Sunnah Prayers — Complete Guide

Sunnah prayers strengthen faith and complete the obligatory prayers. They were practiced consistently by the Prophet ﷺ and bring immense reward and spiritual upliftment.

Daily Sunnah Prayers (Sunnah Rawatib)

These are the emphasized Sunnah prayers connected to the five daily prayers:

  • 2 before Fajr
  • 4 before Dhuhr, 2 after Dhuhr
  • 2 after Maghrib
  • 2 after Isha

These Sunnah prayers protect a person’s faith and elevate their rank in the Hereafter.

Night Sunnah Prayers

Tahajjud

  • Offered after sleeping, during the last third of the night
  • Known as the most rewarding voluntary prayer
  • A time when duas are accepted

Witr

  • Prayed after Isha and before Fajr
  • Can be offered as 1, 3, 5, 7, or more (but always an odd number)
  • Considered the “final prayer of the night”

Duha Prayer (Forenoon Prayer)

  • Time: After sunrise until before midday
  • Brings barakah (blessing) in livelihood
  • Can be prayed as 2, 4, 6, or 8 rak’ahs
  • A beloved Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

Additional Sunnah Practices Related to Prayer

Enhance your prayer life with these Sunnah actions practiced by the Prophet ﷺ:
