بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً Bal yureedu kullu imriin minhum an yut a s u h ufan munashshara tan
Yea, every one of them claims that he [himself] ought to have been given revelations unfolded!29
  - Mohammad Asad

Lit., "every one of them wants to be given wide-open scriptures", or "scriptures unfolded" (i.e., open to everyone's understanding): cf. 2:118 - "Why does not God speak unto us, nor is a message conveyed to us?" - i.e., directly, without the intervention of a prophet. The above is the earliest illustration of the "arrogance" or "false pride" to which the Qur'an so often refers.

Nay, each of them wants a scripture of his own to be unrolled before them.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
In fact, each one of them wishes to be given a 'personal' letter 'from Allah' for all 'to read'.1
  - Mustafa Khattab

Another possible translation: “In fact, each of them wishes to be given a scripture open ˹for all to read˺.” See 6:124.

Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Forsooth each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out! 5806
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Cf. xvii. 93: "Until thou send down to us a book, that we could read." The Unbelievers pretend in ridicule that they would believe if a special message written on open scrolls and addressed to them severally were brought to them by a miracle! There is a disease in their hearts and understandings. The Teacher's warning is plain, and enough for any reasonable man who has the will to seek Allah.

Nay, but they do not [believe in and, hence, do not] fear the life to come.
  - Mohammad Asad
But no! The fact is that they do not fear the Hereafter.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
But no! In fact, they do not fear the Hereafter.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter.

Nay, verily, this is an admonition -
  - Mohammad Asad
But no! Surely this Qur'an is an admonition.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Enough! Surely this 'Quran' is a reminder.
  - Mustafa Khattab
Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Nay this surely is an admonition:

and whoever wills may take it to heart.
  - Mohammad Asad
Let him who wills take heed.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
So let whoever wills be mindful of it.
  - Mustafa Khattab
So whosoever will may heed.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Let any who will keep it in remembrance! 5807
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The Qur-an itself is the admonition-the latest among the revealed Books of Allah. If man has the will to learn, he will keep the Message always before Him, and Allah's grace will help him to carry it out in his conduct.

Wam a ya th kuroona ill a an yash a a All a hu huwa ahlu a l ttaqw a waahlu almaghfirat i
But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills:30 [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness.
  - Mohammad Asad

Namely, unless He bestows His grace on them by making their minds and hearts receptive to the truth, so that they are compelled - from within themselves, as it were - to make the right choice. (See also note [11] on {81:28-29}, as well as note [4] on 14:4 .)

But none takes heed except by the will of Allah. He Alone is worthy to be feared and He Alone is worthy to forgive those who fear Him.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
But they cannot do so unless Allah wills. He 'alone' is worthy to be feared and entitled to forgive.
  - Mustafa Khattab
And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness and the Lord of Forgiveness. 5808
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Righteousness as well as Forgiveness have their source in Allah's Will. Man's Righteousness has no meaning except in relation to the universal Will. For Taqwa see n. 26 to ii. 2. If we take the word here in the sense of "the fear of Allah", the translation would be: "He alone is worthy to be feared, and He alone is entitled to grant Forgiveness."
