they know but the outer surface of this world's life, whereas of the ultimate thinas they are utterly unaware.4
  - Mohammad Asad

The term al-akhirah circumscribes, in this context. both the inner reality of this world's life and the ultimate reality of the hereafter.

They only know the outward show of this world's life, but they are heedless about the life to come.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
They 'only' know the worldly affairs of this life, but are 'totally' oblivious to the Hereafter.
  - Mustafa Khattab
They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
They know but the outer (things) in the life of this world: but of the End of things they are heedless. 3511 3512
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Men are misled by the outward show of things, though the inner reality may be quite different. Many seeming disasters are really godsends if we only understood.

AKhirat: may refer to the End of things or enterprises in history as well as the Hereafter in the technical theological sense.
