ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ
Thumma th ahaba il a ahlihi yatama tta
and then went arrogantly back to what he had come from.14
  - Mohammad Asad

Lit., "to his people": i.e., to the arrogant belief, rooted in the materialism of his social environments that man is "self-sufficient" and, therefore, not in need of any divine guidance (cf. 96:6 ).

Then he went to his kinfolk elated with pride.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
then went to their own people, walking boastfully.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Then went he to his folk with glee.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Then did he stalk to his family in full conceit! 5827
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Conceit or arrogance is the root-cause of most Evil. By that cause fell Iblis: see ii. 34.
