to that we must bear witness, as affecting the lives or interests of our fellow-beings,-firmly, not half-heartedly, without fear or favour, even if it causes loss or trouble to us, or if it loses us friends or associates.

70:34
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ Wa a lla th eena hum AAal a s al a tihim yu ha fi th oon a
and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent].

and strictly guard their Salah (prayers).

and who are 'properly' observant of their prayers.

And those who are attentive at their worship,

And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship 5697

70:35
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ Ol a ika fee jann a tin mukramoon a
These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured!

It is they who shall live with honor in paradise.

These will be in Gardens, held in honour.

These will dwell in Gardens, honored.
