Sahih Muslim Book - 43, Hadith - 6149

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، عَنْ هَمَّامِ بْنِ مُنَبِّهٍ ، قَالَ : هَذَا مَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَ أَحَادِيثَ مِنْهَا ، وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : جَاءَ مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ إِلَى مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ . فَقَالَ لَهُ : أَجِبْ رَبَّكَ قَالَ فَلَطَمَ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ عَيْنَ مَلَكِ الْمَوْتِ فَفَقَأَهَا ، قَالَ فَرَجَعَ الْمَلَكُ إِلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى فَقَالَ : إِنَّكَ أَرْسَلْتَنِي إِلَى عَبْدٍ لَكَ لاَ يُرِيدُ الْمَوْتَ ، وَقَدْ فَقَأَ عَيْنِي ، قَالَ فَرَدَّ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ عَيْنَهُ وَقَالَ : ارْجِعْ إِلَى عَبْدِي فَقُلْ : الْحَيَاةَ تُرِيدُ ؟ فَإِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ الْحَيَاةَ فَضَعْ يَدَكَ عَلَى مَتْنِ ثَوْرٍ ، فَمَا تَوَارَتْ يَدُكَ مِنْ شَعْرَةٍ ، فَإِنَّكَ تَعِيشُ بِهَا سَنَةً ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ مَهْ ؟ قَالَ : ثُمَّ تَمُوتُ ، قَالَ : فَالآنَ مِنْ قَرِيبٍ ، رَبِّ أَمِتْنِي مِنَ الأَرْضِ الْمُقَدَّسَةِ ، رَمْيَةً بِحَجَرٍ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : وَاللَّهِ لَوْ أَنِّي عِنْدَهُ لأَرَيْتُكُمْ قَبْرَهُ إِلَى جَانِبِ الطَّرِيقِ ، عِنْدَ الْكَثِيبِ الأَحْمَرِ.

It was narrated that Hammam bin Munabbih said: “This is what Abu Hurairah narrated to us from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w).” He narrated a number Ahadith, including the following: “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: “The Angel of Dead came to Musa and said: “Answer the call of your Lord.” Musa, slapped the eye of the Angel of Death and put it out. The Angel went back to Allah, Exalted is He, and said: “You have sent me to a slave of Yours who does not want to die, and he has put out my eye.” Allah restored his eye and said: “Go back to My slave and say: ‘Do you want to live? If you want to live, put your hand to the back of an ox and however many hairs your hand covers, you will have one year for every year.”’ He said: “Then what?” He said: “Then you will die.” He (Musa) said: “Rather let it be now. O Lord, cause me to die a stone’s throw from the holy land.”’ The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: ‘By Allah, if I were there I would show you his grave, beside the road, beneath the red mound.”’
