It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed that Abu Musa went to 'Umar's door and asked for permission to enter. 'Umar said: "One." He asked permission a second time and 'Umar said: "Two." He asked permission a third time, and 'Umar said: "Three." Then he went away. 'Umar sent someone after him to bring him back. He ('Umar) said: "If this is something that you learned from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), all well and good, otherwise I will make an example of you." Abu Sa'eed said: "He came to us and said: 'Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: "Permission is to be sought three times?"' They started laughing and I said: 'Your Muslim brother comes to you upset and you laugh? Let's go, and I will be your partner in this trouble.' He said: 'This is Abu Sa'eed."'
