Sahih Muslim Book - 16, Hadith - 3506

وَحَدَّثَنِى عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِى عَنْ صَالِحٍ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ إِنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ قَالَ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ النَّاسِ بِالْحِجَابِ لَقَدْ كَانَ أُبَىُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ يَسْأَلُنِى عَنْهُ. قَالَ أَنَسٌ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- عَرُوسًا بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ - قَالَ - وَكَانَ تَزَوَّجَهَا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَدَعَا النَّاسَ لِلطَّعَامِ بَعْدَ ارْتِفَاعِ النَّهَارِ فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- وَجَلَسَ مَعَهُ رِجَالٌ بَعْدَ مَا قَامَ الْقَوْمُ حَتَّى قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- فَمَشَى فَمَشَيْتُ مَعَهُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ بَابَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ ثُمَّ ظَنَّ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ فَإِذَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ مَكَانَهُمْ فَرَجَعَ فَرَجَعْتُ الثَّانِيَةَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ حُجْرَةَ عَائِشَةَ فَرَجَعَ فَرَجَعْتُ فَإِذَا هُمْ قَدْ قَامُوا فَضَرَبَ بَيْنِى وَبَيْنَهُ بِالسِّتْرِ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ آيَةَ الْحِجَابِ.

Anas bin Malik said: "I am the most knowledgeable of the people concerning Hijab. Ubayy bin Ka'b used to ask me about it." Anas said: "The day after the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) married Zainab bint Jahsh, whom he married in Al-Madinah, he invited the people to come and eat in the mid-morning. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) sat and some men sat with him after the people had left. Then the Messenger of Allah ~ got up and walked, and I walked with him, until he reached the door of 'Aishah's apartment. Then he thought that they had left, so he went back, and I went back with him, and they were still sitting there. Then he went back to 'Aishah's door a second time, and I went with him, then he went back and I went back, and they had left. Then he drew the curtain between myself and himself, and the verse of Hijab was revealed."
