51:41
وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَ Wafee AA a din i th arsaln a AAalayhimu a l rree h a alAAaqeem a
And [you have the same message] in [what happened to the tribe of] 'Ad, when We let loose against them that life-destroying wind

There is also a sign in the story of 'Ad: when We let loose on them a blighting wind

And in 'the story of' 'Âd 'was another lesson,' when We sent against them the devastating wind.1

 lit., ‘a barren wind,’ since the wind was not productive—it did not carry rain or fertilize trees.

And in (the tribe of) Aad (there is a portent) when We sent the fatal wind against them.

And in the `Ad (people) (was another Sign): Behold We sent against them the devastating Wind: 5018

Cf. xlvi. 21-26. The point here is that the 'Ad were a gifted people: Allah had given them talents and material wealth: but when they defied Allah, they and all their belongings were destroyed in a night, by a hurricane which they thought was bringing them the rain to which they were looking forward. How marvellously Allah's Providence works, to help the good and destroy the wicked!

51:42
مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِ M a ta th aru min shayin atat AAalayhi ill a jaAAalathu ka al rrameem i
which spared nothing of what it came upon, but caused [all of] it to become like bones dead and decayed.28

which made rotten everything that it blew on.

51:43
وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ Wafee thamooda i th qeela lahum tamattaAAoo h att a h een in
And in [the story of the tribe of] Thamud, too, when they were told, "You shall enjoy your life for [but] a little while,"29

Likewise the story of Thamud, when it was said to them: "Enjoy yourselves for a while,"

And in 'the story of' Thamûd 'was another lesson,' when they were told, 'Enjoy yourselves 'only' for a 'short' while.'1

And in (the tribe of) Thamud (there is a portent) when it was told them: Take your ease awhile.

See the story of the Thamud and their prophet Salih in vii. 73-79. Here the point is the suddenness of their punishment and its unexpected nature.

Salih their prophet gave them three days' clear warning for repentance (xi. 65). But they heeded him not. On the contrary they flouted him and continued in their evil courses.

51:44
فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَ FaAAataw AAan amri rabbihim faakha th athumu a l ssa AAiqatu wahum yan th uroon a
after they had turned with disdain from their Sustainer's commandment - whereupon the thunderbolt of punishment overtook them while they were [helplessly] looking on:

but they disobeyed the commandment of their Rabb; consequently they were overtaken by the thunderbolt even while they were looking on.

Still they persisted in defying the commands of their Lord, so they were overtaken by a 'mighty' blast while they were looking on.

But they rebelled against their Lord's decree, and so the thunderbolt overtook them even while they gazed;

But they insolently defied the command of their Lord: so the stunning noise (of an earthquake) seized them even while they were looking on. 5021 5022

They had already defied the order to preserve the She-camel, which was a sign from Allah. See xi. 64-65 and n. 1560. They continued to flout the warnings of the prophet until the earthquake came on them with a stunning noise and buried them where they were: vii. 78; and xi. 67.

Sa'iqat: a stunning sound like that of thunder and lightning (ii. 55); such a sound often accompanies an earthquake (see xli. 17, n. 4485, and vii. 78 and n. 1047).

51:45
فَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَ Fam a ista ta AAoo min qiy a min wam a k a noo munta s ireen a
or they were unable even to rise, and could not defend themselves.

So neither they could stand up on their feet nor could they defend themselves.

Then they were not able to rise up, nor were they helped.

And they were unable to rise up, nor could they help themselves.

51:46
وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَ Waqawma noo h in min qablu innahum k a noo qawman f a siqeen a
And [thus, too, We destroyed] Noah's people aforetime: for they were iniquitous folk.

And We destroyed the people of Nuh (Noah) before them because they too were transgressors.

And the people of Noah 'had also been destroyed' earlier. They were truly a rebellious people.

And the folk of Noah aforetime. Lo! they were licentious folk.

So were the people of Noah before them: for they wickedly transgressed. 5024

The generation of Noah was swept away in the Flood for their sins: vii. 59-64. The point is that such a Flood seemed so unlikely to them that they thought Noah was "wandering in his mind" when he delivered Allah's Message: vii. 60.

51:47
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ Wa al ssam a a banayn a h a biaydin wainn a lamoosiAAoon a
AND IT IS We who have built the universe30 with [Our creative] power; and, verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.31

Lit., "the sky" or "the heaven", which in the Qur'an often has the connotation of "universe" or, in the plural ("the heavens"), of "cosmic systems".

See note [38] on the first part of 21:30 . The phrase inna la-musi'un clearly foreshadows the modern notion of the "expanding universe" - that is, the fact that the cosmos, though finite in extent, is continuously expanding in space.

We have built the heavens with Our hands, for We have the power to do so.

We built the universe with 'great' might, and We are certainly expanding 'it'.

We have built the heaven with might, and We it is who make the vast extent (thereof).

With the power and skill did We construct the Firmament: for it is We Who create the vastness of Space. 5025

If you do not wish to go back to the wonderful things in the past, which show the power and goodness of Allah, and His justice supreme over all wrong-doing, look at the wonderful things unfolding themselves before your very eyes! (1) The space in the heavens above! Who can comprehend it but He Who made it and sustains it? (2) The globe of the earth under your feet! How great its expanse seems over sea and land, and spread out for you like a wonderful carpet or bed of rest! (3) All things are in twos: sex in plants and animals, by which one individual is complementary to another; in the subtle forces of nature, Day and Night, positive and negative electricity, forces of attraction and repulsion: and numerous other opposites, each fulfilling its purpose, and contribution to the working of Allah's Universe: and in the moral and spiritual world, Love and Aversion, Mercy and Justice, Striving and Rest, and so on;-all fulfilling their functions according to the Artistry and wonderful Purpose of Allah. Everything has its counterpart, or pair, or complement. Allah alone is One, with none like Him, or needed to complement Him. These are noble things to contemplate. And they lead us to a true understanding of Allah's Purpose and Message.

51:48
وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَـٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَـٰهِدُونَ Wa a lar d a farashn a h a faniAAma alm a hidoon a
And the earth have We spread out wide and how well have We ordered it!32

I.e., in accordance with the requirements of the living organisms that were to - and did - develop on it.

We have spread out the earth; how excellent a spreader We are!

As for the earth, We spread it out. How superbly did We smooth it out!1

 The globe was spread out to accommodate Allah’s creation. The spherical shape of the earth is expressed in 39:5.

And the earth have We laid out, how gracious was the Spreader (thereof)!

And We have spread out the (spacious) earth: how excellently We do spread out!

51:49
وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ Wamin kulli shayin khalaqn a zawjayni laAAallakum ta th akkaroon a
And in everything have We created opposite,33 so that you might bear in mind [God alone is one].34

Lit., "of every thing have We created pairs" - a phrase which is explained in note [18] on 36:36 .

We have created everything in pairs, so that you may learn a lesson from it.

And We created pairs of all things1 so perhaps you would be mindful.

 For example, male and female, sweet and bitter, day and night, plains and mountains, heat and cold, light and darkness.

And all things We have created by pairs, that haply ye may reflect.

And of everything We have created pairs: that ye may receive instruction. 5026

51:50
فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ Fafirroo il a All a hi innee lakum minhu na th eerun mubeen un
And so, [O Muhammad, say unto them:] "Flee unto God [from all that is false and evil]! Verily, I am a plain warner to you from Him!

O Prophet, say to mankind: "Rush towards Allah, surely I am assigned by Him as a plain Warner to you all.

So 'proclaim, O Prophet': 'Flee to Allah! I am truly sent by Him with a clear warning to you.

Therefor flee unto Allah; lo! I am a plain warner unto you from Him

Hasten ye then (at once) to Allah: I am from Him a warner to you clear and open! 5027

If you understand Nature and yourselves aright, you will know that Allah is the Truth, and you will fly at once to Him. This is the teaching which the Prophet of Allah has come to give you, in clear terms and openly to all.

51:51
وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ Wal a tajAAaloo maAAa All a hi il a han a khara innee lakum minhu na th eerun mubeen un
And do not ascribe divinity to aught35 side by side with God: verily, I am a plain warner to you from Him!"

Lit., "do not set up any other deity".

Do not set up another god besides Allah, surely I am assigned by Him as a plain Warner to you all."

And do not set up another god with Allah. I am truly sent by Him with a clear warning to you.'

And set not any other god along with Allah; lo! I am a plain warner unto you from Him.

And make not another an object of worship with Allah: I am from Him a Warner to you clear and open! 5028

Verses 50 and 51, ending with the same clause to emphasize the connection between the two, should be read together. The Prophet's mission was (and is): (1) to show us the urgent need for repentance; and (2) to wean us from the precipice of false worship. The one convinces us of sin and opens the door to the Mercy of Allah; the other cures us of the madness of paying court to idle or worthless objects of desire; for in the worship of Allah, the One True God is included the best service to ourselves and our fellow-creatures. If fully understood, this sums up the whole duty of man: for it leads us by the right Path to the love of Allah and the love of man and of all creatures.

51:52
كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌ Ka tha lika m a at a alla th eena min qablihim min rasoolin ill a q a loo s ah irun aw majnoon un
[But] thus it is: never yet came any apostle to those who lived before their time but they said, "A spellbinder36 [is he], or a madman!"

Lit., "sorcerer".

It has been the case that whenever a Rasool came to the peoples before them, they said about him: "He is a sorcerer or a madman."

Similarly, no messenger came to those before them without being told: 'A magician or a madman!'

Even so there came no messenger unto those before them but they said: A wizard or a madman!

Similarly no apostle came to the Peoples before them but they said (of him) in like manner "A sorcerer or one possessed"! 5029

They said this of Moses: li. 39. And they said this of the holy Prophet: xxxviii. 4; xliv. 14.

51:53
أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ Ataw as aw bihi bal hum qawmun ta ghoon a
Have they, perchance, handed down this [way of thinking] as a legacy unto one another? Nay, they are people filled with overweening arrogance!

Have they transmitted this statement from one generation to the next? Nay, but they are all a rebellious people.

Have they passed this 'cliché' down to one another? In fact, they have 'all' been a transgressing people.

Have they handed down (the saying) as an heirloom one unto another? Nay, but they are froward folk.

Is this the legacy they have transmitted one to another? Nay they are themselves a people transgressing beyond bounds! 5030

There is a tradition of Evil as there is a tradition of Good. The ways of Evil in dealing with the teachers of Truth are similar in all ages. But such evil traditions would have no effect, were it not that the generation following them is itself ungodly, "transgressing beyond bounds."

51:54
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍ Fatawalla AAanhum fam a anta bimaloom in
Turn, then, away from them, and thou shalt incur no blame;

So, O Prophet, ignore them; you are not at fault.

So 'now' turn away from them 'O Prophet', for you will not be blamed.1

 Since you have already delivered the message clearly.

So withdraw from them (O Muhammad), for thou art in no wise blameworthy,

So turn away from them: not thine is the blame. 5031

When the Prophet freely proclaims his Message, it is not his fault if obstinate wickedness refuses to listen. He can leave them alone, but he should continue to teach for the benefit of those who have Faith.

51:55
وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ Wa th akkir fainna a l thth ikr a tanfaAAu almumineen a
yet go on reminding [all who would listen]: for, verily, such a reminder will profit the believers.

But keep on admonishing them, for admonition is beneficial to the true believers.

But 'continue to' remind. For certainly reminders benefit the believers.

And warn, for warning profiteth believers.

But teach (thy Message): for teaching benefits the Believers.
