أَوْ تَقُولَ حِينَ تَرَى ٱلْعَذَابَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِى كَرَّةً فَأَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ
Aw taqoola h eena tar a alAAa tha ba law anna lee karratan faakoona mina almu h sineen a
or lest he should say, when he becomes aware of the suffering [that awaits him], "Would that I had a second chance [in life], so that I could be among the doers of good!"61
  - Mohammad Asad

Cf. 2:167 and 26:102 , as well as {6:27-28} and the corresponding note [19].

Or lest he should say upon seeing the punishment: `I wish I had another chance, I would certainly be among the righteous.'"
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Or say, upon seeing the torment, 'If only I had a second chance, I would have been one of the good-doers.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
Or should say, when it seeth the doom: Oh, that I had but a second chance that I might be among the righteous!
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
"Or (lest) it should say when it (actually) sees the Penalty: `If only I had another chance I should certainly be among those who do good!' 4329
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

In the third place, when we stand face to face with the Penalty of our own deeds, we might say, 'I wish I had another chance'. But not one, but many, chances are being given, especially when we are told (verse 53 above): 'Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful'. The force of 'lest it should say' here is the same as explained in the last note.
