Sahih Muslim Book - 39, Hadith - 5819

حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيُّ ، وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، قَالَ حَسَنٌ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ ، وَقَالَ عَبْدٌ : حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنْ صَالِحٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ ، أَنَّهُمْ بَيْنَمَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ لَيْلَةً مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رُمِيَ بِنَجْمٍ فَاسْتَنَارَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَاذَا كُنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، إِذَا رُمِيَ بِمِثْلِ هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، كُنَّا نَقُولُ وُلِدَ اللَّيْلَةَ رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ ، وَمَاتَ رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : فَإِنَّهَا لاَ يُرْمَى بِهَا لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ ، وَلَكِنْ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى اسْمُهُ ، إِذَا قَضَى أَمْرًا سَبَّحَ حَمَلَةُ الْعَرْشِ ، ثُمَّ سَبَّحَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ ، حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ التَّسْبِيحُ أَهْلَ هَذِهِ السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : الَّذِينَ يَلُونَ حَمَلَةَ الْعَرْشِ لِحَمَلَةِ الْعَرْشِ : مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ ؟ فَيُخْبِرُونَهُمْ مَاذَا قَالَ : قَالَ فَيَسْتَخْبِرُ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ السَّمَاوَاتِ بَعْضًا ، حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْخَبَرُ هَذِهِ السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا ، فَتَخْطَفُ الْجِنُّ السَّمْعَ فَيَقْذِفُونَ إِلَى أَوْلِيَائِهِمْ ، وَيُرْمَوْنَ بِهِ ، فَمَا جَاؤُوا بِهِ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَهُوَ حَقٌّ ، وَلَكِنَّهُمْ يَقْرِفُونَ فِيهِ وَيَزِيدُونَ.

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas said: “One of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), an Ansari man, told me that while they were sitting one night with the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), a shooting star shone brightly. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said to them: ‘What did you used to say during the Jahiliyyah if you saw a shooting star?’ They said: ‘Allah and His Messenger know best. We used to say that a great man has been born this night, or that a great man has died.’ The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: ‘It does not appear for the death or life of anyone, but when our Lord, Exalted and Blessed is His Name, decrees some matter, the bearers of the Throne glorify Him, then the inhabitants of heaven who are closest to them glorify Him, until the Tasbih (statements of glorification) reach the people of the lowest heaven, Then those who are nearest to the bearers of the Throne say: “What did your Lord say?” And they tell them what He said. And the inhabitants of heaven ask one another for the news, until the news reaches the lowest heaven. Then the eavesdropping Jinn snatch what they can and they convey it to their friend (the soothsayers). What they narrated as they heard it is true, but they add lies to it.”’
