هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ ٱلْفَصْلِ ۖ جَمَعْنَـٰكُمْ وَٱلْأَوَّلِينَ H atha yawmu alfa s li jamaAAn a kum wa a lawwaleen a
that Day of Distinction [between the true and the false, when they will be told]: "We have brought you together with those [sinners] of olden times;
  - Mohammad Asad
Such will be the Day of Judgement. We shall assemble you and your past generations.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
'They will be told by Allah,' 'This is the Day of 'Final' Decision: We have gathered you along with earlier disbelievers 'for punishment'.
  - Mustafa Khattab
This is the Day of Decision, We have brought you and the men of old together.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
That will be a Day of Sorting out! We shall Gather you together and those before (you)! 5881
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

We may suppose this as spoken primarily to the Quraish who were plotting against the Prophet. You may use all your wisdom and that of your ancestors, but you will not be able to defeat Allah or His Plan. See next verse.

  - Mohammad Asad
Now if you have a plot, use it against Me.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
So if you have a scheme 'to save yourselves', then use it against Me.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
If now ye have any wit, outwit Me.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Now if ye have a trick (or plot) use it against Me! 5882
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The plots against the holy Prophet were plots against Allah's Truth, and therefore against Allah. Can any one hope to profit by such plots? Can any one defeat Allah's Plan and Purpose? Let them try. They will only ruin themselves, as the Pagan leaders did. There can only be pity for such men. What will be their state in the Hereafter? "Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Allah's Truth!"

[AS AGAINST this,] behold, the God-conscious shall dwell amidst [cooling] shades and springs,
  - Mohammad Asad
Surely the righteous shall dwell amidst cool shades and springs
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
Indeed, the righteous will be amid 'cool' shade and springs
  - Mustafa Khattab
Lo! those who kept their duty are amid shade and fountains,
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
As to the Righteous they shall be amidst (cool) shades and springs (of water). 5883
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

This is in contrast to the triple shade of smoke and sin for the sinners, which neither gives them coolness nor protects them from the Blazing Fire. The Shade, i.e. Covering, of Allah's Good Pleasure, will be the greatest Boon of all, and the Spring of Allah's Love will be inexhaustible.

[and they will be told:] "Eat and drink in good cheer in return for what you did [in life]!"13
  - Mohammad Asad

For this symbolism of the joys of paradise, see Appendix I.

We shall say to them: "Eat and drink to your heart's content, this is the reward for your good deeds."
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
'They will be told,' 'Eat and drink happily for what you used to do.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
(Unto them it is said:) Eat, drink and welcome, O ye blessed, in return for what ye did.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
"Eat ye and drink ye to your heart's content: for that ye worked (Righteousness)." 5885
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

The fruits of righteousness are contentment in this life and the supreme Bliss in the next.

EAT [your fill] and enjoy your life for a little while, O you who are lost in sin!14
  - Mohammad Asad

Lit., "behold, you are lost in sin (mujrimun)".

O culprits! Eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while. Surely you are culprits.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
'Eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while, 'for' you are truly wicked.'
  - Mustafa Khattab
Eat and take your ease (on earth) a little. Lo! ye are guilty.
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
(O ye Unjust!) Eat ye and enjoy yourselves (but) a little while for that ye are Sinners. 5886
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"Eat" is symbolical of having the good things of life in this world. It may be that they are only given for a trial. Because their minds and wishes run to wrong things, the opportunities for wrong are multiplied, as the impetus for good or for evil increases progressively. They are asked to believe and repent. But if they do not, they are to be pitied, even for the good things of this life, for they will come to an evil End in the Hereafter.

and when they are told, "Bow down [before God]", do not bow down:
  - Mohammad Asad
When they are asked to bow down before Allah, they do not bow down.
  - Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik
When it is said to them, 'Bow down 'before Allah,' they do not bow.
  - Mustafa Khattab
When it is said unto them: Bow down, they bow not down!
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
And when it is said to them "Prostrate yourselves!" They do not so. 5887
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Prostration is a symbol of humility and a desire to get nearer to Allah by Prayer and a good life. Those who refuse to adopt this Path are to be pitied: how will they fare at Judgment?

In what statement after this Qur'an, will they believe?

  - Mustafa Khattab
In what statement, after this, will they believe?
  - Marmaduke Pickthall
Then what Message after that will they believe in? 5888
  - Abdullah Yusuf Ali

"That" may refer to verse 48: they were given plain and clear Guidance, and they refused to accept it: after that what kind of Message will they accept? The Guidance referred to is obviously that of Islam or the Qur-an.
