ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ Thumma aghraqn a al a khareen a
and then We caused the others to drown.35
  - Mohammad Asad

From various indications in the Bible (in particular, Exodus xiv, 2 and 9), it appears that the miracle of the crossing of the Red Sea took place at the north-western extremity of what is known today as the Gulf of Suez. In those ancient times it was not as deep as it is now, and in some respects may have resembled the shallow part of the North Sea between the mainland and the Frisian Islands, with its total ebbs which lay bare the sandbanks and make them temporarily passable, followed by sudden, violent tides which submerge them entirely.

and drowned the others.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Then We drowned the others.
  - Mustafa Khattab
We drowned the others.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
But We drowned the others.

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ Inna fee tha lika la a yatan wam a k a na aktharuhum mumineen a
In this [story], behold, there is a message [unto all men], even though most of them will not believe [in it].
  - Mohammad Asad
Surely there is a lesson in this: yet most of these people do not learn this lesson to become believers.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Surely in this is a sign. Yet most of them would not believe.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 3173
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

As it was then, so it is now. In spite of the obvious Signs of Allah, people who are blind in their obstinate resistance to Truth accomplish their own destruction, while humble, persecuted men of Faith are transformed by the Light of Allah, and obtain salvation.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ Wainna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu a l rra h eem u
And yet, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace!36
  - Mohammad Asad

See note [6] on verses {8-9}.

The fact is that your Rabb is the Mighty as well as the Merciful.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
And your Lord is certainly the Almighty, Most Merciful.
  - Mustafa Khattab
And lo, thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And verily thy Lord is He the Exalted in Might Most Merciful. 3174
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Nothing that the powers of evil can do, will ever defeat the merciful Purpose of Allah. Evil, in resisting good, will effect its own destruction.

وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ Wa o tlu AAalayhim nabaa ibr a heem a
AND CONVEY unto them37 the story of Abraham
  - Mohammad Asad

I.e., to the kind of people spoken of in verses {3-8} of this surah.

Narrate to them the story of Ibrahim,
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Relate to them 'O Prophet' the story of Abraham,
  - Mustafa Khattab
Recite unto them the story of Abraham:
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And rehearse to them (something of) Abraham's story. 3175
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

For the argument of this Sura the incidents in Abraham's life are not relevant and are not mentioned. What is mentioned is: (1) the steps by which he taught about the sin of false worship, in the form of a Dialogue; (2) the aims of a righteous man not only in his individual life, but for his ancestors and posterity, in the form of a Prayer; and (3) a picture of the Future Judgment, in the form of a vision. (1) is covered by verses 70-82; (2) by 83-87; and (3) by 88-102.

  - Mohammad Asad
when he asked his father and his people: "What is that which you worship?"
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
when he questioned his father and his people, 'What is that you worship 'besides Allah'?'
  - Mustafa Khattab
When he said unto his father and his folk: What worship ye?
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Behold he said to his father and his people: "What worship ye?"

They answered: "We worship idols, and we remain ever devoted to them."
  - Mohammad Asad
They replied: "We worship idols, and sit beside them with all devotion."
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
They replied, 'We worship idols, to which we are fully devoted.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
They said: We worship idols, and are ever devoted unto them.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
They said: "We worship idols and we remain constantly in attendance on them." 3176
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

They want to show their true and assiduous devotion. But Abraham goes at once to the heart of the matter by asking: "To whom is your devotion paid? Is the object worthy of it?"

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ وَجَدْنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ Q a loo bal wajadn a a b a an a ka tha lika yafAAaloon a
They exclaimed: "But we found our fore-fathers doing the same!"38
  - Mohammad Asad

The particle bal at the beginning of the sentence expresses astonishment. Thus, evading a direct answer to Abraham's criticism of idol-worship, his people merely stress its antiquity, forgetting - as Zamakhshari points out - that "ancient usage and precedence in time are no proof of [a concept's] soundness". Razi, for his part, states that the above verse represents "one of the strongest [Qur'anic] indications of the immorality (fasad) inherent in [the principle of] taqlid'', i.e., the blind, unquestioning adoption of religious concepts or practices on the basis of one's uncritical faith in no more than the "authority" of a scholar or religious leader.

They replied: "No! But we found our forefathers doing so."
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
They replied, 'No! But we found our forefathers doing the same.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this use.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
They said: "Nay but we found our fathers doing thus (what we do)."

"For they are enemies to me; not so the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds; 3177
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The things that you worship are enemies to mankind: let me testify from my own personal experience: they are enemies to me: they can do me no good, but would lead me astray. Contrast with their impotence or their power of mischief the One True God Whom I worship: He created me and all the Worlds: He cherishes me and guides me; He takes care of me; and when I die, He will give me new life; He will forgive me and grant me final Salvation. Will you then come to this true worship? How can you doubt, after seeing the contrast of the one with the other? Is it not as the contrast between Light and Darkness?'
