Thus, [it will come to pass] when the stars are effaced,
  - Mohammad Asad
It is going to be fulfilled when the stars will lose their light,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
So when the stars are put out,
  - Mustafa Khattab
So when the stars are put out,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Then when the stars become dim; 5867
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The lustre of the stars will become dim; in fact they will disappear: cf. lxxxi. 2, and lxxxii. 2. The heaven's canopy will be torn asunder: cf. lxxxii. 1, and lxxiii. 18. The mountains will be uprooted and fly about like dust: cf. lxix. 14; lxxxi. 3; etc. All the old landmarks of the physical world as we know it will be swept away.

and when all the apostles are called together at a time appointed....5
  - Mohammad Asad

Sc., to bear witness for or against those to whom they conveyed God's message (cf. {4:41-42}, 5:109 , 7:6 or 39:69 ).

and when the Rasools will be brought together at the appointed time.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik

  - Mustafa Khattab
And when the messengers are brought unto their time appointed
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And when the apostles are (all) appointed a time (to collect) 5868
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Resurrection will be established. In the world which will then have passed away, inspired Prophets had been sent in succession at different times to all nations. Now they will be gathered together in one place before the Judgment-seat to bear witness as to the righteous or the evil ones within their respective spheres of work. Cf. xxxix. 69.

77:13
لِيَوْمِ ٱلْفَصْلِ Liyawmi alfa s l i
For the Day of Distinction [between the true and the false]!6
  - Mohammad Asad

This is chronologically the earliest occurrence of the expression yawm al-fasl, which invariably relates to the Day of Resurrection (cf. 37:21 , 44:40 , 78:17 , as well as verse {38} of the present surah): an allusion to the oft-repeated Qur'anic statement that on resurrection man will gain a perfect, unfailing insight into himself and the innermost motivation of his past attitudes and doings (cf. 69:1 and the corresponding note [1]).

For the Day of Judgement!
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
For the Day of 'Final' Decision!
  - Mustafa Khattab
For the Day of Decision.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
For the Day of Sorting out. 5869
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Cf. xxxvii. 21 and n. 4047; also xliv. 40, and n. 4718. That will be the Day of Judgment or Day of Decision. Good will then be completely separated from Evil. And the men who rejected Truth and flourished on Falsehood will find that in the world of Realities they will be absolutely nowhere. Hence the refrain of this Sura. "Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!" it sounds like a dirge on Sin.

  - Mohammad Asad
And what will explain to you, what the Day of Judgement is?
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
And what will make you realize what the Day of Decision is?
  - Mustafa Khattab
And what will convey unto thee what the Day of Decision is!
  - Marmaduke Pickthall

أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ Alam nuhliki alawwaleen a
Did We not destroy [so many of] those [sinners] of olden days?
  - Mohammad Asad
Did We not destroy the former generations for their evil deeds?
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Did We not destroy earlier disbelievers?
  - Mustafa Khattab
Destroyed We not the former folk,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Did We not destroy the men of old (for their evil)? 5870
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Allah's Law is always the same. Sin or corruption prepares its own destruction. It was so with the generation of Noah. In Arab tradition it was so with the 'Ad and the Thamud. In our own day we see relics of prehistoric civilisations, in Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and the Aegean: these were men of wonderful skill and resource, but they went under. If our generations, which pride themselves on their science and skill, desert Allah's Law, they will be certain to meet the same fate.

ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ Thumma nutbiAAuhumu al a khireen a
And We shall let them be followed by those of later times:7
  - Mohammad Asad

The use of the conjunction thumma - which in this case has been rendered as "And" - implies that suffering in the hereafter is bound to befall the sinners "of later times" (al-akhirun) even if God, in His unfathomable wisdom, wills to spare them in this world.

And We shall do the same to later generations who will follow them.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
And We will make the later disbelievers follow them.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Then caused the latter folk to follow after?
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
So shall We make later (generations) follow them.

  - Mohammad Asad
Thus do We deal with the guilty.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
This is how We deal with the wicked.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Thus deal We ever with the guilty.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Thus do We deal with men of sin.

Did We not create you out of a humble fluid,
  - Mohammad Asad
Have We not created you from an unworthy fluid,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Did We not create you from a humble fluid,
  - Mustafa Khattab
Did We not create you from a base fluid
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Have We not created you from a fluid (held) despicable? 5871
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Cf. xxxii. 8, n. 3638. Man is ashamed of the process of physical creation, by which he comes into being. Yet he is arrogant in life and neglectful of the Future.
