Sahih Muslim Book - 12, Hadith - 2470

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِى شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِىِّ عَنْ يُسَيْرِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ سَأَلْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ حُنَيْفٍ هَلْ سَمِعْتَ النَّبِىَّ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- يَذْكُرُ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ - وَأَشَارَ بِيَدِهِ نَحْوَ الْمَشْرِقِ « قَوْمٌ يَقْرَءُونَ الْقُرْآنَ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ لاَ يَعْدُو تَرَاقِيَهُمْ يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ ».

It was narrated that Yusair bin Amr said: ‘I asked Sahl bin Hunaif: ‘Did you hear the Prophet (SAW) mention the Khawarij?’ He said: ‘I heard him’- and he gestured towards the east – (say:) ‘People who recite the Quran on their lips, but it will not go any further than their collarbones. They will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes out of the prey.’’
